Apple painted themselves into a design corner with the Pencil 2. It was obvious when the 10th-gen iPad came out that Apple would need to redesign the “pro” pencil to accommodate a landscape camera.
The bigger question is why it took Apple so long to move the camera orientation to landscape. Honestly it should always have been landscape on the iPad Pros. At least the 12.9” model.

So I have to get the new pro pencil, dang it. I hope it goes on sale somewhere.

Wow, this is beyond stupid. Can you make this any more confusing Apple?

Luckily I never used the pencil anyway, so I'm definitely not going to buy it this time.

I believe that some of the commentators on this forum are exaggerating the issue. It's like going to a tire shop and complaining about the total number of tires available rather than reviewing the tires that fit your vehicle. People don't consider the entire lineup of iPads from the entry-level to a fully loaded iPad Pro. Regular users decide which iPad they want based on their budget and purpose. Afterward, if they'd like to purchase a pencil or keyboard, they purchase the one compatible with their device. Unlike Macrumors forum posters, they don't navel-gaze and compare the entire lineup and compatibility charts.
Ok- imagine the next Mac Pro comes out and it only works with the newest Magic Mouse, no other mouse.
If you are affluent, as you sound, you won't care. But others who are struggling to afford their new Mac Pro will be pissed, especially if they bought a Magic Mouse last year that they assumed would stay useable for at least a few more years.

Now, of course, you will say something like "if you are struggling, don't buy a Mac Pro", which might have some truth since a Mac Pro is super expensive, but not really the case for an iPad.

Hmmm…the lack of Pencil 2 support has just added another £129 to my new Air purchase. Suddenly hanging on to my Air 4 for a bit longer seems more attractive.
Exactly, cancelled my preorder and sticking with my Air 4 for now. Maybe when my pencil craps out at some point I will consider the upgrade.

I think everyone here needs to consider the wealth gap, there are people here defending Apple who clearly don't have to worry about money. And there are people here who are complaining about Apple who clearly do have money concerns.

I think the rich ones need to chill out, awesome for you that you can buy a new pencil each year.

It’s not always about a wealth gap… some of the wealthiest people are the ones that don't actually buy much. Who would look at it and think… thats not a reasonable price for what I'm getting out of it, or that what they already have does the same. Or that they don't truly need it.

Always good to be good with money, whether you're poor, average, or rich. 😀

The alternative is not having a landscape camera. I’d rather have that feature and need to buy a new pencil. The Pencil 2 was around for 5 years. If the Pencil Pro has a similar life then that works for me.

Plus the new iPad won't do anything differently that your current iPad already does.
I’m interested in the new big one, plus the base model is twice the storage of my current iPad (64gb, and full). I run a ton of music apps as well, so the extra screen, RAM and performance is a bonus, but not being able to use my Pencil 2 has put a bit of a downer on things.

Maybe it’s just the charging that’s not supported, and if I keeps the Air 4 I can still charge it on that… (thinking a bit more on this, probably not as it needs the connection to ‘pair’ with the device)

Honestly, perfect timing for me at least. I’ve had my Apple Pencil 2nd Gen since day 1 in 2018 since my iPad Pro 12.9” 3rd Gen, so it’s going on 6 years and the battery is quite degraded by now and doesn’t last very long.

Still rocking a 12.9" IPP from 2018 as well. I have the 1TB, so upgrading to similar storage gets pricey. 90% of what I use this for is as a digital notebook. The rest of the time it's a Podcast editor, and I relax with Logic Pro - both of which eat up the storage.

I hate that the accessories don't work. I have 3x Apple Pencil 2s (one for each iPad and one that lives in my travel bag). It's such as shame that these will be redundant if I upgraded the iPad.

Agree. It's not about the money - I can easily afford this but I find it hard to spend this much on something with very little in the way of additional functionality over my current device.

Poor trade-in values, and low resale for a 2018 device make this an even more expensive prospect than it needs to be. Throw-in the fact that the pencil and keyboard accessories won't work with the new iPads and, well, I'm back to thinking even though I can afford it, what benefit will I get for the outlay?

You can still get a battery replacement from Apple on that ipad Pro from 2018

A steal if you ask me, if you have all those accessories and can get 3 or 4 more years by replacing the battery.

😀

I am now seriously considering to get battery in my ipad Air 4 replaced at Apple. The Air 6 is nice…. But the value proposition is to use my Air 4 longer… it does everything i need.

I think that's got to be the way to go.

Anyway to check the battery health on these things? I use it a lot at my desk and plugged in, so it's only occasionally run off the battery and seems to last a while depending on what I do. It will still easily last a transatlantic flight for watching videos so may be I'll just leave it.

It wouldn't be that bad if the ipad lineup wasn't already confusing. When I bought a Pro last year, I couldn't figure out what I wanted between the Pro, Air, regular ipad, and last gen Air. None of it makes any sense. Just sell two models with different storage configurations.

Ugh...I'm planning on finally upgrading from my 2018 11" iPad Pro to the 13" M2 iPad Air, but my Apple Pencil 2 won't work with the newer iPad and I'll need to also get an Apple Pencil Pro? So my $800 new iPad just became a $930 iPad?

Not cool.
That's me exactly. Just another example, IMHO, of Apple gouging their loyal customers.

I was excited about the new Air too as an upgrade from the 2018 Pro. But the pencil situation and the lack of a high refresh rate display has dampened my enthusiasm considerably. I'm going to hold off for now.

It’s very confusing and anti-Steve jobs with this model line. Simplicity was the core and this is like a bowl of spaghetti noodles. Please, get rid of Tim Cook before it gets any worse. Software plagued with issues, AVP debacle, countless other instances, and now this. Really, enough is enough.

Regular consumers get the regular Pencil. As simple as that.
There isn't a "regular" Apple Pencil though.
You’re right, best to only sell the latest two and forget the legacy devices! We can’t handle having to actually figure out what iPad we have!
I'm sure you can handle it. I'm sure my mom couldn't. It is confusing.
