I'm no scholar on Westeros history either but I believe the Targaryens came from a different continent (Valyria?) and conquered Westeros because of course they had dragons - I'm not sure how they came to have them but I think they were probably quite common where they came from. I'm not sure if George ever wrote about it and I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong - I can't be bothered to look it up :)

I got through the first half of this episode before the HBO Max stream started going wonky. It was off to a good start - hopefully I can finish it today. It seems that this season will have a time jump - I see that the 2 lead actresses who's names I forget have adult versions cast. Or did that happen last night? Guess I'll find out....

Edit: So I ended up watching from the beginning today and thought it was a fantastic first episode. I'd like to see this show go on for years go through the Targaryen dynasty and end with the Mad King/Robert's Rebellion. The source material is only two books so I wonder what the plan is.....
You said, but they did not have dragons at this point (this show)? So I was wondering what that is about. The Targaryens are on Westeros with Dragons and took over with dragons, yes?

I'm not sure what you're asking? How the Targaryens ended up on Westeros with dragons?
When you go back to the post I replied to originally, it said something like "but there were no dragons in Westeros in that time period (when the show takes place), or maybe I'm losing my mind and trying to nail that down. :D

Too early to say. I can change next ep.
At this point I’ll take any dragon ready for a ride: come on drago babe, let's fly! in best Michael Burnham way 👽💫🥰
Fair enough. I'll probably waffle throughout but from this episode, perhaps because of it being new, I surprised myself by preferring Rhaenyra's version.

Ohhh….that statement was in reference to the cancelled pilot that was to take place thousands of years before GoT and be about the first Long Night/creation of The Wall, etc. and that was an imaginary conversation as to why it was cancelled - because there would have been no dragons in it. Sorry if that wasn’t clear - I tend to type weird stuff as I think it. I was probably in a slightly altered state. 😀

The Targaryens invaded Westeros about 100 years before this show and brought the dragons with them from Valyria.

Aegon had a dream - they called it a song of Ice & Fire, GRRM is gonna try to milk this franchise for the next decade or so.
Lol. That wasn’t my question. I know how the dragons ended up in Westeros. I was quoting @Huntn who’s post no longer made sense since the person he was quoting had edited their post afterwards. Confusing AF, eh? 😁

Good setup so far for me. CGI is definitely lower budget but doesn't bug me.

That’s a great title. :D
His writing was superb while it lasted. 😑
HBO writers super blew the end of GoT, so there could be a reason to be wary or should GRRM be blamed?

A point being that when HBO was replicating the story from the existing cannon (the books), other than Season 1 which felt fairly true to the first book, that all the follow on seasons as excellent as they are, felt like story outlines, condensing down large volumes into 10 episodes, and then that ending… 🤮

At least with this show there are no books to diminish. 🤔

One thing I did like is how we got to see some of the families from years past when they were paying tribute to the new queen...

I did like how they tied it all together with the original GOT's...

Watched it again as I know I missed stuff. I am excited to see what comes out of this story line.

I loved episode 2 and found it to be even stronger than the premiere.

Queen of the episode! 🔥

A lot of folks are whining that they used the same GOT theme score but I think it was a brilliant choice. It ties the thread of the two shows together but the visual credits are unique to HOTD. For anyone lost following the opening credits, there's a great breakdown Twitter thread to read.

I was quite happy they used the same score.
Enjoyed the second episode. A few bits were quite predictable, but it’s still setting the scene really.
Where do the eggs come from by the way? It’s not clear if there are lots or just a few.

S1E2- I liked the confrontation on the bridge, the daughter of the King has the ability to judge and can take decisive action, despite being dismissed daily by the men surrounding th King including the Queen Who Never Was.

Well if you give her the job of filling cups at the small council, you’d kind of expect people to think she’s not really up to much.
But I guess we will see more of her ‘Dani’ streak as the season progresses!
