More importantly, how long, do you think, until the MBP sees a substantial enough redesign that it gains a lot of the MB's new features, like magnetic latch and integrated keyboard?

Because as it stands right now, the MBP is really just like an old PowerBook with a few extras stuck on (I'm not talking about internals, where it's obviously completely different).

I don't think the mbp will have an integrated keyboard (wouldn't backlight be like almost impossible?)

They could just put the fibre optics inside each key, no? If not that, then there must be a way to do it.

I think the next Rev of the MBP will have a magnetic latch. (Probably released at the Paris expo).

I too was rather surprised that not much was changed with regards to the aesthetics of the PowerBook design, when Apple made the switch over to Intel.

Unlike the current MBP and previous PB/iBook the new MacBook's keyboard is not removable from the upper case, and is integrated in it.

If done properly it can help keep the overall machine thinner/lighter since there doesn't need to be any form of mechanical retention for the KB. But like everything else in life it's a compromise you can't replace the KB if it fails...

I believe we will se followig major changes:
- 17" MBP 0.9" thin
- 15" MBP gets FW800, a 8x DL SuperDrive and a 68 Wh battery.
- All MBP's get magnetic latches and integrated, backlit keyboards.
- All MBP's get a resolution upgrade (1680x1050 and 1920x1200 :D )
- 17" remains 8x DL drive, which also is made possible for 15", due to thinner SD's available.

This may be crazy, but is there a possibilty that they won't have an iSight on top of the screen, but integrated into the screen, as it has been rumored is now possible?

I think Apple rushed into the first Intel machines (releasing them 6 months ahead of schedule) and just used the current Powerbook cases. There will probably be extra features added to it later on.

Absolutely. I've always maintained that the currect design is an interim one.

I hope to see some refinements like megapixel camera, even higher res screens...but I would really like to see built in GPS, external OLED(?) screen for alarms and other info, OLED keys to program per application (perhaps functions keys first), and two buttons ;)

I don't think it will ever look that much different, just the magnetic latch, and will get slightly thinner.

What can they actually change its a laptop

We will probably start to see a lot of redesigns next year...

The iMac will be three years old in September....

If they don't do anything this year, the Power Mac will be three years old in June...

Both the MacBook and MBP are working off of four year designs...

So next year could be quite fun.

Not sure I agree on this view. They could change quite a few things. There were rumours of carbon fibre enclosures for the 'new' powerbooks at one stage.

ive heard rumors about this as well. It would be a massive leap in technology, but i think the cost to produce and maintain it at the moment would be too high. Something to look forward to, though.

I trust J.Ives will keep us wowing with the new products coming out. It can't be too long, because the PB/MBP lineup does look very similar to what it has over the last few years. I like the current one, but i want to see something new.

Yikes! I hadn't realised that so many of the designs were so darn old.

Really, take a look at what the PC market is like.

PowerBooks, iMacs and PowerMacs all look amazing (still, after all these years). What are you complaining about?

I thought it did have a magnetic latch. When I close the lid, the two things are magnetically pulled to connect to the casing.
