Using an iPhone 8 now, and just can’t make a freakin’ decision here...

The phones are so similar, with the XS being slightly better in terms of camera & screen. If the XR was the same size (or slightly smaller) than the XS, I would be 100% on board, I’m just don’t know if I want a phone as big as the XR, but I don’t really want to pay $999 for the XS. Ugh. #FirstWorldProblems

Just wait when the XR gets released. Check it out at the store. Then make a decision.

I would go red XR all the way. I hated seeing those micro-scratches on the band around the X in both color options. I've also never been a fan of OLED which have a shorter life expectancy than LCD. The XS does have stronger glass on both sides and that stainless steel that's prone to scratches

I'm actually more torn between a red OnePlus 6T, red XR, or black Pixel 3 since I could also be moving from T-Mobile to Verizon next month. That red OnePlus 6 is simply FIRE. Ferrari RED.

Since the XS doesn't come in red and I'm not a fan of that new gold color option, that's the main reason I'm choosing the XR. Buying an iPhone has been more of a fashion statement and showing off a design than the actual specs. I would also save money too and use it for the new Apple Watch.

Is there a reason you need to upgrade at all? What features do you need in the new phones that your current phone can’t do?

Also consider a used X

I'd say the decision is a cost thing in the end. If you want and can afford the best available, go the Xs. If you don't want to spend that much and are fine with the tradeoffs, then go for the Xr. It's not all that complicated really. I would wait to see the Xr in person first though.

From watching the videos on YouTube the display on the XR looks a lot less vibrant I think there will be a lot of complaining on here about it when it is released. The blue XR is what I would go for if the screen was better. Buy what you want and can afford.

XS has the smaller size I prefer but XR is the only model to offer my favorite color and 128 GB. Also doesn't have the scratch-prone stainless steel band AND ugly vertical camera hump on the back.

I've used many beautiful phones. I'm a phone connoisseur. I even had a gold LeEco Le S3 that looked better than my glacial silver HTC One M7 and titanium silver Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. My first Android is my namesake and it was a beauty for its time.

I'll say it again, the RED iPhone XR is the best-looking iPhone design since the space gray 5s. That's 5 years ago. I can't say space gray SE because it just copied the 5s minus the chamfered edges.

Never was a fan of the slate 5. Had it briefly. Scuff City. Space gray 5s corrected it. The red XR surpasses the matte black 7 and red 8 fairly easily. I say 4th best iPhone design of all-time.

I still don't like glass backs and I just find the 2G and 5-series had the best build quality for ANY iPhone. The red XR only ranks behind the black 4/4s among iPhones with glass backs.

If you get the XS, nobody will notice you have the new one unless you bought the gold one. Looks tacky to me like the gold 5s catered for girls who carry around white purses. And the red (or even black) XR looks better than the gold XS by far in my eyes.

Whoa that’s a lot of opinion, which you are entitled too, but I’d disagree with a lot of it. Red is your favorite color, thats fine, blue is mine. But I still think the white/chrome looking iPhone X (and XS) is crazy beautiful, and I tend to go for the white devices in general. The gold I think also looks fantastic, not tacky at all. So to each their own.

That's kinda weird since the colors of the X with OLED look exactly the same as the 7 Plus and I guess 8 plus/XR, besides the blacks which are better in OLED.

I would sacrifice the smaller size, OLED, and Telephoto of the XS for better battery life, cheaper price, 128 GB option, and for the color red. The latter two options seems to be exclusive for the XR. I don't want to pay $150 to get a 256 GB XS when I can barely fill 128 GB.

If you have used the S7 edge, S8, S9, the XR isn't that much bigger than the XS. Only about 7 mm taller. Not the 16 mm gap against the Plus model. The 150 mm in height is quite livable. A middleground for typing.

Since most people type in portrait, X's keyboard was like typing on a "5 Pixel. Just a taller display but we didn't gain any width. The XR's "6.1 is more equal to the S7 edge's "5.5 from two years ago or the current S8/S9.

Had the XR been just a duplicate of the X with some compromises, I would've picked the XS. But it isn't. XR copied more what the SE did to the 6s than what the 5c did to the 5. Offers better SoC, Face ID, and camera than the X. Wasn't as gimped as expected.

All the XR's compromises are livable. If you fall into the trap of wanting the BEST OF THE BEST and will pay top dollar for it because you're a tech elitist, then Tim Cook would be smiling from ear-to-ear seeing that. For the average Joes and Janes, we don't care. As long as it JUST WORKS.

iPhone XR (128 GB) = $799
Pixel 3 XL (128 GB) = $949?

