Let me know when I can do what I consider to be a really, really fundamental basic thing like play a YouTube video full screen but on silent, while listening to music via a background-running app like Music Streamer or even Apple's own Music app. I couldn't last time I tried, but I'll fess-up and say I actually haven't tried that on iPadOS 16 yet. I've been able to do that on a Mac or PC for forever. Heck even my 30-year-old Amiga would be able to do the equivalent of that, with the caveat there are no precise like-for-like apps.

Genuine Q: Why are you watching videos on silent (I assume with subs) whilst listening to music? Looking at your bio I assume its something to do with soundtracking maybe?

You can watch Youtube videos on silent with music playing from Apple Music no problem on the iPad.

If he's experiencing difficulties with the stock Youtube app, then that's Google their own limitations they put in place rather than the iPad being limited to do this.

As Apple once famously said .... there is an app for that.

Recently started a new job and was forced to use Windows after years. What I realised is that these operating systems do 95% the same thing, and I actually found myself feeling incredibly focussed working on Windows. It's made me consider getting a personal Windows and Android machine to get out of the Apple bubble a little bit more.
I’ve always had to use windows for work, however I wasn’t really using the computer all that much in my previous roles. I’d spend about 30 minutes in a 12 hour work day typing up patient notes. However, I now work from home and use a windows laptop all day long. Admittedly I hadn’t used a windows computer intensively since 2015 when I switched to The Mac for my personal computing. I have to admit that it’s really efficient and gets the job done. The old muscle memory really kicked in and despite having a Mac for the past 8 years I still think I know how to use windows better. Not sure if I would buy another windows laptop for personal use as I would loose the ecosystem features. However, I wouldn’t be an automatic no, which it would have been before I started my current role.

I have a 12.9” M2 iPad Pro 128 GB / 8 GB. Also have a 16” M1 Max MBP 64 GB RAM.

Just now tried editing a PDF doc in the Files app on iPad with stage manager open with Safari & Teams app with a PiP Youtube video playing.
My Files app refreshed in the middle of editing & lost all my progress on the doc & I had to restart it all. Couldn’t undo. Even tho with iPadOS 16 Apple enabled memory swap up to 16 GB, my app still refreshed & lost progress.
So from my usage, the iPad Pro is a pathetic device with an overpowered M2 chip.
Not to mention the terrible & clunky stage manager experience with trying to switch between windows.
I do use it about 6 hours a day tho, due to the portability it’s more convenient than my 16” MBP. But the actual usage experience is worse.

Safari / Webkit limitation is a whole other discussion. Safari is garbage & laggy. It makes my 64 GB M1 Max feel like it’s dying. Terrible browser. Firefox for the win. Too bad all browsers on iPadOS / iOS are reskins of Safari. Another reason why iPad is worse.

I try to do school work, simple document editing with the iPad, but the experience is literally worse than the MBP in every way. Unless you’re a digital artist & require the Apple Pencil, it’s a frustrating & poorer experience every time.

Even using the iPad Pro for media consumption is not ideal, due to the aspect ratio, you get massive black bars essentially wasting your screen space. The MBP 16:10 is way better for watching videos.

Personally, in every way that I use my iPad, my MBP can do those tasks easier.

Only reason I got it was to be a MacBook Air like device with the Magic Keyboard to take on the go while leaving the 16” MBP at home, & for downloading & watching movies/shows offline for travel, & for FaceTime. Side note, the FaceTime camera on the M2 iPad Pro is so bad & grainy compared to the FaceTime camera on the iPhone 14 Pro in the same lighting environment that I tested. So another area where it fails again.
So many flaws with this device that I want to love it’s sad.

Finally, my BASE storage M2 iPad Pro 12.9” cellular was $1650 with the Magic Keyboard. That is a ridiculous price.
The M1 Pro 14” is on sale everywhere at that price, M1 & M2 MacBook Air are cheaper than that too.
The iPad is really just an enthusiast device for someone who wants a tablet or hybrid device.
iPadOS is holding it back from being a laptop replacement.
The thing is, Apple doesn‘t intend for the iPad Pro to “replace” MacBooks. I, like you, have a 16 inch MacBook Pro and a 12.9 inch iPad Pro that I take with me on trips because the 4.7lbs MacBook is just too heavy and bulky for that use.

Do I miss the macOS interface when trying to do “serious” work? Of course! But when traveling iPadOS accomplishes most of what I need to get done (and usually the remainder can wait until I return home). So, for me iPad is really a laptop substitute rather than a “replacement“.

I tend to watch a lot of restoration videos of old and vintage hifi and studio gear, and the audio does not interest me.
Nice. I had a couple of interesting pieces at one point a Marantz 2220, and a nikko 220 power amp and I think the pre amp 80. Both were awesome. Still wish I kept the Marantz for my new music room. That thing had such a nice warm sound you can't get today.

The oldest amp I possess is a rather unusual one I can find nothing at all about anywhere. My dad swapped a pair of Beyerdynamic microphones for it in 1971, it is branded as Goodwood. It has cartridge inputs for both a magnetic (MM) and crystal cartridge. Again it has the 60s/70s warm and cuddly sound that is the polar opposite of that of clinical modern designs.

