Other than for reboots, I turned my phone off for 24 hours in the middle of December, a smart phone fast as part of a book I was reading on cell phone addiction. The book cited studies saying that doing this can have a positive effect on the way we use our phones for upwards of two weeks, I think it said? I really should put the phone away again.
An interesting idea really! Something worth considering for sure.

To answer the initial question though, I only turn my iPhone off if there is a glitch/issues that needs to be fixed. Very very seldom though. It just seems easier to leave on all the time, and I like being reachable for some reason..

Off? It can be turned off? Why would you do that? o_O

extended on time is bad for any computer.

Only when I'm experiencing problems. A reboot is a pretty solid fix for most issues I have with iOS.

yep. same would be true for many folks. and if you turned it off from time to time the likelihood of issues goes down. but i'm talking like 20 minutes twice a month, not every night

What incentive does Apple have for making sure your battery lasts forever? Zero. It's suicide to them. That's why they say "it's fine" to leave the iPhone plugged in over night (when in reality it degrades it rapidly).

if you are going to go with that train of thought, what incentive is there for Apple to make removable batteries, even just removable by their techs. they should weld the batteries into the phone and make you buy a new phone when the battery is worn out. $299 and up is way better than $49-99 and many folks would just buy a new phone off the shelf for $799 and up. apple wins

Mine's on all the time, it's my primary contact for family, friends and clients. I'm one of those "zombies" because I text/email/social network while on the go. Mostly, because I have friends and clients all over the world, and we like interacting at the same time, or leave messages when the others are sleeping.

I really don't get the bashing of texting. It's akin to letter/note writing, just instantaneous.

Usually every few weeks to reboot, though sometimes I'll turn it off when working on a class project/homework.
