Assuming this was in reference to the fingerprints. It's one thing to look at fingerprints on the phone or tablet, which I can clean off frequently. It's another to look at fingerprinters on my monitors, which do not (or should not) according to me have to be cleaned frequently.
Again, this is YOU. not everyone. I always laugh at the fingerprints comment. Its not easier to clean a tablet than a screen if you are using it via touch. As soon as you use your phone or tablet you have finger prints. It's a silly argument.

Its not. Because of the way they are used, tablets and phones are protected by glass. What is ok on that device category.
I wouldn‘t want glossy/glassy surfaces on my laptop though.

It's your silly argument not mine. It's a heck of a lot easier to clean up the fingerprinters on my phone than my 27" monitors. But that has nothing to do with I don't think windows based tables are useful, to me.

I remember disliking the windows' "Start" button with its' awful stack/square design made up for the convenience of touch users on Win laptop. Because for me, as a mouse user, i have to travel long distances to select the thing i need with the mouse.
I only hope that something similarly horrible won't come to MacOS with touch enabled devices.

I guess the MacOS Big Sur has touch adapted design, because mainly you can use Ipad to screen share or remote desktop.
For these reasons, the OS design is touch friendly.

NextCloud is NextCloud. No one owns them. They publish their code on github, and you can find their license here:

I use NextCloud, and I plan on using them in future. Cheaper and way better solution than anything apple/google/ms can offer. At least for my use case scenario. And if you know how to set it up for your own needs, NC is brilliant!

I'm also glad that they are growing rapidly. They are turning profit since 2016., and it's nice to see that a project like this one can succeed.

I don't think so. Just my personal and uninformed opinion but given the high cost of Macs, and they're now on a completely different platform. Its not going see a tidal wave of new buyers. The people who were going to get macs will continue. The people who are on the fence will stay on the fence for the time being and those who need windows, will continue to buy PCs.

While the processing power is purportedly to be great, as is the battery life, I don't see it driving more sales - at least to move the needle on the marketshare
In my case, I abandoned Mac after I invested heavy pre Intel, and my iMac performance began looking very sad compared to Intel PCs. I continued to follow Apple and eventually switched from Android to iPhone 11 for privacy and security reasons. This peaked my interest in Apple again, but the Macs were under powered and in unsuitable enclosures throttling. I built my own PC's and handily built something much better and cheaper than anything Apple offered. M1 came along and the issues are gone. No more thermal throttling (yet, I'm still skeptical about future models), great performance, keyboard fixed, awesome battery life, and I bought a MacBook Pro. That's all it takes, a competitive product and I'm back on board. The ecosystem alone will not keep me in, but if the product is good I'll pay extra for the ecosystem and privacy and security. Apple is terrific, but it's very easy to walk away to the completely dominant ecosystem anytime, and they should remember that when designing hardware.

No I was quoting the guy saying synology rocks quoting a person talking about next cloud.

I've used next cloud but got rid of it because I couldn't find a easy way to create locations from different hdd sources.

I also diddnt like the fact that the files stored on next cloud are locked in permission with next cloud app so if you decide to swap the hdd over, you can't access the files anymore.

Next cloud was formerly known as own cloud btw

I think you mean OneDrive. I have a Microsoft 365 account so have tons of storage (1Tb x 5 users) and the fact it's baked in to Windows makes it very slick. It syncs flawlessly with the Photos app (similar to iCloud photos) and the integration with Office is just superb.

Like iCloud, the free 5Gb is a bit pointless. Better off with Google Drive (15Gb) or Mega (50Gb with caveats) for a free tier.

Same here, We all have 1TB of onedrive space which is a much better deal than icloud storage for us. Onedrive is great. Our photos instantly upload to the drive from our iPhones, and I can access it via any device we own.

I don't like that its baked into windows, but I use it and i have a subscription and you can't beat the 1TB of storage.

Since I don't use a Mac, having iCloud storage and using that, makes little sense. I found their windows apps to be buggy, and having a bonjour service running is a bit annoying.

Apple's 5GB of free space, is really only useful if you just use an iPhone and email. I do think the 99 cents for 50Gb is a nice deal but for me, being on a PC, the 1TB of space is a lot more economical and useful.

