It doesn't really fit in his pocket; quite a bit is sticking out. Sitting down might be tough and dangerous with that chunk in your pocket. Putting something that large with a glass screen in a pocket could go crunch when attempting to sit.

Only something about the size of an iPod Touch is really practical for putting in a pocket.

He also likely searched his closet for pants with a big enough pocket and even then this isn't practical. It likely isn't even comfortable walking with this in your pocket and forget sitting down.

Pocketable to me means I can slip it into the pocket of a button shirt, so I can sit down comfortably and worry free. Anything beyond this size isn't really pocketable and is just transportable.

That said, I do think Apple could use a model in the 5-7" range. They really could use something to work for a server in a restaurant. To do that they need to hold it across in one hand, so they have a solid grip, not balance it like they must do with an iPad.

I agree that this size is ideal. We need an iPad that is the right size to hold in one hand on the back and the fingers grasping the edge. With that size you no longer need to have a wide ipad border.

I wouldn't say ideal. More like optimized for one handed use when you need it.

But it would be suboptimal for full page viewing of PDFs/Comics or anything else that works with a full page.

My ideal home iPad would be about 11" screen with 1200x800 + resolution. Because at home I don't care that much about one handed use or portability and I would like to view full pages at a time.

I have 100% proof that a new iPad device is coming out in the near future. It may be an update to the current model, but the wording of the NDA suggests it is a different form factor.

This is not an NDA for me, I have nothing to do with programming.

Current iPad is too big??? How soon we forget...

I don't know if there will ever be a 7" or 5" iPad, but the logic put forth in these forums about it always sort of blows my mind.

It seems many have forgotten that before the iPad, the smallest thinnest computing device Apple made that wasn't a pocket sized smart phone (iPhone) or iPod Touch was the 13" Macbook Air. This was the gold standard of a light, small computer perfect for traveling. It weighs twice as much as the iPad, is significantly larger, and has less than half the battery life.

I would argue that NO ONE has decided against buying the iPad after trying it out at the store because they think it's TOO BIG. It's really as small as it gets.

In fact, after seeing the press photos and the January keynote, once I actually saw the iPad in person launch day I was a little taken aback at how small it was! I'm not the only one, either, it just seemed like it would be bigger to hold in your hand, but now there's a vocal minority who says it's too big?

That was in April, and now there is a chorus of complainers here who swear up and down that a 7" would somehow make all right in the universe.

You won't be able to hold it in one hand between your thumb and finger like the Samsung Galaxy Tab because it'll be 4:3 and not that goofy looking 16:9, and let's be serious, it won't fit in any normal persons pocket, either.

So I would say to not hold your breath for a 7" iPad, but go ahead anyway, perhaps if some of you pass out from lack of oxygen these threads will finally stop. :)
