lol, the professor must have wanted to punch you in the face. also, how does it save trees? the handout is already printed out, and trees are a great renewable resource

I said it jokingly. Though it could save him from printing out extras if he runs out I suppose. The professors were quite intrigued by it as well.

Just out of interest, how did you execute it/

What did you take the picture with, and how did you get it your pad?

I have a decent canon compact camera and a MacBook pro. I saved it as PDF and used itunes to add it to goodreader. It took about 2-4 minutes to do. It was very readable.

I can even waste 30 seconds in class :(

I think next time I'll just keep the paper and upload it to the ipad once class has ended. It was kind of a bummer that I couldn't continue to work while it transferred.

I did manage to scan my textbook while I was at work and put it on the iPad. I would much rather carry one device rather than 2-3 textbooks.

I'm very impressed at what it is capable of. I can see this making my academic studies much much easier.

I wish I could scan it - in fact, I might do just that over the summer holidays. It's a real pain this is.

Btw, when you take a pic/scan textbook, how did you store the images? I wish there was an app to make a book out of images of its pages :D - this gives me an idea for next iPhone OS app...

I assembled them into a PDF. I haven't scanned it for OCR but I can always do that if I find a need to search through the text books. My scanner at work is a nice commercial scanner and I just scanned them while it was slow. I guess I should consider myself lucky.

ah. I could use the one at home - but I don't think OCR can deal with images :(

So you had your iPad, iPad cable, Laptop, Camera, and camera cable all hooked up in the middle of class? I don't think the profs here would like that...

But I did use mine in class today. My only gripe with pages is how you can't access the toolbar in landscape mode. Typing is really not bad with the Apple case holding it up at 30 degrees. Not as fast as typing on a Macbook but fast enough to keep up in class. Plus it is way lighter than my laptop and I don't have to carry its charger with me.

It wasn't too much of a hassle. The camera used sd. And the MBP has an sd slot. In the future I will have the sd adaptor for the iPad. That will allow me to bypass the computer entirely.

I've been using it all week. Using ishowu HD to rip lectures from silverlight and loading them onto the iPad too. Quickly becoming my new favorite device.

Because I wanted the freedom of flexibility in setup, etc...and wanted to keep iPad in its case during use with keyboard, I decided on this setup:

First, I purchased a standard book holder from Staples, found here. Then, I purchased the Apple Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard and use them together.

The only downside to this is not having the ability to charge the iPad during typing sessions. However, with a 10 hour battery life, all it takes is a little prudence before beginning a day of school or a long typing session to make sure I can charge it. Plus, if **** really hits the fan, I can just plug it in and let it sit on the charger bending the cord 90 degrees. Either way, this setup works perfectly for me.

EDIT: The total price after tax for both is about $85. Putting it about $20 less than the dock/keyboard option and allowing the flexibility of what I mentioned earlier. At only $15 more than the Keyboard Dock combo, it allows for a ton of flexibility.

Does not that demonstrate the shortcomings of the iPad? You could do this all with just one device (like iPhone). In general, it does not look like iPad was designed with productivity in mind.

I love the iphone but the camera isnt detailed enough. I would gladly take 2 minutes and capture a document to avoid carrying it in my pack all semester. The iPad is not perfect, but it is going to make my life much easier. I am sure it will make alot of other students much more organized and productive.

It just depends how they choose to use the device. Some students are going to sit in the back and play games all class.

I havent purchased Pages yet, but it might be possible to use it upside down. That way you would be able to charge it from the top. I know the Notes app allows you to do this. It might be a little strange, but if it gets the job done...

--Edit- Assuming you are using pages for typing sessions.

Sorry, but how were you not the laughing stock of the classroom?

You took a photo with a digital camera, pulled out your laptop, transferred the SD card to a laptop, converted it to PDF, plugged in and synced the iPad, then put the iPad away again... all to view a single-page handout? On top of that, you already had a laptop which can take notes and view PDF as well as or better than an iPad.

l'd have been laughing my ass off, to be honest.

Pumped at the overwhelmingly positive response here. When I pick up my 2nd gen iPad for university, it'll be for note taking in class, and fun out of class! :D

Wondering now if the physical keyboard will even be needed...might just upgrade my wired Apple keyboard with a wireless one and used it with iPad as needed.

Its the first day, I wanted to see how the work-flow was. Like I said in the future, once the adapter ships, it should be much easier.

That class was pretty laid back. I wouldn't do that in the middle of an English class with 20 people.
