Will Face ID work in a pitch black environment?

Many nights in bed my wife is sleeping and I cant get any sleep, so I reach out in the dark to my phone and earphones to tune up some radio or music. Touch ID obviously works fine, but with Face ID... I fear I would need to turn the lights on?

My wife would throw the iphone out of the window if I woke her up just to activate the damn thing! :)

Face ID will work in the dark. 'Face ID uses infrared to scan your face, so it works in low lighting conditions and in the dark. The TrueDepth camera also has what Apple calls a "Flood Illuminator," aka an infrared light that illuminates your face in the dark so the dot map and the infrared camera can do work together. '
