They kind of fixed the ipad lineup… but did the opposite with the pencil lineup.

A regular consumer going to buy Apple Pencil is just going to think what the….

They should have a regular and a Pro… and stop.
Essentially that's what they have. The Apple Pencil USB-C is the "regular" pencil, and the Apple Pencil Pro is the pro. The Apple Pencil 1 and 2 are mostly to support older devices no longer for sale.

It’s very confusing and anti-Steve jobs with this model line. Simplicity was the core and this is like a bowl of spaghetti noodles. Please, get rid of Tim Cook before it gets any worse. Software plagued with issues, AVP debacle, countless other instances, and now this. Really, enough is enough.
They ARE simplifying the pencil lineup. The Pencil 1 and 2 are only still for sale because older iPads used them. They couldn't change the iPad camera to landscape using the Pencil 2's design. That's why there is the Apple Pencil Pro and why it works with both the new iPad Air and Pro.

It wouldn't be that bad if the ipad lineup wasn't already confusing. When I bought a Pro last year, I couldn't figure out what I wanted between the Pro, Air, regular ipad, and last gen Air. None of it makes any sense. Just sell two models with different storage configurations.
Many people don't realize how many different types of iPad users there are. Each user category has a budget and a specific use case, meaning they only consider part of the product range when deciding to buy an iPad.

If you are a museum searching for a device for your iPad kiosk for a custom iPadOS app, then the previous 9th generation iPad, with its extensive ecosystem of charging stands, is the best choice. On the other hand, if you are a price-conscious parent looking for a tablet for your child's extracurricular activities and overall content consumption, then the 10th-generation iPad fits your requirements. For an architecture student needing a device for coursework, the iPad Air with a student discount would be the best option. Lastly, an iPad Pro can offer you a powerful tool for your business if you are a professional artist or mobile professional, like a real estate agent or medical office. There may be some overlap between users, but it is unlikely that each potential buyer would analyze every iPad on sale.

I don't understand why some people complain that the iPad lineup is complicated. Apple has a wide range of online and offline retail resources that can help consumers find the right product that suits their needs. Ultimately, having more options available can be beneficial for the product category.

You guys don’t get it. You’re supposed to lose your Apple Pencil 2 and eventually buy the Apple Pencil pro. That’s why there wasn’t find my on Apple Pencil 2.

Competent Apple users would’ve lost their pencils already and would just now be ready to buy the new Apple Pencil pro

Ugh...I'm planning on finally upgrading from my 2018 11" iPad Pro to the 13" M2 iPad Air, but my Apple Pencil 2 won't work with the newer iPad and I'll need to also get an Apple Pencil Pro? So my $800 new iPad just became a $930 iPad?

Not cool.
Update...I ordered a refurb M1 12.9" Pro from the Apple Store app. The only real advantages the new 13" Air had were the faster processor (M2 vs. M1) and the lighter weight (1.36 lbs. vs. 1.5 lbs.), and arguably the landscape camera (but I rarely FaceTime using my iPad, so no biggie for me). Otherwise, the M1 Pro is overall a superior device with a better display, Face ID, better speakers, and compatibility with my existing Apple Pencil 2. And it was $40 cheaper, still comes with a 1-year Apple warranty, and didn't require me to drop another $129 on a new Pencil.

Might be worth looking into for anyone else in a similar boat looking to upgrade.

Man this article or another dedicated article really should explain why the new iPads are not compatible with Pencil 2 and why Pencil Pro is not compatible with older iPads. I think it‘s pretty clear from the announcement video but looks like most these people didn’t watched it.
Also although it seems obvious to me, it would have been nice if this article explained that not everyone is jumping on these new iPads, people still have older iPads, so that‘s why it would be bad for Apple to stop selling the older Pencil 1 and 2 now, but they will stop in due time so that there will only be a high end and low end Pencil and people can rest easy.

Disappointing to see that Pencil 2 will not work with the latest M4 iPad Pro.

This is annoying and confusing

was going to upgrade my wife’s 11 inch iPad Pro 2018 to m2 air but if her Apple Pencil 2 doesn’t work then there goes that idea. Stupidity

Who remembers when Steve Jobs came back to Apple and said even he was confused by the defragmented product line then made the 2x2 table?

Oh the tragedy of figuring out what Apple Pencil to buy.
Sooo much confusion, drama and tragedy!
But it’s Simple:
• Bring your iPad yo the Apple Store and ask a Genius to sell you the right Pencil.
Or
• Go online, select and Apple Pencil then expand Compatibilty.
If you don’t know what iPad you have, go to Settings->General->About.

How hard is that?
Why the drama?🎻
