I tend to update every three years. Usually by then, the phone is on it's last legs. My current phone is 4 years old, so I waited a bit longer to upgrade, since I bought this one out-right. I'm planning on getting an iPhone 11 by the end of the years.

I only upgrade once I have few other choices available to me. I had a 5s, which I loved, but I recently upgraded to an 8 Plus because it made sense to upgrade instead of replacing a dying battery in a phone that Apple will not support for much longer. I hope I can get 6 years out of my 8 Plus.

I am never going to upgrade ever again. I have 3 iPhone SE devices, 2 of them already rooted in box, the other one on iOS 11 as my daily driver. I can unlock the full potential of a 114 gram device that is half the weight of the 2019 iPhones and has much more capability with 4x the sound spectrum and a 3.5mm jack.

Apple News and Apple TV are going to crash and burn, and Apple is forcing these bigger and heavier devices on us all to subliminally nudge it’s customer base into adopting more subscriptions and staring at their bigger screens more, and losing more sense with the world around them. Apple AR glasses are the next thing they will use to enslave us all to their subscriptions.

I choose to Rebel against that, and I have wrestled back control of my life, by having a phone that caters to what I want to do, instead of having a phone that I have to comport myself to.

I don’t plan to keep Apple TV plus After the free trial. I refuse to be that deep into the Apple ecosystem too. The only Apple product I plan to keep is a phone. No MacBook, iPad etc.

Still using my iPhone SE. No reason to upgrade. Thing still runs like a champ, especially on iOS 13.2. Waiting for Apple to release a revised SE, hopefully with the same dimensions.

I’ve upgraded every year since the 4S. I waited 18 months to upgrade to the XS Max from my X, which my daughter is currently using. I told myself last year I was going to upgrade every 2 years, but that ended this year. I love my XS Max, but the urge to upgrade is getting stronger as my birthday is next month, and I feel I deserve a late Birthday and Christmas gift after my kids get their Christmas presents.

I’ve even tried buying new cases (which haven’t appealed to me so I’ve returned them) and not jumping on the beta wagon to make my phone feel new, but the urge to upgrade get stronger every week. We’ll see how I feel after Christmas.

I've upgraded every year since iphone 3gs. Except for the redesigns, I usually regret it a few months in.

I always resell just before the new iphone releases to maximise the money I get back before I upgrade.

I have to learn to exercise restraint cos I find iphone upgrades are pretty much always slight increments and its daft to upgrade. I had the idea of upgrade phone 1 year and upgrade the watch the next

I upgrade when I'm in need of a new phone. I really didn't care for the new 11 lineup when my X was functional. Actually I still don't! I would have been happy with the X for much much longer, but it died... So I bought an 11 pro.

I am ok with waiting short amounts of time for specs/features I really care about, but I find it usually makes no sense to wait. I waited 2 months back in 2013 for the Late 2013 rMBP 13", that was worth it.

Its crazy to me how everyone wishes to upgrade every year. I have an XR and my wife got an 11. I used for 3-4 days and honestly couldn't find any reason to upgrade. Sure the night camera is amazing but I can't even recall when I wanted to take a photo at night and really missed out. How long do you keep your current phones for?
There are no reasons to upgrade every year.
But I’m doing it just for passion

I usually do every 2 years but I can’t really see anything that would entice me to upgrade from my XR. I don’t take enough pictures to care about the camera. The screen is big. The speed is plenty fast. Think il be holding onto this one for a while.

I upgraded every year up until the 8 Plus. Since then the price has gotten out of hand relative to the improvements/features offered in the newer models. So I'm at a little over 2 years with the 8 Plus now.

That’s what I did last year. I upgraded my S2 to a S4 and kept my X for 18 months before upgrading to the XS Max. I’m going to upgrade my daughter’s X to the 11 for Christmas and I’m hoping my new case help me keep my XS Max until next year.

I was hoping the modem in the 11 Pro Max would be better than the XS Max and give me a big reason to upgrade. After a few carrier updates since September, my XS Max hasn’t dropped as many calls as before with iOS 12. I just may keep my XS Max for 10.5 more months.

Never seen a dropped call on any of my iPhone recently.

1. iPhone 5S April 2014 (T-Mobile)
2. iPhone 6S Plus October 2015 (T-Mobile)
3. iPhone 8 Plus November 2017 (Verizon)

Unless something really stands out, my plan is to keep the same phone until it can’t run any of the current apps, otherwise I’ll just replace the battery.

I had just like you an Iphone 8 plus but its size is a real issue...it fell out of my pocket when biking back from work, and I realized it only after being home, thanks to Locate my phone i could find it and rode back where it was but too late...dozens of cars had run over it. Now I have my daughter’s SE and it can easily fit in my pocket with less risk of falling from it

How can a 2 year old Iphone X die?

Oh, that is terrible, macmahon70! I have always worried about dropping mobiles. I agree the 8 Plus is not the easiest thing to carry around as it is both larger and heavier than my old 5s. I dropped the 8 Plus on asphalt a few weeks ago. Luckily, it was in a faux leather case that was inside a thin faux leather handbag. It only fell about 4 ft., but it frightened me. It does not appear to have been harmed in the least, thank heavens. If you have home owners insurance, your phone may be covered under it. I think Apple Care covers the phone for 2 years. I have not purchased it for my mobile. I did for my Mac, but thankfully, I never had to use it.

I've been averaging two years, but am looking to stretch that to three years.

So if I can hold out, I'd get the new iPhone for 2022.

Two or even three years is not long. Buying a phone for $650-$1000 or more is the equivalent to purchasing a brand new washer and dryer every two or three years. Spending $1K on a mobile phone, is the equivalent of a washer, dryer, and refrigerator. Anyone who had to replace those appliances every 2-3 would complain LOUDLY. Do not misunderstand me, I love my iPhone, but I think Apple, like any other business, will make and sell as much product for as much money as they can squeeze out of the consumer. If demand for this sort of rabid iPhone acquisition declined, so would prices. I imagine there are a lot of folks who work for Apple who are laughing and saying "the sky is the limit. Let us see if we can get them to go $2K for phone in another 2-3 years. We will be laughing all the way to the bank."

For me, the increase in price and the loss of carrier subsidies radically changed the upgrade cycle. It's just not a cost-benefit tradeoff that I can justify for myself.

This. It‘s funny because here I could explain all the reasons for upgrading from last years phone to best years. However when my colleagues or even my husband ask my what’s the difference between my new phone and the old one I don’t really have much to say lol
