Before you change fan speeds, stress your CPU for a bit and see what CPUA TDiode reports when you are at full load.
Core0 relative to ProcHot is how many degrees your cores are from 100C. It is a countdown, so the higher the number, the better. The number will decrease as you heat up.

When changing the fanspeeds, I've noticed that 1100 rpms for INTAKE & EXHAUST are as high as you can go before you begin to really notice the fan noise. Raising those 2 will automatically raise BOOSTA to more than 1500 rpms. BOOST fan (Cpu fan) reacts to changes in INTAKE/EXHAUST, so I never adjust it manually.

I only ever reset the minimums on iNTAKE and EXHAUST fans. I never touch the others. Never had a need to.
Those higher speeds I mentioned will keep my CPU at 74C (TDiode) under full load.
Without raising them, TDiode is 84C. Not good.

Alright I have to find something to use handbrake for lol so I can check my temps .. right now my cpu is idling at 38-39C .. heatsink at 36C .. room is kind of warm

I am idling at 40C right now.

Try to find the longest movie you've got so as to give things time to really warm up.

I've not used iStat for fan control. How have you put it to use? Is it just a matter of setting 'profiles' for different types of tasks?

I've been using SMC FanControl.

yeah I no longer have the mac pro but look at the settings i did for a mac mini.

some where in the beginning of this thread i posted a lot more detail. I had 4 or 5 settings and mostly ran the slowest fan speeds except for handbrake.

If you don't use HandBrake, Could you try stress-testing the cpu with the 'yes' command? Here is how you do it:

http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/02/stress-test-mac-cpu/

Running that for 20 minutes or so will give it time to warm up. You can stop the test with: killall yes.

I don't use iStat for fan control. Try SMC FanControl. It is free and works well. Just reset the minimums and save as a 'profile'. You can easily return to Apple default speeds by chooseing the 'default' profile.
Again, 1100 rpms on the INTAKE and EXHAUST gives a nice bit of extra cooling without making additional noise.

do you need to purchase it to use it?

also does anyone know how to get your gpu temp to show in istat ? I have a 680gtx .. thanks

Yes, I do believe you must purchase Geekbench to use the stress test.

If your GPU is not Apple official, then I don't think there is anyway to read the temps. I've no idea what my GPU temps are because I installed a Zotac GTX 650 pc card.

you went all out with your mac pro haw? i seen your signature

I guess I did but I had very little money out of pocket with selling my iMac. Performance wise I was fine with my iMac but I wanted a tower. And this should last me another two years

----------

I bought geek bench and ran 64bit and got around 16400. Not bad. I tried the stress test but it doesn't load all cores to 100%. During the geek bench my temps hit high 50s

question for the thread: is the w3670-80-90 max ram memory 24gb? can we go beyond that?

Try the 'yes' command in Terminal (see earlier post for instructions). That will run all cores and threads to near-max.......if you do about 10 lines of 'yes'.

I'd like to know how your 6-core will do temperature-wise under that kind of load.

Cool. Thanks. Let the stress-test go for about 20 minutes to give the CPU time to heat up.

The test can be Ended by typing 'killall yes' in Terminal.

Alright so i can like 13 lines of yes and it maxxed all my cores .. my cpu hit like 81 .. I only ran it for like 5 min because my fans never increased speed .. they all were under 1000rpm .. like 500-800rpm .. wtf ? Also had a game running on a another screen etc

but i have no idea why my fans arent getting any louder or speeding up once it goes under load ?

I know how you feel. The CPU is permitted to get way too hot. I have the same behavior on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Your CPU temp didn't get quite high enough to trigger the fans believe it or not.

The pattern that I have noticed is that the CPU Diode will reach 85C or thereabouts (iStat reports CPU relative to Prochot as 3C---which is like 97C for your cores). Only then will the fans begin to speed up a bit. INTAKE, EXHAUST and BOOST will speed up just enough to stabilize the temp and lower it to about 83C (diode) or 5C from Prochot.

And THAT's it!!! That's all you get for cooling. Apple does not use the fans to their potential. They do only just enough to keep your CPU cores from crossing 100C.

You'll have to use SMC FanControl to keep your temps from flirting with the upper limits. At least on the occasion when you really max your cores.

damn really? I got scared when it hit 82C and the fans were not moving

Interesting thread, I would do the upgrade to W3690 if I would benefit from it, but at 3.33, I simply won't. Looks damn easy though!

If you have the W3680 @ 3.33GHz, then installing a W3690 would certainly not be worth the money.

Unless you can get a 3690 for free.

I suppose that's the downside to owning the 'top-of-the-line' single-Cpu Mac Pro. You are practically 'already there'. So you can't experience the thrill of CPU-swapping unless you REALLY want that 3.46GHz.

Looks like I might finally get off my butt and do this.

I bought a new 2010 Mac Pro 2.8GHz in August last year, and have been meaning to upgrade the processor to a 3.33GHz W3680 ever since.

Was browsing some classified adverts last night and saw a 2010 Mac Pro 2.4GHz dual processor for a good price. Ended up paying $A1,800 cash for it - pleased with that, as I missed out on one on eBay last week that went for $A2,280 (I'm in Perth, Western Australia).

That changes the game a bit. Instead of doing the single processor W3680 upgrade, I will be doing a dual processor upgrade instead. That means a few more options to research.

Questions:
1) RAM - I've only got 12Gb RAM, and would like to replace that with 32Gb. Anyone got links to the current best deals on ECC RAM?

2) Processors - I've been undecided whether to go with the W5590 (3.33GHz, four cores each processor) or the lower GHz X5650 (2.67GHz, six cores per processor). I'm indecisive on whether to pursue higher GHz or more cores. Then I found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321252505532

Best of both worlds - high GHz and six cores per processor. I assume that these will work ok?

W3680 Are at end of life apparently

Looks like the W3670, 80 and 90 processors are getting mighty hard to find new these days. Found several links saying the retail boxes would be unavailable for order after Sept 2013.

I waited too long for a new one, but found a use W3680 on ebay, and the seller was local to boot.

So far so good, only took about 10 minutes to swap, certainly much easier than upgrading the procs on my 2006 Pro.

Just Upgraded

I received a W3680 3.33 Hex core for Christmas. I just did the upgrade to my 2010 MP5,1 2,8 quad core, and I could not be happier. The machine is much more responsive (I have a Velocity X2 with a Samsun 840 Pro installed as the boot drive as well). I work mostly in audio. I just opened a Logic X project with 80 tracks and lots of plug-ins. Logic's CPU meters never went up by more than a third of their range. Temps are right where they were before the upgrade. Bonus: my RAM was running at 1066 but after the upgrade the speed jumped to 1333. Nice! I am glad I did not buy more RAM. This was the first processor swap I have done in a MP, and it was surprisingly easy, as long as you take your time and go slowly. I will admit, I did have a tense few minutes waiting for the startup boing.

Edit: I have to give a big thanks to all the people that are so helpful on this site. Without all the great tutorials and discussions, I don't think I would have attempted this upgrade.

...

Hi,

I recently found this article and now that my Apple warranty is officially over I wanted to upgrade my 2.8GHz Quadcore with a 3.33GHz Sixcore which I found a new and fairly cheap one. However, it appears that one out of the 5 bolts to remove to heat sink seems to be a 3.5mm hex screw rather than 3.0mm. It's the one that is located on the left side if you look on top of the sink:
https://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=277466&d=1300801630

Strange but the 3.0mm hex driver simply does not fit and a 4.0mm is too big.
I had to reassemble my MacPro without being able to replace my CPU...
