crosses fingers that mine is dead silent

When I first got it, it was truly silent then a few days later, I got the same noise everyone is getting, then I played with the audio jack cause I thought it's affected by it. Then now it's truly silent, even under load.

Though I do have this problem, in Windows 8, when I connect my headphone, the OS doesn't switch the audio to my headphone, I need to manually disable the soundcard for it to pass the audio to my headphone. When I unplug the headphone, I'll have to reactivate back the soundcard or else they wont be any sound. Anyone else has similar problem?

Is anyone that hears it over 35 or 40? I suspect that it's really out of range for most, and easily drowned out.

Was the whine coming from inside the machine or external speakers? I can't imagine the headphone jack has anything to do with the coils that are whining inside the computer.

Mine sits right next to me on my desk. I've had it since December. It makes absolutely no sound. Even when it's processing a big batch of video conversions and the fan is running the only way I know it is doing so is that the air coming out of the top is a bit warm. No sound at all. No whine, no nothing!

Just got mine today, Hex, D700.

Because of this thread I tried to hear any noise from the machine and nothing, its dead silent. I put my ear about one inch from the top and listened for a minute and I heard a tiny little scratch/jitter sound that lasted about half a second then it went silent again. I can not hear anything from 2 feet away though.

He is saying he is certain all nMP have the noise, but not everyone can hear it.

So for example if he listens to every nMP, he will hear it, but maybe you will not.

But he has to listen to *every* nMP to be certain. It's just an absurd statement, that's all.

And for the record, I have excellent hearing and often hear things others don't. And my nMP has no "coil whine" or whatever it's being called. He is welcome to come over to my house and test his "certainty".

Mine is silent even when gaming under windows. I think I heard the fans spin up during the firmware update but other than that nothing.

My external Thunderbolt drive is the only thing I hear during my daily usage.

I stated in a later post:

"Ok I will take back what I said about all having it but I will say this: After reading about this issue and peoples' replacements doing the same, I was 100% sure mine would have it before I got it and it does. I am certain that some people can't hear it such as my roommate. Maybe its one of those "once heard cannot be unheard"

I am also 100% convinced if I elect to have a replacement sent right now it will do the same. So rather then bump people back in line that are still waiting I will report the issue to Apple and wait until people get replacements where this is resolved."

I'm extremely noise sensitive. Years ago I used to obsess about EndPCNoise.com and build silentPC's. Around the time I was doing small Atom boxes I moved to Macs which were much quieter, but still not good enough. To get really quiet performance you needed a Mac Mini with SSD, which wasn't an option until recently, and it's a Mini after all. My 2009 Mac Pro wasn't quiet enough.*

Anyhow I shelled out the $$ for the nMP because the noise profile had to be the lowest of any computer with that design, and it had the power. I've been more than happy, I absolutely can't hear anything from it in my VERY QUIET home office.

The fan has two sounds coming from it. One, a low frequency "woosh" of the air moving through it. Two, the fan has a slightly "wobbly spindle" sound that's pure fan. Higher frequency but not high. I can't hear the sound at all unless I put my ear right at the top of the computer.

* I'm a life long classical musician (formerly professional) so my ears are quite sensitive and trained, FWIW.

My teacher has a mac Pro and even when he is in VPR in lightwave scrubbing through an animation with all cores going its dead silent... And I am very sensitive to noise especially in quiet environments

I had to put all my hard disks under my desk cause of the noise they make compared to the new Mac Pro. I didn't notice the HD's noise with my previous loud 2008 Mac Pro.

I agree its really not that loud just annoying for a 5K machine. Usually I have music, TV etc on so its a mute point. Its not going to be a deal breaker but its frustrating esp if some do not do it.

I could hear a weak whine coming from my Apple Thunderbolt Display and Apple Cinema Display if my mind is not concentrated on anything other than my head. I am hearing such a noise right now when I am typing this post, because I am currently concentrated on it.

Is it just a tinnitus? I hope not! Otherwise, it is bad to my hearing!

I can hear a stronger whine coming from my Sennheiser MM550-X headphone when nothing is played to it.

The first time I noticed such a noise was when I put the keyboard of my retired Motorola V3 mobile phone close to my ear.

I suspect that such a noise exists in many different kinds of electronic devices. For example, such a noise may be heard if an ear is put close to an LCD (LED) TV set.

If it does not disturb me when I concentrate on my work, then I guess it is acceptable to me.

Let us hope that all the manufacturers of electronic devices can get rid of such an electronic noise.

If I am allowed, let me coin a word for fun: Whinegate. Ladies and gentlemen, here we have the whine gate of the late 2013 Mac Pro.

Inside the machine.

Well cause I never thought that they could be something wrong with the computer fan in the first place, so I thought the headphone jack is somehow giving out that sound or something.

But yeah, there was a sound very similar to the coil whine but I just kept on using it and eventually the sound just disappears.

I had the coil whine occur once, after I started the first time and dragged some data over to the new drive. Haven't heard it since.

checked the mac pro out at 2 different malls today and i heard one whining and the other was quiet but that apple store had a lot of people in it so the noise was probably drowned out.

In case someone hasn't heard what the coil whine can sound like, I have two recordings up (they're amplified).

When idle it's quite uniform, but as you can hear in the "mouse move" one it can become quite irregular and loud. Mouse move literally means that's the only difference between the two, actually moving the mouse causes the frequency and intensity to change. My nMP was about 1.5m away and I heard it without listening for it.

Must be as per user hearing...I dl your file and listened at max level and both sounded the same to me...A very quiet hum.

Wow, interesting how human senses works :) I can hear it clearly and a couple of friends have ranged from having a really hard time hearing it to hearing it immediately. This also shows that units can have the issue without people knowing about it, keep in mind that the recordings are amplified by 300% (iirc).
Did you listen with decent head phones?