(Sorry OP: off-topic nerding)

I've been the biggest simp for iPads ever since the original in 2010. But now that I am trying to do serious video workflows with Lumafusion, and constantly finding my iPad crashing between app swaps, file transfers, and general bugginess with servers, I've just about had it.
I was literally the guy who Apple praised as the adopter of iPad as main computer... until now.

I'm typing this on my M1 iPad Pro now; still love it for browsing. But it really is starting to bother me; they can't call it pro with all the bugs, and pure lack of features.

In my ideal world, I'd have a bug-free, snappy iPad, kinda like how the 4th gen felt on iOS 6, or the 2011 MacBook Pros felt on Snow Leopard. I love the concept of a touchscreen device that slips into a backpack, but once home can plug into a thunderbolt hub and run 4 displays, keyboard and mouse and gigabit ethernet with studio speakers... but the dream isn't quite there yet. Annoying. Even more annoying as I'm not a fan of modern MacOS.

iOS is riddled with bugs, I am guessing iPadOS is gathering quite a collection too. I only use my ipad as a consumption/reading device. I will probably write some scripts and articles for upcoming projects I am working on but as far as heavy lifting it's my pc's for that.

iOS and iPadOS are "riddled with bugs"? So you're moving to a.......PC?

Every large-scale s/w system has plenty of bugs. I've worked on flight s/w and spacecraft s/w and the deployed systems had bugs even with the extensive, in-depth testing they went through.

My pc has less bugs at this point. Might want to watch fanboy Luke Miani's video on the subject. Even he is sick of the massive amount of bugs......K. My iPad and iPhone have more bugs and glitches than my windows devices. You can believe what you wish, that does not make it true.

I use all platforms and am not a fan of any one platform, as I love all technology. I don't have any dog in the hunt other than what I use daily.

1) Luke Miani and his ilk are a terrible gauge for anything. They are going to praise or complain about something based on what they think their click numbers need. You can keep those people—I couldn’t care less what Luke Miani thinks.

2) Thinking through my entire range of hardware and software that I use for both work and personal tasks, my Apple and Nintendo stuff definitely get the award for least buggy or problematic. In fact, my entire extended family eventually ditching all their PCs and Android phones over the years and switching to Macs and iPads instead has been wonderful for my free time, as it means I rarely get tech support calls on nights and weekends anymore.

3) All software has bugs. Apple’s included. But the fact is, there are two companies I can consistently name that create problems in my setup due to random unexplainable bugs and disconnections. The first one is Sonos—their software controllers and firmware just need some serious help or a project manager or something. The second one is Microsoft. Whether it’s OneDrive randomly erasing hours worth of work for no good reason or Excel suddenly refusing to open Excel files or Teams and its janky keyboard shortcuts and connection problems or whatever else. Office is still the gold standard for productivity, and I live in their software 40+ hours a week, but it has some major problems that actually cause me some real time and frustration. My Roomba gives me less trouble than Office sometimes.

So there you have it. I’m not trying to be confrontational or insulting. I’m just honestly shocked by the “PC has less bugs” claim. Last I checked, Windows is still a rat‘s nest of old code and UI that needs to be seriously buttoned up.

I have never had Onedrive erase anything on me. Sounds more like user error than anything with ms.

Just based on value

As a tablet that I use for work everyday the mini rocks, does everything I need, plus can do basic computer stuff on it, it’s small and fits anywhere, also the one important program I run on a tablet is a iOS program

For computer stuff, Apple is just overpriced for what it delivers IMHO

If I’m getting a computer I want a full on computer with more ports, upgradable, and just more power for the $$, most programs I use that do require computer power and ports and all, run on windows anyways

So yeah, the computer side I can do better getting windows gaming laptop, or building a desktop

Tablet wise, at least for me, nothing really competes with the mini

Yeah, at 45 years old I haven’t figured out drag and drop yet.

Oh wait, that’s Microsoft, not me. And I’m not sure on the age for Microsoft.

Yeah, with OneDrive on my Win11 devices, I've stuck with the Select-Files-to-Upload approach and that's worked consistently well (about 300GB of primarily photos).

I learned that lesson too--the hard way unfortunately. Whether it's just in plain OneDrive or I need to put something in Teams, I always use that option as well. The problem I was consistently having before that was that it would not keep versions consistent and would overwrite new versions with older versions for some reason. Once I stopped dragging and dropping and started using ONLY the web versions of Teams and OneDrive, that fixed it. If you can call that a fix.

I haven't had issues like that either but I don't necessarily point to user error - could be implementation side if its an enterprise account.

I'm the opposite of others posting here, I'll sync local and drag and drop. I also work in shared teams folders that my team will sync locally and haven't had any of the issues people are describing. Everyone's mileage is varying so yes, its pointing to bugginess - perhaps the inconsistency is due to setup or workflow differences, i'm not sure.

At the end of the day though selection of tools comes down to preferred workflow. What's superior for one person isn't necessarily superior to another so there's no way anyone's going to convince me to switch my preferred tools for certain tasks any more than I can convince someone else.

I have to take the blame for starting the argument. At the end of the day I don't care who uses Windows or whatever else. And for the longest time, because of the "bad old days" in the 90s, I refused to use Macs ever again. Things change.

In my role I used an iPad Pro 12.9 exclusively. We were all cloud base and the apps were perfect for my use. Easy to use in meetings, travel, LTE, etc.

It’s all about use and if it works for YOU.
