Thanks for the recommendation. Once I find myself in a plateau I will definitely look for better products, on top of the usual stuff (changing the routine etc.). For the record, I also take creatine (I do notice a difference when I am using it and when I am not)..

I personally take creatine on the days of my workouts, but I try not to overtake it on my days off, because there are a lot of potential concerns with taking too much creatine (You can choose to read whatever you want based on Internet results on creatine), it does work really well, especially if you’re consistent and you’re loading with creatine, the downside to creatine, is when it saturates your muscles, some are under the impression that it will actually will take definition away from your muscles, because it uses a ‘bloating affect‘. [Which I kinda agree with.]

So far the week has gone somewhat as planned, 3x martial arts classes (4 hrs total), 1x lifting (I expect to do 1 more MA class, and 2x lifting sessions). I have to say, I am feeling quite pumped and more energetic despite some muscular soreness.

Secret remedy for muscle soreness or inflammation in the joints: Pineapple. I’ve Heard this works wonderfully, and I do eat about a pound of pineapple a week, I feel it works.

I am also looking for a decent lower back exercise that doesn't kill me while strengthening the lower back muscles at the same time..

As for food intake, I am now eating some lunch (tuna for now), and I moved the protein shake to the immediate post-workout slot. I am having breakfast (usually eggs and a slice of wheat toast).

Tuna is probably one of the highest sources of protein, but the biggest benefit isn’t just the protein, it’s the omega-3‘s and the fish oil. (Also Beneficial for the joints.)

[Side Note]:

If you have a Jimmy John’s in your area, try their tuna sub (#3 or #15), they actually have really good tuna combined with onions/celery/a mixture of Worcestershire sauce/slight amount of mayo. I always order double tuna, and the staff asks me ‘How can you eat that much’? Answer: I’m a bodybuilder. :D

Ah, I gotta try this. I like pineapple so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have started doing this a couple of months back, but for some reason I still believe that I am weak-ish in my lower back. I see improvements, but not enough... I might be have unrealistic expectations.

Very true. I also added back another category: beans. Doesn't really matter at this point which type of beans, they are all pretty good in fibers and proteins. Recipe is simple: put in crockpot add some water, go to work, come home to fully cooked beans. Add some bbq sauce before eating for flavor.

Thanks for the suggestion! (I always get the Italian... #9 I believe)

Tried Orangetheory Fitness. Seemed okay. Anyone here a member and have any comments? It's expensive, but my wife really wants to go so I'm considering canceling my existing gym membership so we can do it together.

Actually it does. There's some Mexican bean variety called peruano that's amazing. Had them first in Mexico and it's all I'll buy now. It's about 80 cents a pound.

Eating pinto beans after those is a huge bummer.

I think you'll love them. I used to buy pinto and navy beans all the time before then. It took me a few years to find stores that carried them here. I think they've become popular in recent years, and are referred to as mayacoba beans. I still buy black beans, though. They're useful for other things.

I'll check at Whole Foods or at Sprouts. I see that they are very easy to make and don't need overnight soaking.

Lunch favorite for me in spring and fall: tuna and white bean salad, recipe something along this line but anyway pretty simple and assorted ways to spice it up, i.e. red onion, lime etc. Gardening makes me hungry, this hits the spot.

We just opened an Orange Theory in my city about six months ago, I have not personally experienced it, but I know a registered nurse who uses it and really likes it. I guess they use some type of heart rate monitor attached during cardio sessions, the lighting is tinted orange to help refute ‘post workout headaches’ and you also have some type of assistant coach somewhat personalized to _your_ regiment. It wouldn’t be for me personally, but the reviews have been fairly good for what it is. Expensive yes, but I guess that depends on the individual and what they actually achieve from the club itself.

Oh, and I guess the ‘trainers’ are supposed to have a fairly extensive background understanding heart rhythms/cardio-based programs/etc.

Yes, it seems something like VO2 max to me. It was DARK. It's like a nightclub. I've had personal trainers before and I want to get back into marathon shape. I did well on my first (free trial) class. They have a "splat points" system where you earn 1 point for each minute you're in one of the two upper HR zones (orange and red). They claim if you can earn 12 splat points from a workout, your body achieves an "afterburn" where you can continue burning calories at an accelerated pace for 36 hours after the workout. I scored 51 and felt it was a good workout.

Only downside (aside from the price) is there is no "walk in and start working out freely" as you have to register for each class, but there does seem to be a social aspect to this as everyone there seemed to know each other.

