I did not want to say that but I am holding on to my quad 2.8 for a while. if you look at the color of the oem heat-sink paste and the arctic silver paste in the above photos it looks like the same color and who is to say what paste was used at the factory.


Thanks for the info! I'm definitely ordering the W3690. I'll more than likely hang onto the original CPU in case I need to warranty the machine, at least till the warranty is up.

Oh, and the geniuses at the genius bar are not always real geniuses. I've had my fair share with some of those guys only to prove them wrong.
 
To be honest, if I did this to a MP and had to get warranty service I'd simply swap the original CPUs back in. There's always those Genius Bar idiots who try to deny everything and anything...

Yes but that kind of behaviour usually only applies for the so called "Geniuses" in the regular Apple stores.
Personally, I always chose a non Apple store to get my stuff repaired and never had any difficulty with third party hardware in my machines. If you can, get your stuff to an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider), much better experience than the Apple Stores IMO.
I actually never heard any of those horror stories that are out there (SSD swap back to stock drive, memory back to stock, without telling the customer yet confessing that it has been done) for the Apple Stores about an AASP.

Third party service providers all the way. I wouldn't even think of talking to one of the "Geniuses" in case of a broken Mac. For iOS devices it's fine. But Mac, no thanks.
 
Great tutorial, thank you for providing such good documentation! Just curious, did you opt for the 3.2 over the 3.3 or the 3.4 purely for cost reasons? I have a 2010 dual 2.4 (octocore) and I have been considering stepping it up to dual 3.4's.

First remember this is a single cpu not a double. While I would love to write that mod up my pockets are not deep enough to do so.

Cost was a big reason. I am getting a huge increase for a 600 dollar cpu. geekbench goes from 9950 to 15269. The 1000 dollar cpu (w3690) gives me maybe 17000 on the geekbench.

Another reason I picked the w3670 is my needs.
I absolutely do not need a cpu this good.
The quad 2.8 was more then fast enough. I got the pro for hdd management more then any other reason.


Sooo why pay 1000 when for 600 I will come close. Less with discounts and sale of the quad 2.8 cpu

Last reason was no one had done a w3670 or a w3690.
There is some info that w3680 works. A few installs have been written up about.



I did not mind being a Guinea pig for this w3670. Since I used a real seller buy.com on ebay I have 30 days to return it and a 2 year warranty on it.


I also knew I could make a nice write up that works for any 2010 quad mac pro the 2.8 or the 3.2


for any intel w3500 quad processor and for any intel w3600 hex processor.

THEY are all the same for a one cpu 2010 mac pro. they all max at 130 watts they all go in and out of the cpu board just like the one I did. Some use 1066 ram some use 1333 ram. The ram is not a big deal in speed difference. As the latency for the 1066 is 7 and for the 1333 it is 9. This kind of makes the ram equal on almost every test.


Even though there are some others that work I left them out due to cost with no speed gain. Some of the W3500 series are costly and should not be put in unless you already have a spare one sitting in a parts drawer.

You definitely got a very nice performance boost for a $600 investment.

Based on my usage, I do utilize multiple processors with my work, however with an upgrade I am more concerned with clock speed than increasing the number of cores available (currently 8 is plenty, it seems 12 would be overkill).

I am no expert, but I think the W3565 could be an interesting option. I did not realize Intel made quad-core xeons with a clock speed of 3.2.

According to a quick check of amazon, a W3565 sells for roughly $340, while a W3690 sells for roughly $1000. Clearly the jump from a quad to a hex core is costly, considering these chips clock speeds only differ by 0.26 GHz.

Please correct me here if I'm at all mistaken.

I KIND of held back on the dual cpus.
I am under the belief that the ones above are what you need for dual cpu upgrades.
 
You are correct, I currently have two E5620s, thank you for clarifying for me. To do what I proposed, dual quads with clock speeds of 3.2, would require two X5672s, and would probably run $3000-$4000, not $680 as I suggested with the W3565s, hahaha...

Upgrades are definitely costly, but could you imagine dropping two X5687s in there? An 8-core made up of two 3.6Ghz processors?! I wonder if that would work?

