Here, i assume the case will mirror the magnet locations within the ipad itself.

Yeah I saw that, but was wondering if there isn't magnets on the side... where the old smart cover would connect

Ah ok, not 100% sure tbh but there have been users who have spoken to Apple reps who have confirmed a smart cover is coming so i assume there is magnets along the side.

I... think I prefer it? What drives me nuts on the now-old keyboard, is that empty void of nothingness on the left when holding it, that squishes down -- butted up squarely against the keyboard itself that doesn't budge. I end up either leaving my fingers flat on the back so I can reach the keyboard as I feel I have a better grip -- and I don't need to hold as tight for it -- or I just yank the thing off, which is a double win really, the keyboard is probably just as heavy as the iPad itself.

I think for the sinister folks out there, holding it upside down would be your rightside up? Seems the Face ID would work, the speakers should adjust based on the accelerometer, so you should be good to go.

So, to be clear, the new smart folio does not have a removable cover? Is there a way to have a smart cover (without the back) that magnetically attaches/detaches?

Apparently there isn’t, which is weird because the folio (without the keyboard) doesn’t need power so there is no reason for it to cover the back of the device (where the connector is now located). I think it’s clear that Apple either thinks that covering the back is way more important for both the plain case and the keyboard or that the Pencil magnets are not compatible with the keyboard so there was no option for apple to use the sides for both accessories. There is also a chance that the device’s new shape and thinness makes it way more difficult to pick up without a back cover (even with the camera bump).

Personally, I prefer having the back and part of the sides covered but at the same time find it weird that you end up with the keyboard sticking out of the back. Let’s hope that similarly to the old keyboard the keys are hard enough that even when you hold the device they aren’t pressed

One thing to note is that with the current ASK the iPad can be attached to the smart connector but the keyboard won’t work unless the ipad is also “docked” in the notch above the keyboard. I presume the folio keyboard will work similarly. So, if you’re carrying the ipad with the folio closed, the keyboard is not active because it’s not docked in the notch. Likewise, if you fold over the front cover all the way around to the back and hold it that way.

Or maybe the camera bump is more pronounced and won't allow the iPad to lay flush against a table. Both the Folio and keyboard folio cases help reduce the extent that the camera protrudes.

Well, we hope the keyboard is not active when it lays flat on the back of the iPad.

However, what concerns me is the fact the keyboard laying flat on the back of the iPad is facing out:-
If you lay the iPad down on a surface that very surface will have contact with the keyboard.
I can just imagine initially typing on a table with food & drink. At some point you stop typing as you wish to use the pen for either writing or drawing. You then place the keyboard at the back of the iPad and place it down on the table.......

And here now shows the problem:-
After writing/drawing you pick up the iPad, swing the keyboard back around and place it back on the screen for closure. However, what you did not notice was that whilst the keyboard was on the back of the iPad facing outwards it picked up crumbs and liquid from the table. Now you have a dirty/wet keyboard and equally iPad screen!

You are absolutely correct and that’s a valid concern...but it’s not novel to this new folio keyboard. That same concern still exists with the current ASKs. Not only in the example that you describe, but also when using the current ASKs in keyboard mode. The face-down side is what actually touches the screen when the iPad is closed. At least with these folio keyboards the face-down side in keyboard mode is still outward facing when closed.

No different than the last ASK 12.9. The old one the lap with microfiber laid down on the desk and collected crap. When you closed the keyboard that flap would lay across your screen.

In the video with the Phil Schiller voiceover, the keyboard is shown flipped around behind the device. I too was worried so I scoured every image/video they shared.

From all of the pics, I still can’t see how this folio would work if you just want to read or hold the iPad without actually using the keyboard. With the current ASK, it can flip behind the iPad just right but the new one looks like you would be holding the actually keyboard if you folded it behind the iPad.

The keyboard will probably work the same way it does on the Microsoft surface. When you fold it back, it deactivates the keys

Doesn’t bother me in the least to be honest, I’m still buying one.

Yes when you flip it round the keys will be outwardly facing. I’ll either hold it by the flat edge, where there are no keys. Or where the keys are, I don’t think they’re so hard and have such a large protrusion that it’ll bother me.

Of course we’ll have to wait and see, but my money is on, there’s no way on gods green earth the keys will be active when flipped back. That would rank among the biggest Apple oversights since a mouse you can’t use while charging. I just don’t see it happening.

The original ASK only had the keys active when ‘docked’ in the typing position, so I am highly confident that the new one will do the same.

Does this all obsolete use of the Leather Sleeve for 10.5"?

Pretty much, yeah. I suppose the leather sleeve would technically cover more of the unexposed sides and as the 10.5” has the same dimensions it’s still compatible. And I’d expect the iPad plus folio to fit in the sleeve together.

But really, the folio should be enough protection compared to the sleeve. Personal choice I suppose.

The 11” is a hair taller than the 10.5, so that may be an issue.

I did consider that, but my wife’s got my 10.5”/keyboard/Pencil/Sleeve now, I just couldn’t get used to the smaller size.

I think there’s probably enough extra space in the current sleeve to accommodate the 11” Pro. I could be wrong of course, I’ve not got the rule out so far. But eyeballing it, it looks like there might be enough space.
I’m sure someone will be able to confirm whether it does or not come Wednesday.

The longer edge is longer, the shorter edge is shorter, if that helps.

Just to confirm - while being held in portrait the 11” Pro looks to be slightly wider than the 10.5”, but the 10.5” is slightly shorter?

Yeah the 11” is 3mm shorter and 4.3mm wider.
I still think it’d squeeze into the sleeve, it accommodates the iPad with Smart Keyboard attached comfortably. That’s bound to add more than 4.3mm to the width of the thing, well, maybe :D. But we’ll find out soon enough.
