Dear God, why?

Do yourself a favor and buy a pair of cheap wireless headphones, use them for a week, and then report how you feel.

Cheap and wireless = latency. I spend more time watching video than listening to music.

I have airpods and love them. But you're paying a lot extra for wireless.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Going forward the focus will be on mastering one trade.
No real innovation needed to happen with the headphone jack, it's already mastered basically, so leaving it there while mastering wireless wouldn't have really affected anything. That's to say they could have easily done it if they chose to, and that it's basically really down to choice on their part and nothing that would have actually had any detrimental (or otherwise) effect if they didn't remove it.

No I’ve always disliked them certainly in the gym all they do is get in the way. Being pushed away from wired headphones was one of the best things apple have done for me personally. Didn’t realise how great wireless headphones are and how convenient they are for everyday use.

Thanks for elaborating. I agree that I prefer wireless over wired. I have been using BT for years, long before apple removed the headphone jack for the exact reasons you shared.

Agreed on the Airpods. I just picked some up a month ago - had been using Powerbeats2 Wireless headphones before. I only suggested getting a cheap pair because I don't know OP's financial situation and figured if they picked up a cheap pair they'd at least end up with a proof-of-concept and spend more on higher quality wireless headphones if desired.

Basically, wireless headphones are something you don't even realize you need until you actually use them. Once you do, going back to wired is really hard. Such loss of freedom.

Actually, compared to the competition, the AirPods are not really all that overpriced for the technology, battery life and simplicity you’re receiving. Some of the competition is priced considerably higher and doesn’t offer some of the features that the Airpods do.

It’s not that you were just beating a dead horse. You were locating where it’s buried, digging it up, reanimating the corpse, and then beating it to death again.

Oh and: still a fan of corded earbuds/headphones. Can buy decent sounding ones at a cheap price and one less thing you need to remember to plug in and charge (and can use on something that still has a 3.5mm plug [yes, Bluetooth headsets should work as well]).

Just upgraded from a 6S to an 8+. At the risk of beating a dead horse.....damn I miss the headphone jack!

I feel your pain. I use my SE more than my 8 because of that. That being said I still enjoy Apple products so I have accepted that the headphone jack is most likely not coming back. I just went and bought several adapters so I have one with me when I need it.

No, they won’t. But unless someone is not a true audiophile, I don’t think most consumers care about the sound. But wireless does serve the convenience in which I think the consumer is willing to make the trade off for without the freedom of wires and Bluetooth sound has improved over the years. As an owner of the AirPods, I can honestly say that I’m fairly impressed with the audio the AirPods, even though they are not wired quality, they still suffice given the excellent Battery life as well.
Yeah, fair enough. I didn't mean to be so final with my post. There is definitely a tradeoff with the convenience factor. I am an audiophile, and it matters to me. I also have never heard BT either, so I probably shouldn't even comment.

Some prefer convenience over sound quality. I personally Love quality, so no Bluetooth here. :D

I would say ‘quality’ is subjective and it depends on the individuals expectations when it comes to sound. Some Bluetooth headsets actually are adequate with sound, but nor am I indicating they are emanating the sound quality from a wired headphones either.

BT headphones will never sound as good either...

I was in that camp but I'm not so sure anymore since I bought the Audio Technica ATH SR5 BT. I have pretty high standards and to me they sound just bloody amazing wireless (you can use them wired aswell). Not bass heavy though if that's your style.
And the freedom gained from being unattached is fantastic. Easily the best purchase of last year.

I love wired headphones. I hate charging things.

To all the wireless lovers - keep using BT devices. A headphone jack doesn’t stop BT from working fine. The rest of us really like wired tech.

Apple just wants to sell more BT headphones. This was a business decision, not an aesthetic decision.

Somewhat related: I would recommend the Airpods. Amazing product that pairs seamlessly, decent audio and the battery life is stellar. 15 minutes of charging is equivalent to three hours of usage. I use them regularly for fitness.
You can't realistically say that the Airpods have decent audio; mine sound rubbish but convenience wins out sometimes.

OTOH my B & O H9i sound good and have a replaceable battery. They were £450, though.

Realistically, I can say that. Because the audio is _decent_enough for me and my needs when I do use them for working out. I’m not expecting the Airpods to have the quality of wired headphones and nor am I a true audiophile either (Which I don’t care to be). However, I don’t expect others also to share my expectations, but the Audio is suitable where I generally have no complaints.

The easiest guess is the OP already had some good quality wired earphones. In that case i doubt the suggestion would change the OP’s mind.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll go and look these up!

In which case can't you just use the free lightning adapter and alls good?

I believe so. A German magazine tested the adapter when released and found the sound quality already lower than the average jack that Apple used before.

It gets annoying when you use your wired stuff with other devices that don’t require the dongle and we’ve seen that a lot of people tend to lose the adapter for that reason.

Personally, I got a few adapters and attached them to the wired earphones almost permanently.
