Is there hardware involved in this upgrade or only firmware? If it’s only firmware, I’m sure the update files will end up online for anyone to grab sooner than later.

What about Acura??? I have a 2019 RDX that I'd love to have wireless CarPlay. As it is, I just ordered the components I need to have wireless charging and wireless CarPlay.
I have a 2021 TLX and would love it as well

Mazda did. You can bring your car in and they will put CarPlay on it for 300! It involves adding a high powered usb port so it is wired.

Japanese automakers embracing CarPlay is great to see. The Germans and even Americans charging extra or finding a better solution is laughable. The market has spoken.

Good for Honda.
Thinking the original poster is looking for wireless though? (Since this is what the article is about?)
Is Mazda's one also wireless?

This is kind of funny. Kudos to them for trying. But compare this to free and frequent over the air upgrades immediately after you receive your car from Tesla. in this one, you own a car from 2-6 years and then bring it into the dealer and pay $200-$300 (including labor) to install a third party software update. Extremely clunky.
Not as clunky as never even getting CarPlay in any Tesla.

Mostly battery health. If you’re in a southern state, charging the battery in a hot car can destroy its health. Better to just wirelessly connect and only charge when you need to.
If your car has rear seat vents on the back of the center console, try putting your phone in the center console box (center arm rest storage). At least in my car, that area is always freezing cold when the AC is on

Wireless CarPlay is a very nice convenience. Just start the car and not worry about plugging in.

I'm not sure about the comment about Southern state heat. Don't cars have AC? 😂
You don’t drive with the windows down?

Even with the AC running, charging while streaming/maps can heat up the battery. Throw in some direct sun and you got a thermally throttled iPhone.

You realize Honda is doing a hardware upgrade here right?

I mean your statement is like asking Apple to upgrade the SSD capacity on your Mac with an over the air software update….

Oh well, typical Tesla comment.
No, it’s a software-only update. I suspect there’ll eventually be ways for Accord owners to install it without going to a dealer.

What’s the advantage of a wireless CarPlay vs the wired one? Considering that maps, etc., use quite a bit of a battery power.
I've used wireless CarPlay for years on my BMW. It's vastly better. The big advantage is that you never need to give your phone a second thought. You just get in your car and CarPlay is instantly connected and on your screen, regardless of where your phone is (assuming it's with you somewhere). Nothing stops you from placing your phone on the car's charging pad, of course, but you don't need to unless your battery demands it (and CarPlay will tell you when that's the case).

Really? According to the Service Bulletin they have to change an integrated circuit connection in the infotainment system.

If it really is just a software patch, my apologies to rbfoye1000. Honda should have just included this for free as part of their regular software updates.

My 2020 Civic does that half the time just when I plug in the phone and Carplay kicks in heh. There's been days on my way to work where I've had to pull the plug from the phone 3 or 4x, and reboot the stereo 3-4x before it starts giving me a screen and I can see my traffic maps. Apple Music still seems to work just fine, but switch it to the Music tab and black screen here we go..
Are you using an iPhone with Lightning or USB-C?

I have a 2020 Civic as well and it drove me and my girlfriend nuts. We upgraded our phones twice and I even fought with Honda and had them replace the entire head unit and the issue continued, only recently since we both got iPhone 15 Pros with USB-C that our CarPlay hasn’t acted funny. I personally think it’s the fact that Lightning is USB2.0 and the USB port in the Civic is USB3.0 so the source not being able to work at the speed of the port/vehicle is a major issue I think.

I've had wireless CarPlay in one vehicle. The biggest advantage was being able to keep the phone in my pocket, which was great for relatively short trips where charging wasn't necessary. $112 seems reasonable, but I'll be interested to see what the labor cost will be.
Your comment reminded me of when they built a dog park in an apartment where I lived. The maintenance guy goes, "The great thing about it is you can let your dog off leash in there."

I was like...yeah, that's the benefit alright. Lol.

Other than the convenience of no wires attaching to the iPhone what are the other pluses of wireless CarPlay?

We have two cars, one Audi (wired CarPlay) and one Toyota (wireless CarPlay). So much easier to work with wired CarPlay because you know what device will "own" the screen. If we are both in the Toyota it is always a battle between the phones which will rule the screen and connecting the right one is a pain. It's also a bit flakey and the owning device changes sometimes when there's an app crash (looking at you Waze!!). Has happened that both devices have been locked out until car is shutdown.
Interesting enough Waze never crashes in the Audi. Wired or better MMI firmware, who knows?
Wirez Rulez IMHO

I bought a MagSafe vent mount. The AC cools the battery (but blocks airflow for the passenger). It’s a good short term solution for 75% of the year.

I have a 2021 Accord Touring Hybrid with wireless carplay and my wife has a 2018 Accord Sport 2.0 without.
The "radios" are basically identical so I would guess to make it wireless is a fairly easy fix, probably no hardware involved.
Probably the reason why it is limited to Accords for those years.
I probably will pass because we use the carlink adapter in her car. It is a little janky but just works.

If this is just a software update, then why can’t they just offer it as an over the air update? Oh, yeah, that’s right. They can’t monetize over the air updates.
