interesting... very interesting

can others running with RX 480s and RX 580s also post About this Mac/System profiler screen shots of their cards?

I think this is the first time an un flashed AMD card has shown up OOB with its proper name and not a generic one...

I wonder what other users are getting? Does the RX 480 show up the same or?

Wow, you have answered a question that was on my mind, thanks.
Which make 580 are you using, how many power connectors does it use and do you get boot screens.

I am wondering also whether this will enable a 5.1 Mac Pro to run a HTC Vive, as that is the recommended spec'd iMac graphics card.

Haven't try with option key for boot screen. Guess no. Power with 6 pin+2.
This Rx580 is from the developer kit (Sapphire card). Though I bought the tb2-3 converter from Apple last night, I just don't want to try with my Mac Mini 2014 with that sonnet eGPU box. I like my cMP...

Why eGPU when I can run it natively in cMP?

Compare to Nvidia 1080 Ti, it still sucks, other than the FCPX. If you want gaming in windows, this is not the one you hope for. Vega, maybe. So stay with Sierra and Nvidia 1080 Ti is still your better option for now. By the time High Sierra publicly available, I think Nvidia Web Driver should be readily available soon (I can't think of any reason why not). This card's frame rate is only 60% of the GTX 1080 ti when playing battlefield one, i.e., I'm no longer able to play it at ultra settings. Also the build quality of the card is too low compare to founder edition GTX1080 Ti.

When idle, the fan is barely audible. But under load (playing BF1), it's louder than the GTX 1080 TI founders edition.

It seems the RX580 will be another 7950. As long as someone willing to upload the ROM to the internet. Then everyone can create their Mac EFI RX580.

Of course I may be totally wrong. However, by consider the case of 7950, 7970, R9 280X, R9 280X. They are all sharing the same Mac EFI from the Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition. The chance too able to create our own RX580 is very high.

are you saying the RX580 from the Apple eGPU kit has a Mac Pro UGA EFI ROM? that would be very nice but id be quite surprised if apple do that... (granted I/we wouldn't complain :) )

interesting you say its the card from Apples eGPU Box?

because for example here https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...cially-announced.2048480/page-5#post-24674023

this guys RX 480 Just shows up with the Generic "AMD R9 xxx" name...

can you grab a picture of what the card shows up as in the PCI section of system profiler?

(I wonder if the RX 580 GPU from Apple has a custom rom?)

There is no PCI reading. I don't know why he has PCI readings, mine not. My PCI info is empty. I have SM951 in slot 4 that's the 10.13 High Sierra boot drive.

Don't know wether or not if this is custom rom. I see from the other guy's youtube review on the developer kit that has same card as mine, his eGPU can't open FCPX in the 10.13 beta with his macbook. But on my cMP native PCIE slot worked.

Like None at all or does it give you an error message when you go to PCI devices?

if it gave you an error then thats normally an indication of an un flashed GPU

which furthers my point about the fact it showed up with a Proper name, being quite odd/interesting...

interestingly looking at this Video his AMD Radeon RX 580 Does show up with the proper name.... Like Prince134 RX580 from his eGPU kit that he has installed in his 5,1. (on a side note i did notice AMD is missing from the name, its just "Radeon RX580" lol)

im pretty sure a normal PC RX580 just shows up with the generic R9 xxx name (I know the RX480 for sure just displays the generic R9 xxx name) but it would be good to test...

Prince134 can you tell us what frame buffer your RX580 is using? :)

Yes, if the RX 580 would be available. F**** damned miners bought up everything....
Yes! I've noticed that everywhere is out of stock or outrageously priced! Hopefully by late July they will be back in stock (probably not). I would love to pick one up for a decent price!

No boot screen obviously. Just working out of the box. Can't see the frame buffer info as no pci reading on in the pci device category.

Interesting, without Mac EFI, the card should only read as R9 xxx, which is defined in kext (by device ID). That RX 580 identification should be coming from the EFI. If boot screen not avail, may be Apple tailor made an EFI ROM for the RX580 which is only for displaying the name properly.

But even though no boot screen. Native support RX580 + NVMe SSD is already a huge improvement to cMP user.

Anyway, even though that's protential a "no extra function" EFI ROM. I still like it. When I using non EFI card, I love to mod the kext to show the GPU name properly. If this kind of EFI ROM exists, which can save me some work. Only mod the ROM once, but no need to mod the kext after every update.

also to get this custom name you also normally need some sort of proper framebuffer in place, if you make say a Radeon 7950 thats been flashed, fall back to the Generic Radeon frame buffer that is used by un flashed cards then you will also get the generic "7xxx" name in this case, even if the card has boot screens...

Prince134 when you say No reading do you mean you get an error when you click on PCI, or does it literally just not show up at all?

It says "There was an error while gathering PCI device information".

The worst case is they will expand and continue to buy graphic cards on a massive scale, as each cards generates $, if there will be no mid-term Ethereum crash. Because of the RX 580/570 lack they are already beginning to buy GTX 1060/1070/1080, leaving no cards for an other ecosystem like Mac users/PC enthusiasts/gamers: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&tl=en&u=https://www.computerbase.de/2017-06/radeon-rx-580-570-mining/

Here an example what I mean:

the plot thickens :) if someone has a regular PC RX580 if they could post what they get that would help :)

DPCIManager or ioreg will also tell you what framebuffer your using

All the different models I have looked at on Amazon, have either one 8 pin, or one 8 pin + one 6 pin.
I was hoping for a single 6 pin, and to leave my ATI 5770 in also.

Maybe AMD will recognize this and ramp up production! I wish :( But its's highly likely of them becoming more available but higher priced like the 7950/280X still retaining a lot of their value even for today.

I was about to purchase a second hand R9 280X, but i've noticed that they've really gone up in price on eBay, from around £70-100, to around £120-150!

wonder if its to do with the recent "euthrium" (or however its spelt) cryptocurrency thing...

when i got my 7950 a few months ago (maybe bout a year ago I have post on here when i first got it) I managed to bag it for about £75 or so :)

I have been looking for an upgrade, my 7950 will cause the windows EFI Boot loader to crash when i try and boot windows in EFI mode (it wont even make it to the kernel) so I cant boot windows 10 in EFI mode which is something i desperately want to do, and also the 7950 is getting a bit long in the tooth for what i use it for, so I have been looking at upgrade options but sadly any sort of modern Card with a Mac EFI is big $$$,

Damn Crypto miners!!! In kinda the same boat, but I want a RX 480/580 but the miners bought all of them up!
