I really couldn't go back to a desktop at all after having my notebook. I don't know where the chair is to my desk anymore since I do my work anywhere that's not at my desk. I love portability and can't see myself ever going back to a desktop for my main computer.

All the times I've tried, I just can't rely on an underpowered laptop as my main system. I think I just gave up on that idea. For me, they're best as a secondary system.

I also only have my C2D MBP, but I can tell you that I will not be going back to windows assuredly for a LONG time! I can't even stand to use windows anymore, I hope leopard really wows me and kills of any possible, even minute possibility that I would ever switch back.

Well in what ways are they underpowered for you? I can understand if you need a much bigger hard drive or something that relates to what you do daily. It might be interesting to see what others do that relates to why they picked a desktop over a notebook.

Personally I use my computer for web browsing, writing, listening to music, and keeping in constant access to my email. I could definitely be fine with a 1 ghz powerbook with plenty of ram and have everything I need. My itunes library is 20 gb's and most of my movies are on an external hard drive. I think that currently, the average user can get the same use out of a laptop than they would of a desktop.

If I were constantly editing high quality video files or did very frequent recordings I could see myself leaning towards a desktop. I use my computer for a lot of the day and love the conveniance of being able to do my work in bed, in the library, or at the office. Mileage definitely varies per person though.

How many? Technically about 25. I think I still "own" the pile of trash sitting on my driveway outside. Been meaning to haul it to the city recycle plant. Quite a few 68K Macs out there along with printers tape backups, monitors and so on. Even some Sun workstations and PCs in the mix. It's been rained on a few times so I doubt much of it still works

How old are you? Just wait. At age 40 or 50 your eyes will not be so good and the small screen will be useless. But even with good eyesight some things just require a larger screen. Try Final Cut Express in a 13" MB screen. No way will all those controls and tracks fit. Even Photoshop on a small screen is not fun.

Odd statement from a Mac user. In the Apple line the "guts" of the MBP and iMacs are identical as are the guts of the Mini and MB. (OK not quite "identical" but really close) I think Apple did this to save on the design cost and the amount of drivers to write and support. Only the Mac Pro does not have an equivalent notebook.

"under powered" is the wrong term. "Small screen and disk" is a better description.

I'm 20 Chris. I won't lie to you and say that I do everything strictly on a 13 inch screen. Though it's the perfect size for me, I do hook it up to an external monitor at work so I can look over multiple press releases (I work in public relations) and edit them.

As I mentioned, everyone's mileage will vary with their usage but I still believe the average person doesn't need the power of a desktop. I'm sure tons of users need more, but others don't.

I'd be curious to know what everyone else thinks.

How many do you use on a regular basis? I know a lot of people try to squeeze out every bit of life from their older macs.

Current line up:

12" 1.5ghz PB
Mac Mini 1.5ghz PPC G4 plus 23" ACD last rev.
Powermac G4 733mhz DA
iBook 700mhz G3
Cube 450mhz G4
iMac Snow 500mhz G3

I'm selling the iBook to a good friend; loaning the Powermac to another good friend; trading the iMac to another good friend for work barter and keeping the broken Cube. I use the PB and mini as main computers.

i just bought my macbook to replace my dual 2.0 ghz g5. it's what i usually do; i sell a computer, or get rid of it somehow, and get another (sold a cube as well). in addition to the macbook, i have an ibook g4 (not a laptop, i know) and maybe a g3 imac somewhere in storage. i'm currently craving an imac or a macbook pro to go along with my macbook.

Why?

At most i use 3 systems at once. A laptop for portability, a desktop for power and a server for downloading stuff all night and sharing out big hard drives.

I don't personally see the need for any more. I mean, why not just use 1?

Up until 3 months ago I had a 17" iMac G5 and a 12" 1.2GHz iBook with 60G HD. The systems worked well, but I found it a pain to have duplicates of things. I sold them both along with a 4 yr old sony vaio laptop to finance my new 15" C2D MBP. I didn't have to put any money towards it. I love it! It has the power (well more actually) and screen resolution of the G5, but the portability of the iBook. I have no regrets :)

As well as my 15" Macbook Pro (which has a shiny [well, matt] 1920x1200 screen now just like the 23" Cinemadisplay..who said these things just don't have enough screen?):

I have a Mac Mini attached to my HDTV - currently running Windows to watch HDDVDs.. the sooner UDF2.5 is available for mac, the better..

I have a G5 tower running OSX Server which may soon be retired by an Airport Extreme (if I can find somewhere to do the email storage)

I have two G4 17" PBs. One has a broken screen and the other is gathering dust. I just wish they weren't so unwieldy.... the display on the one which isn't broken flickers ominously sometimes suggesting that something is on the way out...It's my emergency backup Mac.

I used to have a G4 Mac Mini (as HTPC), but that was recently donated to a teacher friend of mine to help teach disadvantaged kids. I'm told it's been very well received there.
