I was told years ago when you enter sudo in the terminal you have to be careful bad things could happen?
Yes, that's right. extremely bad things could happen since you're telling your Mac to step aside and do what you say to him (you are becoming super user).:)

That is why you should always check the command someone is telling you to type (or app to install).

If you don't mind where did you get your SSD 850? Samsung and Amazon has them for same price 300.00
I'll have to double check later as for some reason I'm now asking myself if I actually have an 840. Regardless I bought one in PCWorld and the other one eBay.

EDIT: Mine is an 840EVO.

I was told by a tech at Samsung the 850 is faster and cheaper than the 840. Any way do you know what model of Sand Disk is the same and Sansung's 850?
Thanks

They should not make any difference in real world for a normal user.

All doing about 500MB/s sequential read write (with TRIM enabled)

All doing about 30MB/s 4k random read.

I have a $30 120GB SSD (link in my signature), and it perform virtually identical as the $500 1TB 840 Evo in real world (or course, I mean speed, not capacity)

IMO, no need to care that much. Just pick the cheapest one. If you really want to pick a “better” one, choose a model that can provide longer warranty. Which may be the only factor that you can actually benefit from it.

Thanks I just ordered 24 GB RAM from DMS for 119.00 I got the 1333 my old ram is 1066 that was before I flash my Mac to be a 5,1 so I hope it recognized the new 1333. They will take it back if not they have a lifetime warranty. As soon as Sand Disk wakes up I'll call them and see how they compete with samsung.

I have a 2009 MP flashed converted to 5,1

It will still be recognized as 1066 RAM if you have original CPU.
For 1333 RAM to be recognized as it should you have to have CPU that supports 1333 speeds.

I have 1333MHz RAM, but still with the original CPUs it shows this

Actually, no. Just the processor that supports 1333MHz RAM speeds, as you can see in this sticky
Screen Shot 2017-11-22 at 12.35.23 AM.png
There are both types, Westmeres that doesn't support 1333MHz and Nehalems that does.

I didn't know that, but the 2,26 Ghz processor is unable to produce the RAM speed@ 1333 MHz according to the list you posted.

It will be only recognized as 1333 Mhz if you install a Westmere processor.
So should I exchange it back for 1066 unless the price is mot too much" But I have another question since it was easy to make my 2009 think it's a 2010, my daughter in in a worse situation with a 2007 iMac is there a way for her to change it to 2010?

You mean this page?

It's just cosmetic, you can make it display whatever you want

That's right and that is what i said in post #57, but just wanted to add that there are both some Nehalems and Westmeres that will downclock RAM to 1066 .That it isn't microarchitecture dependent (in this case).
So should I exchange it back for 1066 unless the price is mot too much
Not really, the difference is just few benchmark numbers. So if the price is ok, just use 1333MHz RAM.
Who knows, maybe someday you'll put some stronger CPU that will dectect right speed of the RAM.

As @h9826790 said, if it is just cosmetics you're after, no problem.
But MacPro 4,1 and 5,1 are the same machines, with 5,1 just having newer firmware.
iMac 2007 and 2010 are completely different generation of everything.

Is there a big difference between

Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM)

Samsung 850 PRO - 1TB - 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-7KE1T0BW 75 bucks more

In terms of performance, for normal daily use, IMO no big difference.

But their warranty should be different (10yr vs 5yr). I will say this is the main difference.

Also, their expected life span is about 60yr vs 20 year. However, I don’t think anyone should plan to use a single hard drive for 20yrs anyway. So, even it seems the difference is huge, but practically should be more or less the same (we don’t even know if SATA port still there after 20 years).

So before I order from Amazon is this the correct SSD for my Old Mac Pro 2009 That I can put on the Accelsior S card at OWC ( its down to 39 bucks now) https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-...47948&sr=8-3&keywords=Samsung+SSD+850+EVO+1TB

I have two of those OWC Accelsiors with a Samsung EVO 850 (512 GB) in my Mac Pro's. After a couple of months the write speed went down. Enabling TRIM solved this problem. I recommend enabling TRIM. The Mac sees this disks installed on a PCI Accelsior SATA III as external. It takes a few seconds more to boot from the Accelsior. My old MacBook 2007 with a Samsung 850 boots faster. Anyway, I am glad I bought the Accelsiors. Good luck.

I took advantage of the recent OWC sale to put a Accelsior S into my 4,1 -> 5,1. The Sandisk 480 (a few years old, but spec'd for Sata-3) had been located in the spare optical drive slot. I installed the SSD/Accelsior into PCIe slot 4 (top most). 10.13.1 boot times from cold start to login screens were between 34-35 seconds for both locations, so no difference. Note that my boot times are fast because, at the moment, I have just the original 8GB memory installed. Upping this to more memory will dramatically increase boot times.

A bit of help, or explanation please...
I installed a SanDisk SSD PLUS 240 with Mercury Accelsior S adapter....I am getting about same or less speeds than when it was in the drive bay.

Adapter is in a x4 slot, one slot empty between graphic card and the adapter. TRIM enabled, PRAM and SMC reset, still the same results. Boots relatively fast, and apps are mostly quick to open.

Blackmagic says the SSD is read only, not sure why, but AJA reads and reports read speeds of 98 to 190ish MB/sec.

As well, the drive is seen by system as external. Any possible way to change?

thanks for any help or clarification.

I never own / try this OWC adaptor, but recognise as external is normal. All hard drivers connected via PCIe slots are considered external on the cMP.

However, the "read only" is definitely something wrong. But since this your boot drive. You may try to boot into recovery partition, and then perform both partition and disk first aid. Hopefully it can fix the permission issue. HOWEVER, if the SSD was 100% OK when connected directly to the native SATA II port, before I try any fix. I will put that back to one of the SATA II port and Test again. Just in case it's the adaptor causing the issue.

If the SSD work flawlessly again in the SATA II port, then you better call OWC and ask for support / refund, etc. It's not the SSD / macOS fault. No point to fix the item that's not the root cause.

You can also check the drive speeds immediately after running disk utility. They should be a lot better. Try AJA System Test instead of BlackMagic.

I have dowloaded AJA, but the read speeds are not any better than what BM demonstrated....I have not yet switched the slot, but I plan on this this weekend.

I plan on trying this weekend when I have the time to test the system. TBA
