This machine works fine with Catalina and the other GPU so I don't think it's a hardware issue
Anyway I have to finish for today. Will take another look tomorrow if I get some time. Thanks for your help. Appreciate it.

Btw, Apple still offers High Sierra full installer for download, just checked with installinstallmacos.py and is downloading:

BootROM version?  > AboutThisMac > SystemReport > HardwareOverview > SystemFirmwareVersion:

Both High Sierra and Mojave require firmware upgrades, if you don't have it already you won't install:

  • High Sierra: MP51.0089.B00 (also works with Macs already upgraded to 144.0.0.0.0)
  • Mojave: 144.0.0.0.0

Well this morning 'Install macOS' actually DID do something. I haven't a clue what changed overnight but that's what happened. So now I'm running High Sierra and I've put the GTX 680 back in. I assume I need to do this as Mojave requires Metal GPU support. I tried the Mojave bootable install disk I made yesterday but that wouldn't work (back to the ''Install macOS' doesn't do anything' thing again. This is a legit upgrade now so I'd have thought it would possible to install it from the desktop but it seems no you just get the dreaded beach ball of death.

I found the original installer for Mojave in my archives but that wouldn't work either. Looks like it must the GTX 680 to blame.

The certificate on your original Mojave installer has expired - it won't run anymore. You need to download it again.

Well surprisingly it did. I left the beachball spinning and when I came back nearly 2 hours later it was ready to install. It may not succeed. We'll see.

Long day on this today. My macPro was in an unusable state so had to start again from scratch. Deleted everything and installed another copy of High Sierra. All seemed fine til I quit or rather tried to quit - it wouldn't. Had to pull the plug in the end. Restart took about half an hour but surprisingly was OK after that. I checked it out thoroughly and quit/relaunched a few times - seemed rock solid so I moved on to Mojave. Whatever anyone says it's nigh on impossible to get an installer but I did manage to eventually but to no avail. Same story as a few days ago -it wouldn't install because my GTX 680 is 'not metal compatible'.

This is the macOS installer screen, just go on. Btw, even with a extremely slow USB key, I can boot a High Sierra createinstallmedia USB installer in less than 5 minutes.
Got a solid high Sierra install now but Mojave install is impossible because of the GT680. I have a SAPPHIRE Radeon PULSE RX 580 8 GB in one of my other Mac Pros, would that work with the Mojave install do you think? If not what would?

While booting a createinstallmedia USB installer fo Mojave don't work with Nvidia GPUs, if you run the installer from HighSierra to do a clean install to another disk it will work fine.
How do you actually do that? There's doesn't seem to be a target disk option in the macOS Utilities window. just...

Restore From Time Machine Backup
install macOS
Get Help Online
Disk Utility

I tried formatting a disk to AFPS in Disk Utility but same 'No Metal Support' error. I must be missing something. What's the secret?

You need to have another disk in your Mac or (it would be very slow) a USB connected disk. When you run the installer you select "Install macOS". If you have a location (disk) other than your High Sierra disk available you select that location. You are not instalingl Mojave as an upgrade to High Sierra you are installing a separate macOS install on the other disk.

I fully grasp the principle and have had 2 extra free drives installed on the machine since I embarked on this endeavour for that very purpose. I just don''t understand how to select the target disk in the macOS Utilities window. It's certainly not obvious.

With the greatest respect the sentence 'Remember: Apple recommend....' is hard to understand from a purely English language perspective but putting that aside you can't get the official App Store High Sierra update anyway. A year ago you could but now the download works but the file never makes past the input buffer because Software Update kicks in, deletes it and informs you can't have it. in short it never makes it to the downloads folder.

... Also I used to run Mojave on this machine. That's where I did the OCLP Catalina install from.

Well I figured you might understand this but just in case....what I don't understand is usually the first screen or so after starting the installer shows you the locations you can instal - it says "Select the disk where you want to install macOS."

It will certainly show your HS partition/disk but it should also show others. I don't know if Mojave does this but more recently there is a small phrase you can click on - something like "show other locations" or "show all locations" that would then list all possible targets. Are you saying you see nothing other than your High Sierra disk as an option to select?

Why you are still saying this? I've showed, and tested, two days ago that Apple still offers High Sierra for download and you can download it by multiple ways.

Btw, Apple still offers for download all past macOS releases since Yosemite.

You can use installinstallmacos.py:

Or you can also download from Apple Support via browser/App Store, following the Apple Support instructions below:

P.S.:

Just confirmed that you can successfully get High Sierra today:

Screen Shot 2022-06-15 at 13.28.29.png

Obviously I can't open it since I'm running BigSur right now:

As Alex said, install High Sierra and run the Mojave Installer from High Sierra and install to another HDD / SSD.

The GTX680-is-no-metal-message is an error. All Kepler GPUs will be ignored by the Mojave installer Boot Stick (so called createinstallmedia stick (as the cli tool inside the installer is called so).

The command is also written on the linked Apple site

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

where MyVolume is the name of your USB thumb drive.

But with Mojave you are forced to run the MacOs Installer App thru High Sierra - because of the installer flaw with Kepler GPUs.

You can also do it, but if your card is not flashed, you won't select your createinstallmedia Mojave installer, no BootPicker.

You have to use a trick to boot it - you will need to erase the disk you want to install Mojave, then remove all other bootable disks from your Mac Pro or you won't boot the createinstallmedia Mojave installer since the Mac Pro firmware will scan for any bootable disks and USB have the lowest priority at boot time.

If you keep any bootable disks inside, your Mac Pro won't boot the createinstallmedia Mojave installer.

Thanks for your patience. On Mojave now. Just OCLP to go.
