On come on. It's always user error*!

*unless it's an issue with a non-apple product. Then it's down to shoddy build quality and poor materials.

On this occasion it can't actually be anything but user error though :p

Even if there's a design flaw here, you still have to exert enough pressure on it to make it bend. I try to bend the phone in my hands and it doesn't budge, so it needs a fair amount of pressure.

If you wear skinny jeans and the phone is constantly being twisted, pushed and pulled in your pocket, then that's clearly a problem.

Aluminum isn't the cheapest metal but its buy no means a precious metal. The same could be said about the plastics used with certain android phones.

Apple and Samsung are businesses trying to sell the most buy spending the least. It's all about the end product and how the consumer perceives it.

I feel my iPhone 4S FEELS like a high quality product. I feel the same way about my Xoom and Nexus 10. All of which were made is some crappy factory under terrible working conditions. Also they are were absolutely pristine out of the box.

I totally agree.

But anyway, I'm kinda happy now that I've stuck with my iPhone 4 as that is about the toughest phone I've ever owned.

IMO, seeing how we have not received a significant number of complaints for previous generation of iPhones, then It clearly appears to be a build issue with the iPhone 5

i dont view any smartphone as tough, if I dropped any (No matter the manufacturer) from waist height I would fear the worse, I also would not put any phone in a front tight pocket because they just aren't manufactured to withstand bending, poking or dropping.

Duh!! onthecouchagain!! It's a feature, don't you know anything? Whilst in your pocket, the iPhone 5 bends and molds to the natural contours of your leg for greater ergonomics and comfort for the user.
;)

Once again, Apple beats the competition to the market. They are first to do bendable displays! Eat it, Samsung.

----------

My iPhone 4S is still the most beautiful iPhone or smartphone.

The ergonomics of the iPhone 4S stunk, but aesthetically speaking, 100% agree. Particularly, the white one.

Yeah, but a phone should be able to withstand that kind of pressure. I don't know if the iPhone 5 does or does not bend from those kinds of pressure, but a phone certainly shouldn't bend just because you are wearing skinny jeans. Putting your phone in the back pocket, on the other hand, is just silly.

Unless it's a Nokia 3310. Then you should fear the floor doesn't break.;)

Aluminum isn't a cheap metal. Aluminum is quite expensive compared to steel.

Many car makers use aluminum in place of steel to reduce weight, but the cost goes up.

In February 2011.

Aluminium per ton is $2507.33.
Steel per ton is $532.50.

You are just comparing to something even less expensive. How much is a ton of hay?

Aluminum is still a relatively inexpensive material. Like you mention car manufactures use it to reduce weight. My Subaru has an aluminum hood and roof....not exactly a Ferrari.

If you made a graph you'd find aluminum toward the bottom. Ton of gold is 50,000,000+ dollars.

Btw I'm not saying plastic is better, just that aluminum isn't a precious metal or anything.

According to ifixit the back of the iPhone 5 weighs in a little over half the weight of a single soda can (which is food grade aluminum btw).

Aluminum comes different alloys at different price points. Certain refined aluminium alloys are very inexpensive and get used in tons of products like pop cans. Some alloys have expensive metals in them for strength so they are used in cars and vehicles. I wonder which one is used in the iPhone...

Apple uses cheap aluminum. They don't use a fancy strong alloy. Aluminum 6061 is what they use and its the most common and one of the cheapest aluminum types. More common than plastic. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon) in the Earth's crust.

I think it depends how skinny the jeans are / how fat the person is. You can't possibly know what kind of strain is being put on the phone, so it's not possible to say that it should withstand those kinds of pressures.

Given that this news hasn't spread like wildfire, I'm guessing that not everyone who wears tight jeans has this problem... probably just the tubbies :p (or people with defective phones)

Oh I am well aware of what they use, that last comment about "wondering" was more for the guy I was quoting.

Hay isn't a metal. We are talking about metal and material use to make smartphones. What does it have to do with Hay?

Aluminum cost a lot more than steel or plastic.

Your Subaru has aluminum hood and roof? Damn, you are going to die when the roof starts to bend.

It's not made cheap. People are just inept.

Ineptitude will undo even something as slick as an iPhone.

Some people should not have nice things.

Image

Bad example. The body plastics on that is the same quality as a Ford Focus. It's the Engine, design, and etc: that make the cost. But I understand and agree with your point.

When you're talking on scale of a mobile phone the cost difference comparatively small.

Anyone that puts any mobile phone in the front or rear pockets of tight fitting jeans is asking for trouble, I'm surprised that people can't see this, how hard is it to work out that if one exerts pressure from the weight of a body on a phone it will eventually break.
