I don't understand how you can not be qualified for an early upgrade. I believe when I bought my 3GS in August I was immediately qualified for an early upgrade.

My current eligibility does not let me have anything, I get to get an early upgrade according to AT&T status.

I'm thinking this. If they won't allow unsubsidized pricing on iDay, will I just get the early upgrade option since I can't qualify for the full upgrade price? Because there's no other option available. Hmm.

You will more than likely get the upgrade option which we're assuming would be about $400 and you reup on your 2 year contract.

Man, I hope so. Or I could take an upgrade from one of my other lines in the plan. But, more than likely, I'll just open new line

I would go with either early upgrade or even use another line to upgrade. Adding a new line is not worth it IMO.

I save some money, but it's keeping the number that's the most important. Really depends on my eligibility options after WWDC and when the preorders on Apple begin because that's when I see how much I will have to pay.

My 3GS was delivered the day of release and this is what my account reads:

"You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing. Additional discounts may be available on 11/20/2010"

I've been a customer since 2004. I've also never been late on a bill.

Exactly!

I hope when the iPhone 4 is announced, maybe we can get a better picture of the purchase eligibility requirements. Things can definitely change.

Same here...I guess we are last in the upgradable list lol
I do hope that, just like last year, ATT will announce they will move all the people who are 6 months out ...

Never understood why they did 2 year contracts on a phone thats upgraded every year. They always do something for people in contract so I'd just wait before getting upset.

Because users in 2 year contracts look better on the books.

It used to be one year contracts, but I guess they want to make sure they can get our business for 2 years instead of one.

can someone explain to me how I do not qualify for anything right now (got the 3GS on launch day at early upgrade price), my upgrade date is 11/2010 (not even early upgrade at this point) yet my Mom got the subsidized 3G a couple months ago and she is already eligible for early upgrade?

I'm really missing the point of the entire thread I guess. In every case from original iPhone->3G->3GS I've simply sold my current device on eBay and captured over 90% of the unsubsidized price of the next gen phone.

There is and will remain a huge overseas market for used iPhones. I anticipate no problems in selling my 3GS 16G for enough to get the low end 4G as soon as it's available.

They did this last year for 3GS buyers? Was it announced or did you have to goto a store and talk to a rep about it? Hopefully that happens this year.

Yeah they did this last year. I was one of the people that received an early upgrade when I wasn't supposed to. From what I remember, not everyone got it.

I actually was qualified for an upgrade last year but a couple of days before the release of the 3GS, this ATT rep. Named Seth has come up on facebook and YouTube to announce it, you can actually go check out th video..

say you have an ATT dumbphone and buy the iphone unsubsidized dont you have to sign a contract to switch to an ATT iphone plan? I remember it being like that with the 1st gen.

Nahh, the data plan will get added automatically, but since you got it unsubsidized, there is no contract extension whatsoever.

Early upgrade possible via family plan?

I have 3Gs but do not qualify til Feb 2011
My son is eligible to upgrade his line now
Presently he has a Sony phone.
Could I upgrade to iPhone 4 under his account for MY number and give him my 3Gs and add a data plan for him?
