I have the 64GB 3G iPad (on the unlimited plan) and an unlocked iPhone 3GS on T Mobile prepaid unlimited text plan (no data). Most places I go have wifi so I use Skype on the iPhone to make calls. This works well for me. I also like how I'm not paying taxes on any phone plan, at least not directly.

I also have my iPhone 4. I like the ipad for use abroad and when I go airport etc. So I just buy the day passes when I need it for £2 a day lol.

i wish we had that option in the US! it would make the 3G ipad much more worth it here. i wouldnt pay $25 for a month of 3g on an ipad when im already paying $30 a month for my iphone data plan. its just ridiculous. a daily plan would be a much better option for me, if it were available here i may have bought the 3G model.

I have a 64 GB 3G iPad along with a 3GS iPhone that is running mywi along with a Verizon MiFi (for work). I have not activated the data plan on the iPad because I already pay for unlimited dats on the iPhone and mifi. I use wifi more than anything.

I got the 3G iPad because i wanted the flexibility of having a data plan if I needed it plus I wanted the gps chip to use the iPad for navigation...

I need to add to my original post... I have the iPad 3G and the iPhone 4 both on unlimited plans and I also have a VZW line my company pays for to test beta handsets and software. Right now I am playing with a new beta Android device running 2.2 and it's pretty nice but iOS 4 is still superior.

I pay for two unlimited data plans to ATT, because I use both my iPhone and iPad when traveling, and I'm not comfortable violating Apple's terms of service by jailbreaking. I imagine I am not unique.

Not to turn this into a debate about jailbreaking, but i have no problem violating apple's terms of service. Nor do many people on this site since there's a whole section devoted to it. But the main reason i jailbreak is for the ability to turn my iphone into a mobile hotspot. I feel that if i have an unlimited data plan, i should be able to use it on my iphone and my ipad. since thats not natively supported, i feel the need to jailbreak. Which is now explicitly legal. And if i ever need to bring it in for service i can just restore it to factory settings. no biggie.

Blackberry and iPad 3G, best of both worlds. Blackberry is on contract (£20 , or $30 ish). 400 mins, 'unlimited texts' and 'unlimited internet', with their standard fair use stuff. iPad wise, their used to be a £35($50) sim, with 12GB valid for 12 months, as a pay as you go sim.

I guess the one question that not everyone is answering is why you would buy two data plans if you already have a smartphone with a data plan.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and have been tethering my wifi iPad to my iPhone. To be honest, I still have an itch to upgrade to the 3G iPad, though, if for no other reason than (i) I can afford it and (ii) it's a little bit less convenient to have to fire up mywi everytime I want to get online on my iPad. Not very compelling reasons at all, so that's why I haven't yet taken the plunge. Can't say I won't ever do it though ...

iPad 3G & Nokia e71.
One Data Plan with 5 GB / Month for 21 Euros. (o2 Germany)
Multicard: two SIM Cards, one I had to cut to the right size for the iPad.
(They do have Multicard Contracts with MicroSIMs, now.)

Works great. The phone is a battery king and great for all basic mobillity things, inkl. email and quick browsing of stuff.

I have an iPad 3G and an iPhone, the thing is that when the iPad launched here the carriers gave a free "unlimited" data plan for a month, since the iPad has only been here for a few weeks I still use my free data plan :D

I dont know what its like in the USA. But in Canada, some iPhone 4 carriers (we have a choice of 3 or unlocked) have a deal until the end of Sept. Normally you get 500 mb for $25, but if you jump on this deal, you can get 6G for $30 which carries over until the end of your contract.

If I got an iPad, I could tether to the iPhone and I bet I would never use up the 6G in a month.

Was thinking of getting an iPad in addition to my iPhone 4. I would use the iPad for surfing the net around the house, for most games/pics/vids.

Keep the smart phone smart!

500mb for $25??? how much is that american?

Just bought an iPhone 4 and I have had the 3G iPad since "late April." Right now the iPad has unlimited 3G (grandfathered in) and the iPhone the DataPlus 200MB plan ($45/month total). Since this is my first month with my iPhone, I'll see how data usage goes with this setup. I'll probably change it up to reduce my bill at some point, but I am hesitant to change the iPad because then I can never go back to unlimited 3G. I have gone over 2GB already once in the 3+ months I've had 3G on it.

I recognize your point of view, but I believe that Apple has a legally enforceable right to contractually limit the use of its products, and to impose contractual penalties for unauthorized use, such as vitiating the warranty or withholding support. I respect Apple's rights, and I am not as comfortable as many others are with violating them. I'm not telling anyone else what to do, but since you seemed interested in other people's decisions, I thought I'd share the rationale for mine.

My reasons:
1. I can afford 2 data plans and now I don't want to lose unlimited.
2. I don't wanna jailbreak.
3. I don't wanna drain my iPhone battery.
4. Keeping the devices independent is more elegant to me.

I have an unlocked 3g iPhone on Tmo family plan with no data plan for $10/mo, so I got the 3G 32gb ipad with ATT unlimited data. Since the 3g iPhone is getting no love from Apple anymore, I may get a used 3GS and unlock and run 4.0FW.
I'd rather have dedicated data on the ipad than the iphone.

as far as jailbreak/unlock, I have no problem using other carriers on my iphone. I pay for every service it uses. hopefully some competition for ATT in US will shake up the scheme apple and att have enjoyed for years.

That isn't even the cheapest option, I have a sim from 3UK in my iPad, cost me £25 from Ebay and comes with 12 months service of 1GB per month. No additional monthly charges.

In US$ that's $39 for the year.

Okay I'll bite.

I'm in the UK, and £25 one-off payment to get 12 months of service with 1GB a month from 3 sounds like you've got a hacked SIM or you're not telling the truth or you're mistaken or something. I presume you're not lying and are not mistaken, but seeing as 3 don't offer that tariff anywhere, it's just unbelievable. So... what happened there?
