Ah yes. I’ll never forget when the first AirPods came out and everybody was saying the same thing. They look ridiculous. Like q tips coming out of your ears. “They look silly without the wire!” What if I lose them?

3D cameras are a very difficult thing for live events. It's always easier to imagine things and always better to trust that professionals know what they are doing. They can only bring new technology into their jobs when it is the right tool and there is enough demand. VR/MR/3D will always be niche no matter how good they make headsets. It's just not how the vast majority like to view movies and sports.
That's still the case though. They do look like little penises sticking out of our ears and they do still fall out easily when we want to do things like tie our shoe laces. That's why in the latest update Apple mentions they had to research thousands of ears. They admit themselves these things are not perfect yet.
Ideally they should be round and be made of a kind of pliable material that forms the shape of your earhole when you stick them in.

I saw someone wearing it at the Apple Store a couple months ago getting it demo'd, and ... I'm sorry, it looks ridiculous.

This seems unnecessarily and presumptuously final. Professionals have more knowledge, but no one knows how markets will change over time. People can only make educated guesses. Also even niche markets can be profitable if it’s big enough and the market is willing to pay enough.
Of all the criteria I considered before I bought one, how I would look in my own home never occurred to me.
100%. I get to unwind from the day and relax on Bora Bora. I want to forget I’m in the room, not wonder what I look like in the room. 😂
It’s totally a consumer device, though. It just also happens to be expensive, niche, takes effort, reduces one of your main senses, etc. This is why it isn’t popular yet.
Nice! It isn't just the cameras, it is the broadcast truck as well at the front end. It may be an ever bigger problem.
Because it's only for Apple users and when I tried the demo, it still seems very limited. Apple needs to open it up somewhat like the Oculus. I loved it but Apple only has eyes for the freaking iPhone

I am enjoying it much but also asking myself "so, what now"...
Discovered that app with a complete virtual DJ-equipment in "my room" - always wanted to try something like that, but did not want to buy the physical equipment - now it is here - an opportunity I never had before.
I am sometimes working in an environment with multiple screens around me - not cluttering my room with real monitors - a completely new experience.
If they released new Immersive episodes of each series every week it would be worth the money for that alone to me... they are coming in kinda rare though..
Weirdly I find it quite comfortable – would not even call it heavy. I could wear it for hours with no issue. Sadly there would be no reason to, as it is a very special and amazing to me but quite useless piece of tech. I know they want it to be a spatial computer but it lacks any functionality that you’d need your computer over your iPad for. Perhaps it’s a spatial iPad and those have the tendency to stay in people’s drawers. The cool factor wears off in two weeks and then you are mostly frustrated with how it’s essentially just Safari on there.
Not an owner at the moment (reason below), but my interest in the VP is 90% for productivity. I often have to work on the go, and having limited screen real estate is very hampering. I’ve used my 13” iPad as an additional display, but it’s still much too small, plus depending on where I am it can be difficult to find a good place to put it. The ultrawide Virtual Mac Display would be almost ideal for me. Media consumption would just be a bonus. I’m also interested to see if virtual environments would help me focus.
But I can’t make use of a VP right now because of the way that it currently (apparently) works. As I understand it, activating Virtual Mac Display disables all physical displays connected to the MacBook. This is a showstopper for me because for my work I need to draw on a pen display connected to my MacBook. Waiting to see if Apple changes this.
I thought looking at a physical screen via passthrough would also be a showstopper, but I tested out drawing on my iPad during a VP demo and it seemed totally fine. I would want to test it out for much longer though.
Who cares? I use my AVP exclusively in my home office with nobody watching me. I've used in on Airplanes with nobody who cares. This is a non-argument. So what. If you don't like it, just leave it at that.
I use mine for productivity. It's been the best device I've ever owned for the work I do.

For those who find that it has nothing compelling, I submit that it never promised anything that they would find compelling. It's been out less than 8 months now, and when it came out the focus was on media consumption with other features available.
I use mine daily for media consumption, primarily to watch sports. I do some web browsing, messaging, and on the rare occasions that I go back to use my desktop, I mirror the display.
Not on my radar when I bought it: the environments.
I've read the posts where people say it's uncomfortable for extended periods or that it's cumbersome to put on. I think maybe they need to fit it better. I've had no difficulty wearing it for hours, and I've long since developed the ability to fit it to my head in about 5 seconds.
I'll note that I'm getting older, and I live alone, so any social aspects of the device don't tend to apply to me. I wish it was priced reasonably enough for friends and family to have them so we could enjoy the occasional movie together, but that's not an option for me.