Too easy. An iPhone XR is offering better value than a Pixel. Winner, winner, chicken dinner...

I just wonder if Apple will ever develop a dark mode for iOS that could leverage the advantage of an OLED display? The display is one of the biggest consumers of power and it could make a big difference for battery life. Given that dark mode is coming to Mojave, maybe it could be lined up for iOS 13. I guess we will know soon. This (possibly forlorn) hope is influencing my buying decision.

I would have preferred the XR as well at this price difference. But the XR will simply be too big for me (the size of the X is already borderline annoying to me compared to 6/7/8). If you fear that may be the case for you as well, then perhaps better to wait 4 weeks and compare the XR and XS in store.

I usually don't get excited by iPhones. This time I am for the XR. It's going to slay the other two XS models in sales. Surpass the X model easily too.

The populist iPhone. The people's champion iPhone. The best value from an iPhone since the SE.

5c - had the 5's year-old specs

SE - had the 6s' six-month-old specs

XR - has the current XS specs with the 8's display and 8 Plus' price point.

Already better value than the Pixel 3 XL is expected to be.

There really isn’t much of a size differential. Have a look and compare: https://www.hotspot3d.com/

If anybody is torn between the XS and the XR, they need to wait until there’s more information available on the latter. Review videos etc.

Lol I cannot tell if you are trolling, or if you truly believe what you are typing. The XR has the current XS specs?
- The XR has the same 326PPI as the iPhone 4. That phone came out in 2011... XS is 458 PPI
- The XR is not even 1080p, which the XS is
- The XR does not have the telephoto zoom lens
- The XR can only perform the brokeh effect on humans, not objects
- The XR does not have 3D Touch
- The XR is IP67 rate water resistance. The XS is IP68
- The XR tops out at 256gb. The XS tops out at 512gb
- The XR is LTE advanced. The XS is Gigabyte LTE advance
- The XR has 3GB Ram. The XS has 4GB Ram
- The XR does not have HDR display. The XS does.
- The XR is aluminum. The XS is stainless steel

None of those things listed need to mean a thing to you. You may look at that list and say that not one of them, let alone all of them, matter to you at all and hence the lower price is icing on the cake. But I would perhaps pump the brakes on your 'people's champion' device claim. It has some great features for the price. But lets not go around saying it has the same specs as the XS lol.

Apple’s entire success is down to that being untrue. They attract people who are willing to pay overinflated prices, in your case $749 for a 720p screen. Last year it was $1,000 for the X. People bulked but sales speak for themselves.

At this point a lot of opinion bluster is about self-justifying our purchase choice. It’s not unusual to see posts full of hyperbole about the phone we’re buying and casting shade on the ones we’re not.

But ultimately it’s subjective. You’re getting the XR. Good for you. I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. I think it will provide you with an inferior experience that you’re trying hard to qualify. But who’s to say what you enjoy/can afford. It doesn’t really help to start characterising people who made a different call than you.

There seems to be a lot of love for the Xr and He doesn’t seem to care about the ppi.

Go figure.

Thanks for the video.

I think he hit the nail on the head.

“With this phone Apple literally made the iPhone X clone that android oems have been trying to make all year, they just did it better. So this is it, game over, this is the phone, android you literally handed the W to Apple this year”

Honestly did not expect that.

I think the iPhone Xr is going to take a lot of sales from android oems over the next year.

Personally I’d rather get the Xr, but after installing iOS 12 on my 7p there’s likely no need to upgrade this year.

What’s that about the bokeh effect only working on objects? First time I‘m reading this. I can imagine this to be the case, but has it been confirmed?

Note that the XS doesn't really have a 458 ppi screen, at least when using LCD standards. LCD ppi for iPhones includes 3 subpixels. In contrast, for the Samsung Pentile display in iPhones, they are missing a whole bunch of red and blue subpixels. Also, the XR may also have better viewing angles.

That said, text quality on the XS is better than text quality would be on the XR. Then again, if you're fine with the iPhone 8, you should be fine with the XR as well, since for all intents purposes, the screens are the same except for size.

I will also point out that for some strange reason, neither the XS nor X get Zoomed Display mode. The XR and XS Max both apparently do, however. Also, both the XR and XS Max in Standard Display mode get the fancy landscape view. The X and XS do not.

The XR also has the longest battery life out of all of them.

And there is a relatively inexpensive 128 GB option for the XR, at US$799.

That was from a tweet from someone attending the keynote. I haven't seen it confirmed yet, but perhaps it relies on face recognition to work.
