W5590 8M Cache, 3.33 GHz

do you think that the W5590 8M Cache, 3.33 GHz will increase a lot the power of my 2 x 2,4 ghz? because i can't find any benchmark to compare and find out the best solution,

I'm a tad stumped myself. I use a 2.4Ghz dual processor Mac Pro, but still have my previous 2.8GHz single processor (that I haven't sold yet).

Then I scored a 3.33Ghz W3680 processor on eBay for $US305, so now I'm undecided on which Mac Pro to sell. Why buy a processor for a Mac that I'm currently trying to sell? Who wouldn't buy a W3680 at that price!

If you're going to stick with a dual processor Mac Pro then the best value option is getting a pair of W5590 (3.33GHz, four core) processors for around $US400 for the pair. Getting a pair of X5680 (3.33GHz, six core) processors is going to cost at least $US1,000.

this is the benchmark that i just dis with the trial version, so no 64 bit but only 32:
so if the 3,33 gives me 18000 it's not that much right?

Just finish the single W3690 upgrade today, everything went well. However, my RAM still running at 1066.

I am using the ADATA non ECC 1600 RAM (I was not intend to buy the RAM that with higher frequency but I cannot use. However, this is the cheapest and easiest 8G stick that I can get from the computer shop, and I know it will automatically lower the frequency to match with the system), technically, it can run at 1333.

Problem fixed. It's because the system cannot run at 1333 with all 4 slots being used. I remove a stick from slot 4, do a SMC and PRAM reset. All the RAM running at 1333MHZ now.

I know the triple channel design of the cMP, using all 4 slots will cause performance degrade. But I really have no idea that will affect the RAM frequency as well. Anyway, problem now solved. 24G of RAM should be enough for me to use. Even though I have 32G RAM, my system only use about 22G most of the time.

So, it is still a mystery why I can't run all 4 slots with 1333MHz. Will try to do more tests and try to find out the real limitation.

There's no mystery. When all slots are populated only UDIMMs will be shown in ASP as 1333. And this is cosmetics. Slots 3 and 4 share one channel, slots 1 and 2 hold two remaining ones (of triple channel controller in CPU). When memory in banks 3 and 4 is accessed, it will downclock itself, because that's a nature of sharing.
Apple's little cheat is that UDIMMs (which thy use) don't show this in ASP. RDIMMs (which they didn't use) do. Non ECC RAM as well.

So, because I use UDIMM non-ECC ram. The system profile shows me the correct picture. And if I use all 4 slots, the shared slots are forced to downclock, and it cause the other 2 good slots also downclock themselves to match with the others.

People are saying how hard it is to find a W3680 processor, especially now that they aren't being made any more.

Why not buy a computer with a W3680? This Dell Precision T3500 Workstation sold on eBay for $420: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380901160574

What am I missing? Why aren't Mac Pro owners buying stuff like that to get the processor out of? Sell the rest of it off piece by piece, and you end up with a very cheap W3680...

I don't think it's hard at all, I can easily get my 2nd hand W3690 with less then $300 on the internet. However, if someone looking for a new one, or must come from a trustable seller. That may be quite hard.

Exactly.

[edit] At the very least, I'd want some assurance that I can return it if it blows up in a month. Nothing is guaranteed forever, but getting money back from a private party on eBay can be difficult at times. It might be a consideration, though.

What is the best test for a processor these days? Would something like Geekbench give you any indication of a processor's health? Or any other recommendations?

Thank you, Mike. I wasn't aware of that. Seems like the perfect tool and if you're buying a used Dell like Phildo suggests, you could run the tool in Windows before pulling the processors from the Dell.

i'm almost done with all my mac pro upgrade, at the end i found the 3,33 ghz and a red rocket is coming soon for the red workflow, i also order 128 giga ram, so i think my mac will fly soon,

the trycky question is...
now that my old cpu ( 2 x 2,66 quadcore xeon ) are no long working,
im i able to put them in my other mac pro wich is a 1,1 dual core 2,66 intel xeon?
if yes, can i put my old ram(5,1 mac pro) in the 1,1 macpro motherboard ?

Nope. 1,1 uses completely different memory type and cpu sockets from the 5,1

I have a mac pro 3,1 that is literally spec'd out. Meaning I can't do anything else to it.

I am thinking of doing the 2010 hex setup. I just want to know where's the best place to buy the CPU's needed, and the MacPro 2010 itself?

Quick post to say that I did the 09 quad upgrade from 2.66 to 3.33. Found the 3.33 quad for 150$ on eBay, and couldn't pass up the deal (since a hex core wouldn't have made much difference for me and wasn't worth the much higher price).

So I got a w3580 and it was a simple switch, no firmware upgrade necessary.

Geekbench (version 2.2.3) for the 2.66 on my system: 8427 (32bit) / 9414 (64bit)
And for the 3.33: 10298 (32 bit) / 11421 (64 bit).

Easy and cheap way to get 20%-25% faster machine.

you upgraded the cpu in your 4,1 to the w3580 without upgrading the 5,1 firmware? Forgive me if I am incorrect, but if you flash the firmware to 5,1 you'd probably be getting faster speeds? right

^ ^ ^ ^It may be marginally faster with the 5,1 firmware. The 4,1 firmware will run the installed RAM at 1066 MHz. The W3580 used will run the installed RAM at 1333 MHz if allowed by the computer. The 5,1 firmware will recognize this and if the installed RAM is recognized as 1333 MHz RAM, it will run at the faster speed.
