Can anyone view image size of 7680 × 4320 in Preview in their iMAC 5K running latest version 10.10.3? I can't view an image of that size, it opens but disappear and only grey background left.

Here is the picture for testing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rqofr2xub...s_with_Rainbow_Colors_Background7680.jpg?dl=0

It just on my iMAC 5K that I can't view it in Preview. My Macbook Retina can open just fine. I am wondering if it is software bug related to iMAC 5K or is it my computer.

Just checked it... Problem with preview is still there... It is quite interesting, even finder shows the thumbnail of the image, but as soon as I open it in preview I just see nothing....

I tried it and just as you, I can't see it - I get a black square instead of the image in preview on my base iMac 5K, 10.10.3
However, if I save it as a PNG file, it opens fine. So, it's definitely a software issue with jpgs.

Thanks for testing :D. I should have come here first and check with everyone else. From now on I will only talk to the Apple support as my last resort. Honestly all they can ever think of is reinstall OSX, format your HDD....:(

I just realized that my iMAC 5k Color is more bright then the macbook pro retina. How can I put this to words....the iMAC display is more like whiter than the Macbook retina. The macbook retina is sort of darker in color. So to me my iMAC color looked a bit washed out....Anyone own both units think the same?

My MacBook Pro Retina is definitely darker than the iMac. In fact, it is a bit too dark for my tastes as I can't see some of the darker details in images. I prefer the iMac's screen - a lot brighter. As for washed out - no, it's not washed out, the colors pop and contrasts are even greater. The screen is great.

Will you stop looking for problems and enjoy your iMac already?

As mentioned above, the Retina iMac's display is actually a lot brighter and more vibrant. You can always turn down the brightness on the iMac to match the rMBP.

Use the brightness keys on the keyboard or the brightness control in System Preferences > Displays.

Oh increase/decrease brightness.

Well I think it is true that iMAC is more vivid and more bright, but what I meant is that the colors appear to be more lighter on iMAC then macbook. Like yellow looks more light yellow on iMAC and on macbook it looks more dark yellow. So iMAC colors to me looks more lighter....

Very pleased with the 5k display here! It has a tiny band of difference in brightness at the left/right side of the screen running the full height, but it is constant, very narrow, and perhaps to be expected.

I think it is testament to the overall quality of these displays that such "flaws" are more apparent than on other displays.

After looking at the 5k display for several hours, it just hurts looking at my old monitor. As good as it is (was) for its time, the difference is huge.

Unless you have a clear defect, put the microscope away and enjoy it.

I can confirm after updating to 10.10.3 the JPEG image does not display properly in Preview. However, after installing the iMac Graphics Update the issue seems to be resolved.

On my iMac5k with the 10.10.3, the supplemental and graphics update it also displays fine. It's rather quick to open too if someone is wondering...

well I will share my input here regarding the screen on my new Retina iMac. First I'll start off by saying this is actually my second one do to the one I ordered having been returned do to a black scuff mark or nick of some sort at the back of the aluminum body right above the ram access cover. I never got a chance to see or check the screen on that one however just now being on my new replacement I can truly say the screen is just so sharp, crisp and, vivid its really really stunning and given the links to the tests and also reading a bit of the post here I must be honest that I do have a bit of "yellow-ing" or "bleed" towards the bottom edge of my screen its however very minimal and isn't notice much or even at all when on a black screen unless the screen is completely black with no task bar or dock at the bottom. I would say honestly the only time I see it is when I restart the computer and the screen is all black that's when I see the really small bit of yellow towards the bottom. Honestly its making me want to return it for another one to see if i can truly get a "perfect" screen but the process is a bit tiring to me and then I also read a few posts here noting that black light / edge bleed / yellowing, is a bit normal or common with screens of this type so I'm not sure what to go by or if what I have is truly normal or not.

The above having been said personally I can live with it and it doesn't bother me all that much given its minimal or really minor or small compared to some of the pics I've seen posted in this thread however if the yellow I did notice is not normal by any means it does somewhat bother me. Could some of you tell me if you think a minimal or small or tiny bit of yellow edge bleed is "normal" or not?

Yes, a little backlight bleed is "normal".

Anyone here upgrade to Capitan notices things change in the display brightness? It appears to me that the brightness level is relatively lower in Capitan than Yosemite. Like 50% yosemite = 100% capitan.

Hopefully it is not just me. I haven't upgrade my Macbook to Capitan yet because of that brightness issue....Did you upgrade your iMAC 5k to Capitan as well? I really don't like contacting Apple, last time when my iMAC 5K had problem opening large image files with Preview, they asked me to clean install, PRAM reset, Internet recovery and guess what it is their bug.....gosh I wasted my time for nothing.

Also do you notice that enable/disable the 'automatic brightness' also cause Gamma changes as well under Capitan. Apparently that is what Apple called the 'Ambient light compensation' which is a separate check box but got merged with 'automatic brightness' in Beta 7. Apple software quality seems to be go down lately (so many bugs and issues)....

P.S: Apologies for my rant...

Yes, I updated my iMac to Capitan at the same time. The only brightness issue etc I have noticed is in Bootcamp. When Windows first loads the screen is really bright then, as a driver kicks in, it dulls. When it shuts down the screen suddenly gets brighter as the driver is unloaded.

I'm afraid I haven't played with the automatic brightness setting to notice a difference in the Gamma.

I see, thank you for the response. I am not using any bootcamp on my iMAC so I am not sure about the problem either. Are you enable the 'Automatic brightness' on your iMAC? iMAC unlike laptops stay in one place so 'automatic brightness' to me means nothing, so I always disable it.

Here is a link to an article talks about the gamma changes: http://www.mackungfu.org/el-capitan-s-crazy-gamma-adjustments-photographers-beware
