Actually, it's a huge deal, especially if it controls your driving displays.

I've seen CarPlay freeze quite a few times. You notice the map hasn't advanced for a while because the connection is completely iced. The only way to reset it is to dig into the phone settings and reconnect, an operation you should definitely not be trying while driving. This is merely a pain if you need nav instructions, but dangerous if it impacts your driving displays or if you attempt to fiddle with your phone to fix it.

No carmaker will want to turn over control of their driving displays to a system that could bug out at any time. Apple would not want any part of such a thing either.
I have never had it lock up my screen, it has crashed though and when it crashes it is immediately at the default screen for the display.

While agree it is not a good thing to deal with while driving, if it does not hinder or stop you from operating your vehicle safely you can pull over and fix it, there is literally no good reason why you would need to fiddle with it while driving.

any changes to the old carplay versions?

When will they allow us to play media (when parked) ?
And their awful tight grip on what apps they allow in carplay really devalues the whole system
What do you think is missing for apps? The ones that work for me make sense, navigation and apps for listening to audio content like radio station apps, audio books, music etc. Not sure what other app I would need to work on a display in my car while moving.

I don't see anything in this article which would show "Google [and Amazon are] way ahead on this" [infiltrating other car brands].
Volvo has integrated Google in their infotainment system few years back, just like Apple wants to do now. Default map in Volvo cars is Google Maps. (Instead of Volvo’s own like before)

Verdict has been made by Euro Ncap that large screens in car cabins has increased risk for distractions. Which I do agree. Now a days even climate controls are touch based. Tesla has done extreme changes with blinkers! In my five year old BMW I do like the knobs. As my car is not a performance vehicle, knowing oil pressure or volume of air intake etc are irrelevant.

This is one I've never seen. Mine just goes completely unresponsive from time to time. I suspect this depends on the car and the OS it is running underlying CarPlay. So it could be blamed on the carmaker, for whatever good that does for a driver. And either way not good enough for taking over driving displays. The other issue I see quite a bit is the amount of time it takes to establish the connection. Sometimes it's almost immediate. Other times, I can drive a block before the CarPlay UI appears. Again, not good enough.

Nothing I've used yet has been easier to use and more reliable than a dashboard phone holder where I put my iPhone, with everything else being screen-less.

That's about the ONLY touchscreen I'd want in my car.

Every single other touchscreen I've used has that Windows touch-screen response and feel, which I abhor.

And I REALLY don't want ANY vehicle controls to be capacitive.

Sadly, I'm raging against a machine I can't beat.

But carmakers have lost their way. Nothing beats the satisfying clicks of switches and detented knobs.

In my current vehicle which is a Toyota, does not lock up during CarPlay. It does have a problem with connecting in the beginning. Some times it works fantastic and some times it’s hard to get it to connect. But this is not an apple problem I think. It’s the vehicle that is doing it.

I wish Tesla would stop being so stubborn and adopt CarPlay but Elon has still an axe to grind with Apple because they wouldn’t let him become CEO. I wonder what Apple would have been like with Elon as CEO.
Elon Musk becoming Apple's CEO is nightmare fuel.

There's no need to wonder what it'd be like if he did, we damn well already have real-world experience with that.

One amazing thing that you have in your car is something that many people have not discovered yet. In settings you can set the map display in the driver screen to change from Google Maps to Apple Maps. One of the few cars that can do that.
I am thinking about getting a 2025 navigator. Lincoln has not announced anything about it yet, but the internet doesn’t wait. The spy shots are already out there. It’s going to have the same scene system that you have but just bigger because the navigation is so much wider.
Hope you’re enjoying your new car!!
Almost! Actually, there is not a setting that controls this. Google Maps always shows in the upper screen UNLESS you are using CarPlay AND you have asked Apple Maps to navigate you somewhere. In that situation, Apple Maps takes over the upper map screen. When you end navigation, Google Maps returns to the upper screen. If you are running Apple Maps, but not actively using it for navigation, Apple Maps will only show in the lower screen. So you have a Google Map up top and an Apple Map below.

Whether you are using Apple or Google Maps, you can get 2 different views of the map on the upper and lower displays. Like an overview map down below while a detailed map is above.