I'm going to give it a go I suppose with the wife since it's month-to-month and will retain my existing gym membership parallel for a little bit.

Another new product I’m trying. I finished off the Elite Gold Mass gainer, not bad for what it had to offer.

I switched over to this brand, Dymatize. Highly rated and probably one of the best on the market, but the real benefit aside from the BCAAs/glutamine/leucine, is this 100% hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, A lot of protein-based powders do not offer ‘hydrolyzed solutions’.

It’s peanut-butter flavored, Post-workout-I mix two full scoops with 20 ounces of 2% milk/7 almonds/ 5G of creatine/3 ounces of oats and one banana= Pure Awesomeness.

Let me know how it goes. Why is a hydrolyzed solution important?

As for myself, I am somewhat injured (hamstring). Last week I did almost zero lower body workout, and zero martial arts. However, I went to the gym every day for upper body and core strength. I went back to MA yesterday night, but I could barely lift my left leg without feeling some pain. It sucks, but I'll keep working out just being very careful.
Weight is more or less unchanged (~175lbs), however it seems that the belly is going down... I just wished it was faster :)

I added another element to my diet: lentils. Easy to cook, and very nutritious. Also, according to the Italian tradition (no idea if other cultures share it), the more lentils you eat the more money you'll get. See you when I am a billionaire!

Hydrolyzed proteins allows for the breakdown of the Amino acids included, which makes an easier digestive process for your body to you able to synthesize all the necessary nutrients/ingredients to promote muscle growth. The problem with protein when digested, your body doesn’t absorb everything and for some, they may not absorb anything from certain protein powders, hydrolyzed solutions allows your body for better/higher absorption.

I stay away from any protein powders that are not hydrolyzed/or that don’t include a digestive enzyme breakdown for the protein powder, as there are quite a few protein powder base supplements on the market that don’t break down in your body very well, causing a disruption in your digestive system causing complications.

Leg/ankle (Anything lower torso) injury’s can take a while to heal, because you’re constantly using those same muscle groups every day to walk and maneuver/support your body weight, where you really can’t rest it fully. Light stretching is _crucial_.

Lentils, I don’t know that I’ve ever had them, I should try it. And if you become a billionaire based off that, could you at least hire me as a trainer? [I’m highly qualified and only charge $250 hourly. :D]

Yep. I have been stretching for a while now, however when you do a MA with lots of kicking you're also prone to this kind of injuries. I think that the leg is getting better but I will have to be careful for at least one more week even if the pain is entirely gone...

Lentils, I don’t know that I’ve ever had them, I should try it.

They're very easy to make. Just put them in very hot (not boiling) water for 20/30 minutes, then enjoy. You can add some sauce or whatever if you need more taste.
According to this, 1 cup/200g (cooked): 230calories, 1g fat (0g saturated), 40g carbs (16g fibers, 4g sugar), 18g protein.

[doublepost=1560344639][/doublepost]Friend of mine called me the other night, apparently he felt light headed at his workplace. He thought that he was only tired. Thankfully an elder lady convinced him to check his pressure as on the very same day the company was doing one of those health check initiatives. Reluctantly, he listened. Result: 164/109. Someone drove him to the doctor (they didn't want him to drive) where they found out some other issues. Apparently he is very close to something very serious happening.
According to him and the doctor, this is the result of three full years with fast food two or three times a day (mostly McDonald's), zero (literally zero) exercise, being overweight, and being stressed. Of course I offered to help him with diet and exercise and whatever, but boy. That was a wake up call that reinforced my will to be as athletic as I can (without being an Olympian of course!).

^. Regarding the ‘fast food’ incident with your friend, there was a documentary years ago with a movie called ‘Supersize me’ with Morgan Spurlock. He went to an extreme measure and ate McDonald’s three times a day for 30 days, showing his transition how fast food can negatively impacting one’s life because of all the ingredients that are included that are affecting his weight/endurance/cognitive abilities, shortness of breath, etc.

Now, obviously no sane individual would eat McDonald’s three times a day for 30 days at the level, but the idea is, _that_ type of food will make you feel like garbage, because of a lot of unnatural ingredients/unhealthy fats inside your body coupled with sugary soda.

It’s actually a decent movie, and in some aspects, that movie actually impacted McDonald’s future on how they treated fast food healthy options being offered and downgrading the ‘supersized’ option as well.