I like that each member of your family gets a full 1tb of storage. Thats a much better deal than apples 2tb shared storage. I am looking at purchasing an extra 1TB of storage for our onedrive plan. I will be using lots this year for work.

sadly there is no way out of iCloud if you want to backup your iDevices without any additional work 🤷‍♂️

My idevices are not important enough to me to have backups anyways. All my contacts port over from both outlook and my sim card.

Sure, Apple hardware will continue to evolve and improve - but their locked down system and unappealing services are increasingly frustrating to navigate. So I realize I need to be cross platform

bingo!
yes other computer manufacturers produce laptops that are unserviceable and worse service, but i feel a sense of freedom using the dell xps were i can install a larger ssd drive, any program i need and even a new battery in minutes without ungluing and un-assembling the entire chassis. Every year one of my  devices are deemed unsupportive and get limited in exchanging files or even stops syncing reminders due to some software update from that week that prevents that action.

when i heard about the M1 chip being able to use iPad programs on a MacBook years ago, i was thrilled!
when i realized this theory won't happen in february, i was let down and lost interest investing into a M1 notebook.

Now for those keeping score at home, im still using  as my main tool for my cartoons and entertainment but will start using the Dell XPS more often and try to get into windows 10 more.
I'm still using a mid-2012 MacBook Pro because I can replace parts of it myself. I don't have a high resolution display but the drive and RAM are replaceable.

I got an Omen by HP laptop computer and to my surprise, it's difficult to get into it to replace drives or RAM. The battery bulged because there is no intelligent charging system, and the replacement apparently was disconnected while I was carrying the machine, so it reports no battery, even though it's still heavy.

Windows 10 works sufficiently well NOW, after it ate itself three times. It's surprising that Catalina is much more stable, given all the complaints.

Given the complaints about the recent MacBook Pro machines, I'd still rather have this one. The Macs to come will be interesting, but they have some problems to handle before I will spend my money.

That is one thing I like about dell systems I own. They are all easy to upgrade, replace parts and overall are user friendly. Windows 10 is awesome now. I cannot stand MacOS. I was hoping for some new functionality in the BigSur update, but meh. it's always the same with MacOS.

what i loved about the ssd upgrade on the Dell XPS last week was that was easier, faster and i could include the files i needed from an external HD while OSX time machine slams everything onto the new drive, even the past iTunes mistakes.

I just ordered a new Dell inspiron 15 3000 for my mom. I am going to suprise her since her old acer has broken hinges etc. I am going to set it all up and see how she likes it. If she does, I am going to swap out the HDD in it and put a SSD in it's place. That will take me all of 15 min on the dell. They are so easy to change parts.

Just plug it into a computer and you can back it up that way. In all honesty, that's all I do for mine and my families iPhones.

For me M1 has an immense impact of how consider the Mac platform.
In the last years I often tried to implement my workflows to iPadOs and after the first 3 or two weeks of excitement I always get back to my Mac. There were always situations where iPadOs limits your workflow or at least the speed of the workflow. For example Videocalls (when you want to multitask with another app), file management, working in large excel files, etc.

Now, with M1 Chip, the advantages of an iPad in form of better battery life, no Fan, very snappy and all this in a very compact and lightweight gadget, have shrunk or still no longer exist. If an iPad want to compete with an MacBook Air, you need the Magic Keyboard and then the iPad is heavier and in my opinion not so compact as the MacBook Air.

The only time when I miss the iPad is for signing and marking documents and for some media consumption - that's why I like my iPad mini (and I hope there will be a new generation which supports Apple Pencil 2 and a slightly larger Display).

With Intel, the MacBook (Air or Pro) was a hot device which could not compete in battery life with the iPad. Now things have totally changed: The MacBook is a cooling device with its cold aluminum body ;-) and still get a workload done.

while this works for backing up the phone, it's not the same as using iCloud. :) Wife and kids are also terrible at caring for their devices, so it has to work out of the box without additional steps

But it's ok to pay for it, it's just sad, that iCloud sucks so much as an OneDrive/Dropbox replacement
