Macos is restricted to registered developers isn't it?

All are restricted, but the macos, just like in past couple of years, only need a developer profile to download the beta update over the air, making it a lot easier. With ios 13 beta, you'll need itunes and install it the old school way using your mac, since there is no developer profile available for OTA.

I have a friend in Apple Support who says there were way too many non-developers calling in for support with their iPhones and iPads last year whining about poor battery life and crashed phones. People would put the Developer Only Beta on their device, it wouldn't function normally, and then they would call in demanding money, support, etc.
Some devices were even bricked and there was so much annoyance that Apple Support's management team asked for a change in Developer Betas.

This Developer Beta is actually not for daily use. It is for finding serious issues in your app such as panics, crashes, load fails, UI issues, etc. It's not for some 12 or 41 year old iOS fanatic to test out so they can harangue the release in their blog. Apple has become seriously annoyed by Tech Bloggers and Press blasting them over the keyboard issue (small batch), the Bloomberg Microchip fake news, the usual Apple is Doomed press cycle (worth over $1 Trillion but is doomed), and then they have Tech journalists downloading incomplete, beta software and claiming iOS 12 is buggy and unworkable for four months until they launch the GM in the fall.

Put yourself in their shoes and remember that these days, Everyone Is A Critic (EIAC). EIAC people typically have no idea what they are talking about and spout ridiculous nonsense on their blogs, and depending on the size of their fanbase it can spread vicious rumors that are hard to refute. iOS 13 will have a Public Beta once the serious issues are found by Developers.

And making it less easy to install reduces the footprint of EIAC folks from writing snarky ass articles about unfinished software.

Also, it's not that difficult to find the IPSWs and install it. If you're a Developer, like I am, you would already know what to do. It doesn't take any longer.

If your UDID is not registered, it will be blocked and your phone will become useless.

Fake news. Stop spreading false rumors.

If Apple really want, they can block all non-developer Apple ID from activating the device and force Apple ID login during initial setup. No one knows if Apple will do that during iOS 13 beta, but people should really quit this beta train ASAP if they really don’t have compelling reason to try it out other than wanting to use new features.

As of now, installing macOS 10.15 is the easiest way to install iOS 13 beta 1 and you can try out new macos during the process. But be prepared to DFU when things go south.

Of all the people that own iPhones its a really tiny miniscule amount of people trying the beta trust me.... I know it might seem like a lot because you are on the forums but its just a small pocket of tech enthusiasts on forums like MR, reddit, etc and then developers. There is no need for this warning at all... Most of the people here are pretty tech savvy and they know the risks, and they know how to restore and get out of the beta if need be.

Indeed, no UDID is required (however some sites still sell UDID registration, wonder if they do anything at all) just installed yesterday using the Windows Workaround. Was up and running within 15 minutes of finding the instructions. No UDID, no nothing, it is working, and surprisingly performs quite well.

While I agree only a small portion of iPhone user installing beta, among these people, there are still quite a few having no idea how to install iOS 13 beta 1 because of the changed method. Also, using an unstable beta means that the supposed “eject button” may not work when things go south. That’s why Apple puts that warning specifically for this beta. Not even iOS 9 or 10 had this in the beta page, or iOS 11.

This was likely done so people weren't 'sharing' their beta profiles, so you have to register your UDID again and so Apple knows that only Registered Devs are using the betas. Actually it was very smart by Apple, they're protecting those who pay the $99 per year. I'm not gonna say it's easy to upgrade now, but it's protects both Apple & Devs.

Actually you don't have to register UDID.

It's likely a good idea to because Apple could brick all unauthorized ones if they wanted. It's unlikely they ever would but it is Apple after all...

It's always a good idea to have the UDID registered because they could brick all unauthorized devices if they chose too, highly unlikely they would but it is Apple after all... And it does say when installing on iTunes checking Apple's servers.

Are you referring to command prompt installation?

Shoot me a PM with info if you don’t mind. I’m on 12.4 beta, curious if that will be an issue.

The reason why they required the registered UDID before was because iOS beta was truly only for developers to test their apps. Around iOS 8 when Apple launched the beta program, they scrapped that, and I don't think they will bring it back. If they truly wanted to, they would have done that instead of requiring Xcode/macOS 10.15 for the install.

They still have the UDID registration in the Dev portal, under the Account section. I do it as a just in case, I doubt they require it because it’s not noted, but again it is Apple after all...

Same here, I was genuinely amazed that it worked so simply lol I figured I be trouble-shooting all day!

Yes command prompt installation. I was in the latest 12.4 beta as well, no issues.

You need to make sure :
- iTunes version installed is the normal Apple version, not Windows Store version
- Find my iPhone is off
- You "Trust" your commputer from your phone

Yet I have nuked my Mac just to troubleshoot infinite waiting when trying to upgrade. Maybe I will spend a whole day for that. Idk.z

And yet: see the post immediately above yours. I suspect that is a very accurate portrayal. What small percentage of non-developer iPhone users need to install the beta to overwhelm Apple's tech support? .0001%?

That’s the worst part of it. People easily get emotional for certain extreme words (such, trash, unstable, crash, brick), and those narratives tend to spread like a virus, quickly and viciously. By the time iOS 13 beta 3 or 4 released, damage is already done. It’s that Apple can afford to such PR damage unlike other companies.

I for one clearly know what I am doing and know the basic steps necessary to escape the beta train. But many don’t. I feel mixed about them, a bit more on the negative side.

As for the rest parts, nice story. Good job.

Apple definitely can roll back to old UDID measure or go even more extreme to force Apple ID login and developer account check before activating. Most people don’t even realise how many things Apple can do to iOS to restrict it to a level normal users or even IT admins can only imagine. Look no further than the iPhone/iPod paired with beats headphones in the Apple store.

it’s surprisingly stable on my ipad pro 11, was expecting the worst actually haha but for a beta 1, pretty good... just tried playing nba 2k19 using my ps4 controller and it works great

iOS 13 is a whole new level for Apple. I ain't certain about this but it seemed even the battery life was slightly better coming from iOS 12.3.1. Guess how insane it could be with the GM launch?

And the speed was crazy as well.

The only reason I went back to iOS 12 was because I had Mail fetch issues despite a DFU restore. Will try iOS 13 again after a beta or two.

Yes, the mail app seems to be awful in beta 1. It’s slow and laggy and I often don’t get notified of new mail. And mail I do read doesn’t actually get marked as read on my other devices.

This has been the case for me for three years. The only notification works for me is the ringtone. I don’t think this is an iOS 13 issue.

No, this is a different issue. I’m sure you’ve checked, but for the past few years the default notification for email is sound only and you need to go into the notification settings and select banners and lock screen notifications for emails if you actually want to see alerts for them. I’ve also seen some cases where you do go and select visual notifications and it will reset back to sound only randomly.

But in this case the mail app is just awful. I think it locks up and that’s why there are no notifications... no sounds or banners or anything.