During the summer of 2018 I was approaching 300 pounds. I'm also 50 and 5' 10". According to BMI I'm extremely obese but I've also been a "large / big boned / whatever" person. Always tired and no energy, which as a nature / landscape photographer really stinks. End of 2018 / beginning of 2019 I started using My Fitness Pal mainly to log and see what I was eating throughout the day. Can't believe how many calories in a slice of pizza. Anyway, just from using that and also using other apps I started walking more and really focusing on what I ate and as of this morning I'm 250 pounds with a short term goal of 225 and long term goal of 200.

Yeah tracking the calories can really help! 50lbs in 6 months is great!

I finally found a diet plan that works for me. I'm not starving and it seems pretty steady. I had already gotten used to drinking water with every meal several years ago instead of pop, so I really just needed to adjust what I eat.
  • Breakfast: Low sugar quaker cinnamon apple oatmeal with walnuts and flaxseed powder mixed in.
  • Lunch: 8oz 1% milk mixed with chocolate peanut butter whey protein powder
  • Snack: Banana and/or a handful of low salt almonds
  • Dinner: 8oz lean seasoned baked chicken breast with a small amount of dipping sauce and a small low calorie side
  • Dessert: Fresh cut pineapple or 90 calorie fiber square
I had a similar diet in college with the high protein that let me get way down on weight. Kinda forgot about it but it seems to be working for my body again. The difference this time is adding a lot more fiber. Last year the doctor said I needed to cut down on salt and sugar. I did that and had good results in those areas this year, but now my cholesterol is starting to creep up and there is a history of heart attacks and early death in the late 40s and early 50s on both sides of my family so I'm taking it seriously. My biggest problem is that I'm kinda picky and don't like many vegetables, but I have found with more of a true hunger at dinner time, I am more open to eating new things.

As far as exercise goes, I've just been walking 4-5 miles most days. Previously I would walk 3-4 miles (didn't walk anywhere close to that much before getting an Apple Watch in 2015, which helped stop me from ballooning and brought my weight down to a certain extent), so I just increased walking distance a bit along with the reduction in calories in my diet. This week I am trying to do some strength training every few days. I don't want to get jacked though. I'm already kind of muscular naturally and probably because I keep myself busy in my spare time with manual labor doing things like landscaping, fixing stuff around the house, carrying my kids around (don't laugh, it's a thing), finishing my basement or building stuff in my woodworking shop. I just carry a lot of weight around my mid section. I'd like to strengthen my core though because I sometimes have back trouble.

So far I've been losing an average of 5.5lbs/week for the past couple weeks. I have a WiFi scale from Greater Goods that works really well and syncs everything automatically into their app and into Apple's Health app. It tracks my muscle %, water %, and fat %. From what I can tell, the absolute figures aren't super accurate, but they do show trends over time and are important for seeing how my body is reacting and tracking those changes. I set a goal that I get one cheat meal for every 5lbs lost and that has been a good motivating factor, especially towards the end of the week to make a push to eat out on the weekend. When I have a cheat meal, I don't go crazy either, but it's not exactly all that healthy. But I think the cheat meal is important for me to keep my sanity and keep moving forward.

The most important thing is I think this is a plan I can stick to for a long time until I reach my goal weight. That's the thing that people need to look for in a diet plan. If it's really awful you just aren't going to stay with it unless you have really wild levels of discipline, which most people don't. I'm a fairly disciplined person for most things and I have trouble with diets but this one is so much easier on me.

5lbs a week... I read multiple places that could be too much weight to drop too quickly.

Ah interesting, I had no idea about that.

164/109 That is INSANE. Yes he should FIX IT QUICK! No exercise, only fast food for an already overweight and stressed person is a bad combo...
I actually just cut on the Supersized me movie again as I have seen it once before years ago.

---> I gained a decent amount weight. I was in the 170s-180s which I guess for my height of 5 9 could be considered heavy at that weight too and now I am sitting at 217lbs. My goal is to eventually reach 175 and then go from there... Last 6 months to a year I drunk WAY too much beer, too much garbage foods (sweets/fast foods).
My biggest thing I have been having an issue with is my food. I am not a fan of cooking as in I don't like it and most of the things I cook don't taste the best. (Need to cook in bulk as well)
I know if the cooking was down pat I would be better off. I feel my energy is zapped as well and it is easier to jump in the car and grab a great tasting fast food burger and fries... but it is not the way to do it.

I have picked up on exercise my goal is walking for 30 minutes a day which is about 1 mile. It isn't much but its part of the plan. The diet cooking/taste is what I am struggling with.