Yeah there is some tax apples hex is a little faster it will score 16100 my mod scores 15260 on geekbench, but the savings is about 900 for a machine that is 74 % the price with about 95 % of the performance. One reason I did the mod with the w3670 and not the other two hex cores is the value. If you need a machine in the next month or two it is a good deal to buy the refurb on apple online and put the w3670 cpu in it. If you don't need the machine and can wait for the upgrade (how long?) then wait. Most people are guessing months for the upgrade like nov or dec 2011.

This is under no stress just surfing the net and typing this.


I found a good stress test cputest I am pushing the cpu to about 75- 80 watts with it and I needed to boost the fans to keep the cpu under 150f see the attachments first one I used an 8 core setting and never got past 80 watts or 147f . the second test I used a 16 core setting this maxed all cpus at 100% and after 5 to 6 minutes I got to 153f. Since 154F is max for the cpu I stopped the test. It was interesting to see that all cpus fully maxed pulled about 85 watts. This does not mean you can't max the cpu fully at 100% per core you just need higher fan settings then I tested with. I have to say I am impressed that it is only pulling 85 watts when fully maxed. Although there is a second watt figure of 16 something. It may be to figure your full use of watts for the cpu you need to add them which is 102. Still good since the cpu is supposed to pull as much as 130. I am going to reset the fans a little higher and run a few cpu at 100% maxed tests. so look back in an hour or so.


So I set the fans a little faster and watts are 81 plus 16 or 97watts and temps stay around 140. The fans are set fast but maxing out all your cores at 100% Is not normal usage. So far I am more then 14 minutes into the test and 141f was the highest temp I got.

This is the last test in after 50 minutes with fans set as in the last picture the cpu temp is stable at 140f that is 14f under max temp allowed. So if you want to really push your machine you will need the fans set a bit higher. These would be loud settings to a lot of people. But you are well under max fan speed.

I fell pretty safe in saying that;

2050 Rpm for the expansion slots fan

1275 Rpm for the power supply fan

1325 Rpm for the exhaust fan

1625 Rpm for the intake fan

2075 Rpm for the Booster 1 fan



Will keep the Hex core 3.2 GHz machine under 140F in a room temp of 80F under high cpu use, in my last two test cases all 6 cpu cores were 100% all of the time.

As a final note I sold the 2.8 cpu chip on ebay for 182usd. after fees about 160 net.

my total cost was 559 before the ebay


take away the 160 my net cost for the upgrade was 399 usd. Not bad. If any weird problems happen I will dig this post back up and give a report.

Still think its plain stupid to upgrade from the w3680 to the w3690.. not enough percentage of performance gain.

Yeah if you originally grabbed a w3680 and put it in your 2.8 quad or your 3.2 quad for now going to a w3690 makes no sense at all.

But this was a w3530 quad 2.8 basic model so going from it to a w3670 is a nice upgrade. In your case you have the w3680 so a cpu upgrade is not a good idea. you would need ssd's or more ram to boost your machine. maybe cindori's trim for ssd would help boost your machine (if you have a ssd).

The day after I posted this upgrade with all the photos some seller offered one on ebay. I guess he looked at the photos and decided why not? he is asking a lot of coin for his machine if he gets that much he should send me a donation. LOL

It really is a nice upgrade for the money. I am really impressed how much photo loading from my camera to the iphoto library has speed up.

Upgrade Results

Ok, so the results are in. I just completed the install of the W3690 and it's a nice increase from the original processor. I didn't take a screen capture of the Geekbench results beforehand but the 2.8 came in at a at a score of 10020 while the new 3.46 comes in at a score of 16655.

Yeah My build photos came out nice. I use iStat look at the thumb nail I programed the fans settings to have 5 speeds. I purchased the family pack for iStat because I have 3 or 4 computers running on and off all day. I will look for a link to buy iStat.

Thanks! I'll definitely have to check it out. I downloaded another tool called Temperature monitor and tested my temp ranges. At idle the CPU sits around 97-100 degrees (F) and using the CPU Test tool that you used above it maxed out around 129 degrees (F). Not too bad. Seems to be holding up well.

Not much of an increase from what you got out of the 3.2GHz CPU, but I like that I can use my DDR-1333 memory and I get a 6.4GT/s QPI rating. Over all, I'm happy!

Not sure if I want to offload my original 2.8GHz CPU. I may just hang on to it just in case! Maybe I'll use it to build another machine for a file server or something.
