If this is just a software update, then why can’t they just offer it as an over the air update? Oh, yeah, that’s right. They can’t monetize over the air updates.
It's similar to how you'll have a particular model of an outboard boat motor that is 40hp, but it's physically IDENTICAL to the 50hp model, with a software limitation to downrate it to 40hp... easier for them to produce just one version of the hardware, and then either program it to be a 40hp, or (for more money) a 50hp. But in order to maintain this particular method of upselling, you can't turn around later and provide the 40hp owners a free upgrade to 50hp.

Are you using an iPhone with Lightning or USB-C?

I have a 2020 Civic as well and it drove me and my girlfriend nuts. We upgraded our phones twice and I even fought with Honda and had them replace the entire head unit and the issue continued, only recently since we both got iPhone 15 Pros with USB-C that our CarPlay hasn’t acted funny. I personally think it’s the fact that Lightning is USB2.0 and the USB port in the Civic is USB3.0 so the source not being able to work at the speed of the port/vehicle is a major issue I think.

That could be it. My girlfriends does weird stuff every now and then in her Cadillac too, but that thing has its own issues with its display going on. We both have the 13 still, so we're still using lightning cables.

If you're left out in the cold on wireless CarPlay and charging, there are aftermarket solutions. I've had good luck with the products below.

Reading more on the Accord forums, it is 100% a software update. It basically a firmware update.
Once updated your head unit is factory reset.
Some guy is selling the USB stick on eBay after you send him your VIN number.

I’m surprised they are charging customers for this. If this is just a software update it should be free.

I have wireless CarPlay on my 2023 Acura Integra and I actually prefer wired. I have tested listening to music in my car via both wireless and wired and it definitely sounds better wired.

I'm probably going to do a hard pass on this. Doing the software update changes one of your USB connectors for CarPlay to a normal USB charging port. I like having 2 wired connections in my car. Also, wireless CarPlay drains your battery quick if you don't have a wireless charging pad in the car.

Based on my experiences so far, I prefer wired to wireless CarPlay. I hope we will have the option of going wired, and turn off wireless. Either that, or significantly improve the user interface. I like switching between the native user interface in a car and CarPlay, and have found that wireless options make this a lot more cumbersome and confusing.

Even the authentic Honda wireless CarPlay is buggy and sometimes does not connect.
But there is no way I would ever go back. I'm not sure how someone would prefer wired.
I want to hop into my car, any time of a day, and my CarPlay is just on.
I don't want to fumble for a wire if I am just driving 10 minutes to work.

"Honda Offering Wireless Apple CarPlay Upgrade for 2018-2022 Accords"

Every 2015-17 Accord owner screams in agony. I just want my 2017 Accord's head unit to work for more than 17 minutes before crapping out.

Really? According to the Service Bulletin they have to change an integrated circuit connection in the infotainment system.

If it really is just a software patch, my apologies to rbfoye1000. Honda should have just included this for free as part of their regular software updates.
I suppose a firmware or similar update could require a hardware change, but if that's the case, Honda's announcement is misleading because it doesn't say anything about an integrated circuit. Not only that, it claims the update is "quick." I'm checking with my dealer.

this is a good move in 2nd place after Porsche makes upgraded infotainment system for its -almost- classic cars.

...yet I suppose it's a mercedes s class in the photo.