It takes some getting used to, but once I got the hang of it, I like how it works.

Will Apple allow car manufacturers to download customer usage data for resell?

Car manufacturers make terrible navigation software. I don’t use the route guidance in my 2022 Audi’s instrument cluster or heads up display, but CarPlay should make it possible.

If only to have user’s choice of Google Maps/Waze/Apple Maps route guidance in my instrument cluster and/or heads up display I welcome all new CarPlay iterations. This is a massive game changer for safety/user experience. Unfortunately I’m afraid the new 2024 Audi I’ve ordered won’t have the upgrade. Uptake by automakers needs to be faster.

mainly highway info. there is a local app here in the EU that alerts you of traffic hazards etc. always having it running on the phone but a carplay app would be great. they said apple won't approve their carplay submission.

But I would also like VLC player or YouTube to listen to my playlists and to watch things when I am waiting somewhere while parked.
Screen-mirroring in landscape mode would also be cool.
There is so much that could be done with. But no

the fact that apple decides if an app is allowed to have a carplay app is just absurd.

Apple really are late to the game on this as an increasing number of car manufacturer including Porsche, Audi, Polestar, Volvo, Chevrolet, Honda, Nissan and Renault are using Android Automotive as their in car interface. Android Autmotive is a lot like new CarPlay (not to be confused with Android Auto which is more like current CarPlay). If only Apple had spent less time trying to develop their own car and got new CarPlay out sooner.

Touch screens in a car are dangerous for a driver to use when driving. Should be banned when car in motion.
I prefer keeping my eyes on the road & not looking at daft widgets on an unresponsive touchscreen which will only get me annoyed as I ‘fanny’ around in menu screens trying to set up an album to listen to. I find car play awful as it always tries to play music which is not downloaded on my device (ie rental car in foreign country). Just give me dials / buttons that I can reach without looking at them.

Highway info is there in navigation apps if they support. Here in Canada I use Waze and I am warned of everything from train tracks, slow moving traffic, dead animals in the road, red light cameras, police, and so on. Waze is not the only one that offers this either.

I can easily see why Apple does not have video streaming through a cars display. I would imagine there is a small number of people who spend enough time in their car while parked that really want to be able to watch something on a little bit bigger screen then their phone.

My new 2024 Lincoln Nautilus has most of the things described in this article. It is all powered by Google. And that doesn't mean Android Auto running from my phone. The car itself has an Android-powered interface in a lower control screen and the 48" wide panoramic display screen across the dashboard. Google Maps is embedded on the top screen along with 3 widgets (Media, Clock, Weather, Fuel Efficiency, Tire Pressure, Trip Odometer, etc.) at a time and also the core driving-related elements directly in front of the driver. It also allows you to use CarPlay (or Andoid Auto), if you desire. I use CarPlay for Music (projecting the graphics up to the media widget) and Messages, Calendar, Podcasts, etc. I leave the CarPlay Apps screen on my lower screen full time. I can say "Hey Google, raise the temperature in the car". I haven't bothered to see what else I can command Google to do yet. But, I love how this all looks and works so far.

If Apple can get some of these manufacturers to do what Google has done for Lincoln, then it will be a good thing, I think. But Google seems to have a jump on them in doing so.

I can install apps to the car using the Google Play store. Waze, for example, would run from the car's installation. Not installed on my phone.
I am not a Google user, and I never want to be one. I won’t get a google account. I won’t be “logging in” to my car with google. I refuse to be data-collected by google.

I guess a 2024 Lincoln Nautilus has a poison pill built in to make me never consider that car?

Looking at the Kia Sportage, the sales rep seemed to hint that their large, curved screen would support the new CarPlay in the 2025 models. Fingers crossed!

Still for the life of me don't understand why weather radar maps aren't included on CarPlay -- either on a separate app or through Apple Maps.

Seems it would be nice to know if I'm driving toward a thunderstorm or tornado...

Cannot wait for Tesla & Rivian fanboys to start feeling the pain: Many have hard time understanding the limitations of Tesla & Rivian systems compared to (current) CarPlay.

(Still fingers crossed that Rivian would change their mind and finally provide CarPlay that blocks from purchasing from them)
