Typically $145/month is the whole bill, which I pay. My mom is also on my plan.
She has a dumb phone with unlimited texting.
700 shared minutes.
Unlimited data for my line + unlimited texting.
I usually get away with paying Verizon every 2 months (as long as the payment is submitted the day before the second month (1 month, 30 days) I don't get charged a late fee)). For instance, my payment was due July 10th. As long as its paid by September 9th, I won't get charged a late fee.

Have 450 minutes, unlimited SMS, and 3GB of data with AT&T and expect my bill to be between $100 and $105 per month with taxes. I think 3GB should be enough for my needs most months but might go up to the 5GB plan to have some extra and also share it with my iPad 2 since it allows tethering.
AT&T, $80 a month, minimum everything except unlimited mobile to mobile. I use wifi everywhere I go and for my GPS, I use navigon, which is offline.
I still don't know if this applies to cell phone bills, but doesn't doing this hurt your credit?
Actually prepaying for 3 months from walmart is only $42/mo ($125.99) and walmart doesn't charge tax for California either.
Verizon Family Plan:
Includes 4 iPhones (two 4's and two 4S's) and 1 Droid 3.
1200 minutes, unlimited texting, both iPhone 4's had unlimited data plans, while the 4S's had the 2GB plans (still costs the same as the unlimited plans, for those that don't know), the Droid 3 also had a 2GB plan.
5 data plans in total. Can't forget about my two grandparents who are also part of our family plan.
We were paying close to $500 a month (we were paying $470).
We switched to the 6GB Share Everything plan and it has brought our monthly bill down to $370, which is a considerable difference.
I know that most people think the Share Everything plan sucks and is a cheap plan, but for our family it works out great and leaves TON's of data leftover at the end of the month that could be used for tethering (since it's free with the Share Everything plan), downloading, etc.
My brother uses maybe 300-500mb, my sister uses around 700-900mb, I use around 1-1.5gb, and both my parents use 35-150mb max. Adding up the MAXIMUM in that range of MB's and GB's adds up to a total of around 3GB of data a month in my family. With the 6GB Share Everything plan, we essentially have 3GB of spare data to use for whatever we please, while still saving us $100 a month.
So for most people, the plan will suck, but for my family, it's perfect.

$30 a month for prepaid plan. $250 in call/text credit (We never go close), $30 adds up seperately perr month and can be used for additional data/call packs. 500MB a month - enough except when on holiday & I teather, so I buy 2GB data pack then.

They were losing so many people due to lack of iPhone so I felt they gave us a steal to keep us on their network.

Only if you get REALLY far behind and they turn you in to collections. I know of a few people who cancelled their service and didn't pay the termination fees. Verizon turned them in to collections, which is obviously a given.

If you are just using one line it may make sense to go prepaid with straight talk to save money
That's exactly what my mom would say, which is why we were ecstatic when we added up all of our costs with the new plans and they turned out to be significantly cheaper for us.
