So ****ing what. It's never been about the hardware. Never.

QFE. Its the software (UI elements, usability, responsiveness, battery management) that matter. My Dell Streak has a front facing camera (Android) but nothing can use it, especially since Skype is Verizon only. Worthless.

Amen to that. All the USB ports and SD card slots in the world won't save this "higher spec" junk from their respective destinies with oblivion...

These Android apps just look like something akin to Windows 98 to my eyes, even the web browser sends shivers down my spine at just how awful it looks-- like craptastic Internet Explorer on a phone, or something.

For a brand new, emerging, modern tablet platform, it's just soooooo ugly and decidedly un-futuristic. Yuck. :)

And then there is Samsung with their lame attempt at an iPad competitor, unfortunately with a lame tiny screen and inferior hardware and software. Nobody would want to be seen with it, not even the trolls posting on MacRumors. :D

Inferior hardware? Let's see... Galaxy Tab has:

* same CPU
* much better GPU
* 512MB RAM (vs 256 in iPad)
* flash card support
* USB port
* BlueTooth 3.0
* support for voice calls, MMS, SMS
* two cameras

Do Apple fans learn device functionality only from TV commercials? How else one would explain that you have Dell Streak and do not know how to use it? Check this video which shows how people use Fring for video calling on Dell Streak.

As far as software on Android is concerned, well it's not that simple. One reason iOS UI looks slick is because of the fixed screen size. But there are critical drawbacks to this approach. Android's UI is scalable and this allows companies to put it on all kind of devices. You can find Android devices with screens from 3" to 10". And Android does have some applications that are way better than the ones on iOS. Take a look at this picture of Galaxy Tab with Google Navigation. Will iOS device ever have this beauty of navigation?

There is also a real Samsung Galaxy Tab (7", 16:9) with absolutely superior hardware to iPad.

Totally superior... that's why it is shackled with the smartphone version of Android. Samsung has already announced that the Galaxy Tab WILL NOT run the forthcoming tablet version of Android. How totally useful!

While I do understan why some people would want it I really don't see it happening.

Yeah, me neither. If Apple were to release one, it would be serious iOS overkill. It's already on three four seperate devices of mostly equal size/functionality (okay, maybe the Nano shouldn't count). It's completely unnecessary. If one wants a smaller iPad, get an iPhone or iPod touch. No reason to create another device between the two.

I would rather Apple start working on integrating iOS and touch interfaces with desktop machines. I'm still dreaming of an iMac capable of sliding down on it's stand to a 20 or 30 degree horizontal angle where it transitions into a touch screen.

Some of you amaze me. You are deep in the bowels of an Apple fan forum and all you do is post negativity. Why are you here? How lame is your life that you have nothing to do but troll the very things you DON'T like? Seriously, go smell some flowers or eat a corndog, whatever makes you happy. Too many real problems in this world to have negative energy about a piece of tech.

ash =o)

Oh right, fring. Not Skype which is the de facto standard for video chat, I need to request that people install yet another program on their devices. Yeah, thats worth it. Never mind the fact that 99% of all other video/image apps on Android can't use the front facing camera, including the stock camera app. Nice planning.

Screen size or resolution? The Streak has pretty much the same resolution as the Droid X despite being 5" vs 4.3". And what does that have to do with it looking slick? Slickness comes from the UI elements not from screen size variation. Mac OS X looks nice on all resolutions.

But there are critical drawbacks to this approach. Android's UI is scalable and this allows companies to put it on all kind of devices.

Why does this matter? The iPhone 4 looks great at the higher resolution. The iPad looks great at the higher resolution and screen size. How did they pull it off?

Its not that its better than iOS because of the app, iOS doesn't have the app! I can throw 5,000 games at you that are INSANELY better than anything on Android.

FWIW Navigation on Android isn't anything great anyway. The voice sucks, and it doesn't look beautiful at all. Google decided to integrate navigation with their Street View and not port it to iOS. That was their business decision.

People want a middle ground. Like myself and the OP have said the 3.5inch is not great for reading and in my experience its horrible for viewing video and web browsing where as the current near 10-inch ipad is too big. What a 7 inch gains over a touch/iphone is more screen real estate for these things and what it gains in comparison to the current ipad is less footprint, lighter, easier to grip with one hand and more portable.

I dont know why people are finding it hard to grasp the idea that some people want something bigger than an ipod touch/iphone and smaller than a ipad there is a huge gap in size between them.

FYI, the iPad already is already "middle-ground" between a small notebook and a smartphone. You're just playing math games arguing that the public is asking for middle-ground. What happens when the 7" comes out? Won't people want a middle-ground between it and a smartphone. Then we'll get a 5.25" tablet. But the middle-ground will then be 4.375". Make it stop!

Apple has not released an iOS powered notebook so how can the iPad be a middle ground for something that dosen't exist:rolleyes:. As for your last point stop being over dramatic, There is over six-inches between the current ipod touch/iphone and the ipad it is not unreasonable to want a model that sits between them. Some people want an even bigger ipad and thats fine too everyone wants a size that suits there needs.

If Apple wanted to have a 7" iPad they would have released it at launch. It's not like the Kindle did not exist at the time when Apple was designing the iPad, and contrary to what many here seem to think, I am willing to bet that perhaps just maybe Apple might have done a pretty thorough job of market research and weighed choices like ergonomics and size pretty carefully when they settled on the design specs for the iPad.

So ****ing what. It's never been about the hardware. Never.

So when Apple announces the iPad it's all doom and gloom and "where's my USB" and "where's the SD slot" and "I want a camera" and "why can't I hook up my hard drive" and "apple sucks" and "this will fail" but when Samsung does it, "it's never been about the hardware".

I doubt there will be one, but I'd like it just for a car install.

I wonder if it would be possible to gut one and find a 7" touchscreen to use.

Yet another screen size to add into the mix? Doubt it unfortunately.

It's absolutely going to happen, and Apple will sell all they can make. For those who travel frequently & internationally the 7" size makes perfect sense.

It's no different that the laptop sector that offers 11.1" / 12.1" / 13.3" / 14.1" / 15.4" / 15.6" / 16.3" / 17.0" / 18.4" / 19.2"

Apple is very smart when it comes to selecting sizes that sell. Be prepared to see a 7" iPad in the Apple Store near you.

I'm all set for one. It will go everywhere with me.

Then perhaps the iPad also has an "inferior hardware" because they are both using the same core chipsets made by, none other than Samsung.

:D You nailed him on that. . Like we used to say at work - "How do you know when the consultant doesn't know what he is talking about? -His lips are moving! "
I would have to say with that in your front pocket you might have to walk funny though.
The claim that a 7 inch iPad would be no different in portability than the full sized one is not grounded in any factual testing.

I haven't heard anything about the 5 inch iPad, but I think the 7 inch version should be released, indeed, because for some people this size may fit better than 9.7''. I also agree that Samsung Galaxy Tab is great. I watched a promo-video and I was just amazed by it! It looks very cool, I like the features it has, and that's great that it combines a phone and a tablet.

It doesn't really fit in his pocket; quite a bit is sticking out. Sitting down might be tough and dangerous with that chunk in your pocket. Putting something that large with a glass screen in a pocket could go crunch when attempting to sit.

Only something about the size of an iPod Touch is really practical for putting in a pocket.

*Smaller screen
*Inferior screen (no IPS)
*Inferior battery life
*Lowe storage
*More expensive

In short, all that matters.

Not talking about the OS that has no future out of smartphone segment if the rumor is true. So go ahead. Buy it and show it off here so we can have a good laugh.
