I've seen several people here using battery life as the main justification for upgrading from an Air or Air 2 to the new 2017 iPad. I'm just curious and this is in no way meant to be a criticism, but what is everyone doing on their iPads that a battery life of 9-10 hours is unacceptable but 11-12 is worth giving up a laminated screen and thinner, lighter chassis? On the iPhone, I get placing battery life at such a high priority since getting an iPhone through the day has historically been a challenge. But with an iPad, I just can't imagine staring at a screen for 10 hours in a single day, and that's coming from someone who takes his to work and uses it to take notes. Seems to me that 10 hours is more than enough to get me through the day. At that point, what does it matter how much extra battery is remaining? You can always just charge it overnight. Is there another use case that I'm missing?

For me I use my iPad after work to read, surf the net, YouTube. On my air 2 I was charging it every 2-3 days. My new iPad 2017 it is 4-5. Now I could have just got an air 2 that had a weaker battery than normal but the new iPad seems to give me an extra day and a half of use before I need to recharge it. I know it is anecdotal and not scientific but out of all the iPads I have owned, the air 2 seemed to get the worst battery life for me. I agree I could just recharge it nightly but for me it is just one less thing for me to do.

Fair enough, I also charge my 9.7 inch Pro about once every 2-3 days. I guess for me the better screen experience on the Air 2 and iPad Pro while using the device is worth having to charge it a bit more often. But it's definitely a matter of personal preference!

Air2 display (reflections)
vs
ipad2017 (reflections)

the screen is definitely a downgrade.

the screen has an air gap between the glass and the screen, so it is going back to the old build when the device sounded hollow and cheap when tapping. so basicly, they made a new ipad to be as a budget priced device to get the price abit lower and "to fish" people to buy it.

you have two choices: budget or premium. if you hate the hollow screen (as i do), you need to buy the pro althought you dont need a pencil (a reason to buy the pro model - now the reason is to get better screen build). i quess they realized that people who dont need a pencil, didnt buy pro models and the air2 was sufficient for them. now you are forced to buy pro or to suffer from the old screen build (hollow, feels cheap).

imo, they should have kept the laminated screen and not going back to the old build which is awful. but again, maximizing the profit margings at all cost. i think only people who doesnt realize the difference between laminated and the old screen buys the new ipad. i wish people would give the finger and not buying it... but most of buyers arent tech-savvy and for them anything advertised as "new" must be better than old.

if i bought ipad now, i would find air2 when it is still available on the same price.

For me, I prefer the reflections of the iPad 2017 over the very visible finger smudges of the newer screens of the Air 2 and Pros.

Im wondering if anyone has upgraded to the new iPad simply for the updated A9 chipset and improved battery life. I'm not sure if it really would be a worthwhile upgrade although even so a $300 total cost of accessories and the iPad are a lot more appealing than $600-$1000 for a iPad Pro.

Upgrade from the Air 2? I was confused when I read that until I realized you meant downgrade. The 2017 iPad is a cheap knock off to get Air 1 and below users to spend money again on iPads. There's little benefit to this downgrade for Air 2 owners.

As a huge fan of the iPad, I don't see any reason for someone to jump from the Air 2 to the newest iPad. That doesn't make sense to me.

The iPad Air 2 is the best iPad bar none. Sure, some outliers will personally disagree, but the real reason the Air 2 was canned is because it's so damn good. Once you hit the Air 2 it's good for another 5 years (outliers excluded) so Apple's ability to keep the revenue engine going is not as easy as with the new iPad. Apple knows 2017 owners will be forced to upgrade before the Air 2 dies. Bottom line, the Air 2 doesn't make the revenue but the 2017 iPad is a revenue generator. Apple wont make the same mistake again by real easing an Air 3 which means most Air 2 users won't upgrade for a long time.

Had the new iPad had 256gb storage, then maybe. No more capacity than an Air 2? Why bother?

I still don't get why anybody needs this much storage. Does normal users really need more than 32Gb?

As I said, each has to make their own choices.

For some $1000 is just pocket change

People like that should pocket change a charity box instead of indulging their own materialistic selfishness. Perhaps they should keep doing that until they reach that $1k which they don't consider pocket change then they might have started to reconnect with humanity.

In the end it's just a device for web viewing. As a scociety we are trained that consumerism is good, we spend so we are. Guess who profits from your now empty/minus funds bank account. It rarely brings long term happiness.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Companies are people too, remember!

I'm definitely looking forward to 3 Gb of RAM is the minimum.

I refuse to buy another iPad until we're at 5gb minimum.

It's one of the steps people use to overcome buyer's remorse. There's no real difference in usability between 10 hours and 12 hours as most people (bar outliers) simply don't use it that long without recharge.

.

Excellent observation. The Air 2 had too many features that made the Pro just like meh. No people look at the distance the 2017 is from the Pro and Kahn-ching. More revenue for Apple for those who want to look at a proper display, and the iPad is all about the display.

"People like that" likely give more to charity than you make in multiple years for tax purposes.

People have a right to spend their money the way the wish not have to listen to others that judge them.
