Sorry for digging up such an old thread, but I'm having issues with removing the left hand hex screw: It doesn't seem to be a 3mm?! All four others came out without problems. I even bought a new 3mm allen key in case it was just a bit rounded. The screw head looks fine and I haven't removed any of the screws before, so it's not rounded. Could it be an imperial hex head? Seems odd if all others are 3mm metric.

it's a 3mm allen/hex head. be assured you have the right tool! getting the wrench into the bolt head can sometimes be a pain though and perhaps what some of your frustration may be? I used a flashlight to shine in and see the bolts better on the ones that it could help. I want to say that one in the photo is easily seen this way.

This is so weird! I've shone a light across and can clearly see the 3mm hex key freely spinning. All other four screws are absolutely fine. I'm really baffled. I haven't got a long enough 3.5mm key but will try that next.

I finally got the heatsink off and swapped the CPU. The Mac starts but no chime and can't see anything on the screen?

I have an RX580 in there so I can't see a boot screen. I've tried an SMC and PRAM reset without success. The tower seems to be running and no red CPU flash - what's wrong?

^^^^No, an X5687 is a 4 core 3.6MHz CPU and over the years a few folks have tried it in the 5,1 cMP and they will NOT boot up in a Mac!

Yep, the eBay seller either scammed me or didn't check properly what he sent me out. Thanks so much for your help. Can't believe I didn't check it earlier!

If it were me, I'd get an X5690 just in case you decide at some point to go dual, then you'll be half way there. You can get a X5690 for $125 on ebay from a US seller. Those W3690's just seem overpriced compared to the superior X5690.

I am finally going to pull the trigger on a CPU upgrade. X5690's are going for around $82 and W3690's are going for $69.

I only have a single CPU tray. Although the X5690 would allow me to use Dual CPUs I would have to replace the tray which would cost at least $250 from eBay (for a 2012 tray - I am assuming 2012 trays would work). I have a real MacPro5,1.

Also, I don't think I would benefit much from 12 cores anyway.

So with that information in mind I think the W3690 would be fine in my case?

IMO, the main consideration is “are you going to use 64GB RAM?”, but not “will you upgrade to dual processor later?”

X5690 can boot 4x16GB RAM on cMP. W3690 cannot.

W3690 works with 56GB RAM on a single processor board. I know 4 DIMMs run slightly more slowly, but it's not noticeable for most users.

after 4 years i am looking to upgrade my ram from 16gb to more... probably 64gb would be fine - but can my set up take more? Might as well stick as much in as possible, depending on price

I have 1x X5690 6 core in single tray

And i take it i am looking for upto 4 DDR3 1333 modules ?

I have 4x 4gb 1066MHz at the moment which ive had since 2011.

Says here max memory is 288GB - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...0-12m-cache-3-46-ghz-6-40-gt-s-intel-qpi.html

No one ever report if 32GB DIMM can work on single processor cMP yet.

If you want, you may try up to 4x32GB with single X5690. NO guarantee can work, but the possibility is there.

Think i will stick with 64GB - should be enough for several years...

Do i just get 4x 16GB for 64GB ram and wack em in slots 1-4? I've heard 4x16gb is not supported in a single tray (but im using a dual cpu in the single tray so think i ignore this?)

Do i just get these or equivalent (for a dual cpu ram config, max 64gb) https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/1333D3X9M064/#owctabs

Just curious why, after 4 years, you need to move past 16GB? You could double the RAM to 32GB at a very good price. 8GB ECC modules can be had cheaply on ebay.

Have noticed the odd occasion my ram pressure going into the red and everything seems a bit laggy when im rending etc.. Probably need to up my 4GB gpu for that though...
I may get 32gb actually

If i went to 64gb without really needing to, would there be actual issues / slowness or will it be quicker than using 32gb / 16gb?

4x16GB is fine for single X5690. It’s supported.

48GB (3x16GB) is theoretically the sweet spot between cost, speed, capacity.

For a normal user, the actual memory demand is rarely go over 48GB.

3x16GB can provide better pure memory performance than 4x16GB.

And the 16GB DDR3 ECC DIMM is quite cheap now.

But in real world, 4x16GB usually work better than 3x16GB. The OS can use the remaining memory as cache to speed up the system.