If anyone has any suggestions that would make this a bit more easier or compatible would really be helpful!

My lifestyle is completely unhealthy. I always try to lose weight a few months before summer and then after summer is over I put all that weight back on. It's like 20 pounds back and forth. One of these days a heart attack is going to get me.
It depends on how much you weigh. :]
[doublepost=1560777347][/doublepost]
I am in full training mode :)
Unfortunately the plan I had in mind is not going to work, but I might have figured out a way to keep parts of it on my routine.

This week (M-Sunday) plan:
4x Martial Arts (I might substitute 1x MA with 1x swimming).
2x (maybe 3x) Weight Lifting.
7x full stretching sessions

Food (M-F) plan:
Monday
breakfast: 2 eggs
Lunch: nada.
Dinner: Filet Mignon

Tuesday:
breakfast: 2 eggs
Lunch: Protein Shake
Dinner: Roasted Chicken

Wednesday:
Breakfast: eggs burrito
Lunch: Protein shake
Dinner: Probably In 'n Out (Protein style double cheeseburger, no sauce)

Thursday:
Breakfast: 2 eggs
Lunch: Protein shake
Dinner: Baby back ribs.

Friday:
breakfast: eggs and turkey burrito
Lunch: Protein shake
Dinner: a couple of slices of pizza.

With the exception of In 'n Out, all the above are homemade (pizza including).
[doublepost=1558380423][/doublepost]

This. This should motivate you, at least at first. Not only that, if he sees that you're unhealthy (and he does see it), you're basically teaching that it's ok to be unhealthy so - potentially - you're also affecting his physical well being.

Atomic habits is a good way for people like us. Just go to the nearest gym/dojo/camp/whatever (it MUST be close to your house) and sign up. Then stick to this plan: go there and spend 15 minutes a day there. I don't care if you just enter the sauna and don't do anything else; just go in for 15 minutes a day, for 1 week. Every day. 15 minutes. Just walk inside those doors, spend 15 minutes there, then leave. No excuse, since you don't have to do anything else but walk in there, even if you have the flu you can go.
Following week, 20 minutes (and maybe add some exercise, or some extra exercise). Following week... still 20 minutes, but write down what you do (the app "Strong" is amazing). Then move it to 25 minutes and try to do 1-5% better than the previous week in terms of exercise/weights etc. Just tiny amounts or progress.
You get the idea behind the "program". It does work. Maybe report your progress here for accountability :)
How old are you if you don’t mind me asking? Your routine and discipline seems impressive.

You are still at a viable age. ;)

I am now spending more time now in my life dedicated exercising than in the past (6 hours per week now vs 2:15) with arguably less visible benefit. Before, a 45 minute, 5 mile run, 3 times a week was all I needed to keep the fat off. I admit, that I need to work harder on my diet discipline. It very easy to wipe out a 500 calorie workout with just a single desert. :(

It’s easier said than done, but my advice is this, If you want to lose the weight, you have to start losing the weight in the kitchen, that’s how it works. You have to use [moderation and healthy ingredients], and you have to teach yourself to learn how to cook to make your food taste good through seasoning. Eat 5/6 smaller meals per day. Drink copious amounts of water throughout your day (74 ounces at least] and make it a habit to at least exercise five times a week with light cardio through jogging/walking, ect.

Something else I would recommend if you don’t have one, is consider a fitness tracking device, that way will help you to track/manage your goals, calories burned, miles walked, etc. It should also help motivate you when you start seeing that you’re progressing through your workouts.

But the biggest thing that will help you through this whole thing is _consistency_, if you don’t stay consistent with the things I mentioned above, then you won’t lose the weight.

While we can all agree that eating fast food all the time is bad for your health, the movie Supersize me is not a "documentary" in the way most people think of what that means. There's no way his weight gain came 100% from eating McDonald's three times a day. I wouldn't trust Morgan Spurlock as far as I could throw him. There's a movie called "Fat Head" that throws a lot of doubt on Supersize Me.

Unsolicited advice for those that want to lose weight: cut way back on carbs, there's no need for them unless you are training for large muscle gains over all other goals. Perhaps give the ketogenic diet/lifestyle a chance. Instead of having 5 - 6 small meals a day, have two larger ones, or just eat within an 8-hour window each 24 hours, also known as "intermittent fasting." Losing weight is so much easier if you are not flooding your body with insulin every few hours by eating carbs five or six times every day.
