Actually, if you pay the $175 ETF on an old line, it's $25 cheaper (not to mention the tax on the phone and the fact that the ETF will be prorated.)

Just called AT&T and my ETF is currently at $125. Should be $120 when iPhone 4 comes out.

Family Plan, this is what I pay up front for a new line. Correct me if I am missing something. (taxes included approximately)

iPhone $215
Activation $36
ETF for current line $125

That is about $376. What I am paying for is basically for a new number.

OR I can pay $599/699 (if pricing structure does not change) for unsubsidized.

Wondering if since unsubsidized pricing isn't available on iDay, will I be forced to pay early upgrade pricing. In that case, I'll just go early upgrade, hopefully. :p

true, but you get to keep your number - to me that will is a big deal (of course it seems not relevant to the current conversation) and it is certainly easier than having to add a line and cancel the old.

Although, in the end you still have to pay for new line activation (which is I think is $36 for the new line v. $18 for the upgrade of the old - making the early upgrade only $7 dollars cheaper)

If you have the option to pay the early upgrade I'd do that. $23 to keep your number, worth it in my opinion.

If he adds a line, he can have his old number assigned to the new contract and just cancel the old line with the lower ETF. Still keeps his #.

Can you elaborate on this? Lets say I already activated the new line. At this point, can I cancel the old line and ask AT&T to change the old number line to the existing new line?

I am in the same boat as the OP but I decided to not give up yet because I am trying to reach someone in the executive customer service dept. and then maybe corporate. Not in a rush to get a phone but I would like to have the option to upgrade.

I'm with you on that. I don't even say this is one of those if worst-comes-to-worst situations. Either way, I do not see myself paying more than 450 for a phone. I just have to deal with a new number with my other option.

Unsubsidized pricing will be available on the day the phone is released. I said this in another thread. If you have a contract with AT&T you cannbuy any phone you want for full price if you don't qualify for an upgrade or early upgrade. Without a contract, I believe Apple and AT&T will remain the way they have in the past and not allow non-contract buyers to get the new iPhone without a contract, even at full price.

Well, if that's the case, then either hope for an early upgrade or new line!

$200 is expensive enough for a phone...Why pay $499-$599 for a phone? Unless someone has the money to "blow" :)
I am not going to lie but I addicted to my iPhone though !!
Here is a number I was given by an online rep: 425-288-2849. It is a direct line for an executive customer service rep, I called and left a message. Her name is Mrs. Tarantino. I will post if I get lucky lol

That would be nice, I'm sure. But even if you have to pay full price, if it's a phone you want or need full price may not be bad. The ups of paying full price are that there's no extension to your contract and you own the phone. So you can do whatever it is you want.

And a lot of people wonder why AT&T and Apple offer unsubsidized pricing to current customers who don't have an upgrade and not to people who don't have a contract. The answer is simple. 1. They want to prevent unlocking of the phone. So they think that if you have a contract with them, it's safe to sell you the phone, rather than someone who does nit have a contract. And 2. If you currently have a contract, even if you pay unsubsidized AT&T will activate the phone in store for you. I was told on 3GS launch day that through an internal memo they were not permitted to let you leave without having the phone activated. The validity of this claim, I am unsure of. But with a contract they will activate your phone for you, full price or not. On the other hand, without a contract, if you just wanna pay full price, how would they activate the phone for you? This makes it much easier to either unlock the phone or sell the phone. That's why the stray away from selling the iPhone to non-AT&T users.

How do you know the iPhone will be available at the unsubsidized price at launch? That's never happened before. Source?

Where are you getting your information that it's never happened before? I was not eligible for an upgrade when the 3GS became available (regular or early) and I purchased my 3GS from an AT&T store for 699. With tax and all it came to 752.45. I have the original receipt of that order in my email (as it was a pre-order), if you'd like to see. Also have the hardcopy receipt I don't know what AT&T or Apple store you went to, but it has always been available unsubsidized. However, if you read my posts fully you would know it's only available unsubsidized if you currently HAVE an AT&T contract. If past launches techniques are followed, you will not be able to buy the iPhone unsubsidized without having a current contract. But again, I'm sorry if you have an AT&T contract and were denied an iPhone because you weren't due for an upgrade, but I have never heard of that happening, again, as long as you are an AT&T customer.

Also, after doing a quick google search, here's proof for the 3G:

https://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/07/02/unsubsidized-iphone-3g-still-locked/

And:

http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal_tech/iphone/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=208700177

And again, as I said, I have receipt proof that I bought my 3GS for the 699 price from AT&T, so there, I have sources. Again, I can't say this enough: you must have an AT&T contract to buy the phone unsubsidized, you can not just buy it from AT&T or Apple for the unsubsidized price WITHOUT a contract, as they will need to activate your phone IN store. A month or two ago, Apple started selling 3GS' unsubsidized without contract. The same with the 3G. I believe in March '09 they started selling 3G's with no contract, unsubsidized. But at the beginning, it has always been 199/299 with upgrade or new customers. 399/499 for early upgrade customers. 599/699 to AT&T customers with no upgrade available.

Well all I hope is that my local apple store policy doesn't change, which allows authorized users to add a line.

Thanks for this thread! Very insightful.

I plan on adding another line to get a $200 iPhone, have my old number assigned to the new line, and cancelling my old dumbphone.

I checked with people who had done this before, you can have your old number put on the new phone (you just have to ask for it).

Do you ask for that at the time you open the new line or after? I plan on canceling my contract after I make the new line, not all at once.

I thought ATT allowed all current iphone contracts to be renewed an additional 2 years when new hardware comes out regardless, at a partially subsidized price (399/499) i thought this is how the 3gs was last year? So even if you had just bought a 3G say 5 months before the 3GS was out, you were able to renew and get it for the partially subsidized price?

Nope, this was only the case w/ the 3G as original iPhone owners purchased their phones sans subsidy.
