It was easy for me. I had the 6 Plus and 7 Plus, wife has the XS Max. I don't like the bigger form factor, went back down in size when I got the XS and was perfectly happy with it, so I stuck with the 13 Pro. I'm 6'6" with big hands, and still like the smaller form factor better - easy to one-hand, smaller and more convenient to carry around. I don't consume a lot of video content on my phone, don't need the extra battery life of the Pro Max (the Pro easily gets me through a day), and there's no camera upgrade in the Pro Max over the Pro this year.

I did the same as you and downsized in terms of the physical phone size too. I had an 8 Plus which was a great phone, but upgraded to an iPhone 12 last year and immediately preferred the larger screen in a much more manageable package. I used to have to take the 8 Plus out of my pocket when sitting down and in the summer the extra bulk when wearing shorts meant I often gave the 8 Plus to my wife to put in her handbag or I left it at home. It’s nice to have choice in the range I think.

Can you use the 13 Pro Max with one hand (for example for texting) as with the 13 Pro?
Personally, yes, I can, and I don't have huge hands. The "one-handed" keyboard option (shifting the entire keyboard to the left or right) makes this a little easier. It's still a bit of a pain, though - due mostly to the 13PM's weight - and usually I find myself texting with two hands. But, anyway, point is, yes: it's possible.

I had the 7+ and then the XSMax and was definitely getting the max this time. BUT since I didn't pre-order I started looking locally on day three of the release and I am old and have a limited driving range. My local store had a Pro in box in the store and it was graphite, the one color I definitely didn't want. LOL. So now I have a graphite 13 Pro and am happy as a clam at high tide. For me the deciding factor turned out to be availability and it was a good decision as I got the last one they had and as of now they still have no idea when they will be able to get more. The color decision ended up being made when I realized color doesn't matter one iota since I put it in a case on day one and it stays in a case so it can be any color I want at any time.

I have the 12 mini now and just ordered a 13 Pro. My concern is that, as in the past with other recent Pros, the 13 Pro will be too big and heavy and that I will return it. The Max is not even on my radar. Ever since the phones have added the glass backs they’ve become heavier (and perhaps less fragile). I like to read on my phone lying down in bed and ended up returning both the 11 and 12 pros because they were just too heavy. Also, I take my phone with me when I run (for now I have a GPS AW and want to be reachable in case of emergency). The mini has been GREAT to take on runs and I fear that the Pro will be too large and heavy to carry with me comfortably. We shall see. My hope is that the camera features/improvements make up for the size and weight. Other factors are battery (killing me on the 12 mini) and the keyboard size (make typos constantly).

Same with me.

I have the same concerns over the weight and size.

I haven't switched to the 13 pro yet. I'm still thinking about it.

I don't and I don't know anyone that needs to walk around with a phone in their pocket all day lol
I don’t think anyone was allowed to walk around in Australia nowadays.

That aside, many people in many circumstances and professions walk around with their phones all day, and unless you have a purse a pocket is the easiest place to stow it. Some people do use belt clips, but then you usually have a bulky Otterbox style case which doesn’t work with a suit or scrubs.

I initially bought the 13 Pro Max and kept it for 2 weeks before trying the 13 Pro and I much prefer the size of the latter.
I don't miss the extra screen real estate and event though I was afraid about of the battery life of the 13 Pro, I am actually ending my days with 35-45% battery left while it was 65-70% with the Pro Max (not useful since I charge overnight).

Overall I have absolutely no regrets switching from the bigger one to the regular Pro, if that can help ...

This was my exactly conclusion. I had both the Pro and Max side by side for 2 weeks trying to decide. I literally lost sleep thinking about it but ultimately chose the Max. Coming from a 11 Pro Max and XS Max before that everything on the Pro screen seemed "small" to me. I loved holding the Pro its WAY more comfortable to use but doing my daily tasks (texting, email, social media, watching Youtube) I missed the bigger screen. The Max is obviously more cumbersome and heavier but I think I'm willing to make that sacrifice for that screen and battery life.
Update: I was dead set on keeping the Max but changed my mind. Yesterday I was holding my 2 year old son while trying to type a quick but urgent message to my wife on the Max one handed. I ended up dropping the phone on the concrete because its almost impossible to type one handed on the Max. Luckily there was no damage to the phone but I knew right in that moment that the smaller Pro is better for my lifestyle.

Same concerns for me with mini - battery and typos with two handed. Typing with one hand is far more better for me. That’s why I’m thinking about 13 and not 13 mini.

how many people here find it hard to decide between iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max?

Update: I ended up getting the 13 Pro Max... only to return it a week later.... and got the 13 Mini. :)
So I finally upgraded yesterday from an iPhone X to a 13 Pro. I’d dithered about the max having the amazing battery and the larger screen for reading emails etc etc. Now I’ve had it a day I can declare two things with certainty ( for me, of course …. five of you will have eight opinions between you ?) : first of all, battery is already incredible compared to the X so I certainly don’t feel I should have gone max just for that; secondly, even though you can feel them in the shops and find cans in the kitchen that weigh about the same to test it out at home ( did I just admit doing that?), in real life the Pro alone is enough of a weighty beast over the X to make me glad I wasn’t tempted to go large.
So there you go. My penny’s worth, if it helps anyone still deciding ?. Camera also a huge upgrade from X, and the refresh on the screen really is a cool thing. Oh….I went with the beautiful blue one. Goes with my Baltic blue Bose earbuds a treat!

Update: I bought the phone on Tuesday afternoon and charged it that night. Now Friday morning and apart from four 20 minute car journeys when it was connected to the car, it hasn’t seen power since, and it’s on 67%. Obviously all totally subjective, but to me, it is night and day from my X. Totally totally glad I didn’t get the Max to get the best battery life as this one is superb. It still feels much chunkier and denser (!) than my X though! I think the max would have been ridiculous for me. Good luck in your choice.

To me a phone should be mobile, i.e. being pocketable and one-handable. The Pro is the way to go.

For me one reason to not consider the max is the missing 7th line of icons on the homescreen.
I understand the math behind that due the widgets.
I have had the 6+ for three years and these extra icons were really a welcome bonus.
Speaking of extra icons: I really wish Apple would do something with the dock like infinidock. Give us more apps to choose from the dock where my thumb is all the time!! when holding the phone.

Which is not much popular opinion these days. I agree with you as right now I‘m using 12 mini. But worrying about battery is the only thing I’m not even thinking about mini because going with bigger device and bigger battery means it will last longer. I don’t want to spend another large sum of money to see 11% decreasing of Battery Health in less than a year. I know 13 mini would be better but this is something that worries me a lot. You can always replace battery a move on for another years but it just don’t make me sense this way. Sadly mini’s are pocketable and mobile but also are battery worrying. Personally.
