I have a 512gb because I got it for a good deal (few weeks old with pencil and keyboard for the same price as a new 64)... I think I use like 50gb at max, with a bunch of useless crap on there.

If I was buying brand new right now I'd only buy a 128gb. The old 64gb was not enough, but 128 definitely is.

My iPad also isn't my main device though, It's basically just my note-pad and in class computer for when I don't feel like packing the MBP. I have a 1tb MBP that I keep most stuff on, and a 10tb Pi NAS cloud system I built, as well as a 2tb time machine, so I've never really worried about storage constraints.

those who have iPads now what storage did you go for and has that been enough? will you get a higher capacity iPad for your next iPad?

I have a complete archive of Scientific American Magazine, dating back to its first publication in 1845. The whole thing takes 100 GB. With other two magazines I subscribed, the whole thing together exceeded 128 GB. So, I would need 256 GB at the very least. 512 GB preferable. 1 TB if I had money to burn.

Curious, what enclosure and drives are you using? Or is it just USB external?

I have a "proper" NAS with WD Reds but toying with a Pi for media backup.

I’ve always managed fine with 32GB but I don’t download big videos or take many photos at all with my iPad. Next time I’d probably go for 64GB just because. It’s very use case specific as to what storage one needs. They say more is always better but if you pay extra for more and never get close to using it, how was it "better"?

Using a SATA hat with a Pi 4 4gb and right now and just a single WD White 10tb drive. I went with the hat so I could add more down the line as I also use it for my Plex library (Pi isn’t my server though, I use a shield for that). I also use the Pi for Adblock, a torrent server, VPN and a few other features.

As far as my time machine goes, I have an Asus AC86U running Merlin that I use as one with a single 2tb Seagate drive.

If I had to do it again, I’d probably go for a more powerful SBC (like one of the Ryzen APU boards with a Vega 8) that could do 4K transcode and run that as my Plex server as well.

Now that I use my iPad much more than my MacBook, I need 512gb to be comfortable. The iPad is loaded with active and historical business files, extensive OneNote files, scores of technical manuals, kindle books, financial spreadsheets, and all my music. I also have a very few classic movies that I watch when bored in a hotel room. While only about half full, I would actually entertain 1TB if I upgrade in a couple of years.
