Just upgraded to iPad Pro 12.9 from iPad Air 2 last week and might sell Air 2 because I already have an 8 inches Android tablet (just much ike a Mini 4). Or should I keep Air 2? It is hard decision for me....
Ha! I'm in a similar situation. I have a 12.9 iPP (up from an Air 2) and supplement my tablet usage with a Samsung GTab Pro 8.4. (rooted and cleaned to work quite well) I'm waiting for the successor of the iPad Mini 4 before making my decision. A Mini Pro and/or a price-dropped Mini 4 are what I'm looking at.

I have the IPP 9.7 and the iPad Mini 4. I use the IPP more like a laptop. I find it clunky to use as a reader when on the go.

I use the mini mainly to read. It helps that you can grip it with one hand and you don't have to fumble as much to take it out of your bag and start reading, which can be an issue if you are in a crowded place. The iPad mini is also great for light gaming since the size is just right for a handheld console. I always grab the mini when I am at home.

I've also used the IPP to prepare for classes (I do some tutoring) but I switch over to the mini when I'm actually teaching.

My biggest issue with a Kindle for reading is the lack of light. It's great for the beach, but not so much for reading in bed and not annoying my husband. I hate having to add the book light, and if I'm gonna do the Kindle with lighting, I might as well get an iPad.

I don't usually read for hours at a time or anything (puts me to sleep), so I wonder how much it would really bother me.

Would an original mini be too old to load a Kindle app on? I need to upgrade on of my granddaughters' iPads to a mini 2, and I could just take her old mini if I was just going to use it for reading/recipes, etc.

We don't have internet where we live and since I've gone to unlimited data, I can't use my phone as a hotspot, so I either have to use it for really basic stuff, or get a mini 4 with wifi and 4g/lte.

Decisions, decisions...

I have the 12.9" pro and an iPhone 7+. I am really considering an iPad mini 4 mainly to use for reading in bed (I want to be able to comfortably hold it in one hand). I'm sure I'd wind up doing other stuff like checking social media pages, playing a few games, etc. that I do now on my phone.

I LOVE my iPP, and even my Air 2 was bigger than I wanted for just reading and stuff, so I wouldn't want the smaller pro; just wondering if it's stupid to get a mini, or if I should just get a Kindle. Guess I'm just itching to buy something new...
Just got the 10.5, I also have a Mini (2), among other tablets.

No Mini here, but I am hoping a Mini Pro will still be announced sometime in the next year. I'd love that for commuting. If not, should Best Buy offer 128gb Mini 4's for 200-225, I'd scoop one up immediately.

I have the 12.9, the mini 4, and the iPhone SE. Each one is "just right" for its application. The mini makes for a beautiful e-book reader.

That seems like a nice setup. It's hard for me to go back to the SE an therefore the mini and even normal sized iPads seem to have less use

Wow we are in complete agreement. I have the exact same setup as you, except I'm still on the mini 3. Each product is perfect for its purpose: 12.9 for creation, productivity, and immersion; 7.9 for casual consumption especially e-reading and low key note-taking; SE because it is still the perfect size for a phone.
It's tragic these are the devices Apple updates the least.

I agree it is a nice combination but I am not feeling the tragedy. I tend to use devices until the magic smoke comes out and that does not happen very often with my Apple products.

My SE replaced my 4S - which is now serving as the “home phone”, and the 4S replaced my original iPhone. My original iPad is sitting here on my desk feeding me news updates and being a very elegant clock thanks to Emerald-Sequoia’s lovely Observatory.

So, speaking only for myself, Apple’s updates have always been pretty much right on time. I was certainly ready when the SE came out - but I was hardly inconvenienced. It has been less than two years since the original iPad Pro, and would certainly not have felt the need to upgrade in that space of time.

I have a second generation mini, though its not being used. My purchase of the iPad Pro was intended to replace that model. I may give it to my wife and let her use it, instead of the first generation iPad mini she currently has.

I did till yesterday when Best Buy gave me a $150 GC for my Mini 2, I could not pass that up.

No way to describe the Mini, it absolutely killed most any android tablet I had or tried.

I have the Air 2, a Kindle PaperWhite, Galaxy S7 Edge phone, and now a new Galaxy Tab S2 8" tablet. I like the S2 for it's size - similar to the mini - and it works great for e-reading. The PaperWhite has sat idle since I got the Air 2 and now the S2.

I have the new Pro 12.9 and was also thinking about getting the mini for work and in bed reading. I'm hoping that a mini with pencil support comes out soon because I would get that immediately. If not, I'll wait until holiday sales to hopefully get the mini 4 in the $200 range or less. Is there a chance of a new mini being introduced with the new iPhones?

I may have been unclear in my wording. I too use my devices until they have run out their usefulness, or until a newer device has a feature I find particularly beneficial (which doesn't happen often). So my qualm is not so much that these devices aren't frequently updated; it's that they go so long without usual updates that it becomes unclear whether or not they will ever be updated, and when they are updated, they don't receive some of the newer (particularly beneficial) features. They are 3rd rate citizens. Except the 12.9, it's more of a 1.5 rate citizen. But I fear too for its long term future.

I hear you, but I think that is something we do to ourselves. Just because phones get updated every year does not mean that there is something wrong if <some-non-phone-device> goes longer than that without an update.

I think we should expect longer cycle times and stop chewing our fingernails.

I have an iPad Mini 2 and a 9.7 iPad Pro. I don't use either one all that much anymore. I bought the Mini 2 new in December that year it was released and I bought my iPad Pro in January this year.

I did go out and pair the Mini 2 with my new Accords bluetooth for a future road trip even though I mostly use my 6S+/iPod Classic for music in the car.

Well the SE was an off schedule update too. We partially overreact. But at the same time Apple does kill products from time to time.
