How often do you upgrade your IPad ?

I have a 1st gen iPad mini and just purchased a 9.7 iPad Pro. I only feel compelled to upgrade my devices when they're no longer operating to my satisfaction. My iPhone 5s was becoming slow and I wanted a better camera, so I upgraded to the iPhone 7. My iPad mini has really slowed down, to the point where I'm beginning to use my MacBook more frequently, so I finally fit the bullet and ordered the Pro.

iPad 2 > the "new" iPad > iPad Air 2

Will keep it as long as it is smooth enough as i see no reason to update. iOS doesnt even offer any special iPad features.

Sorta like a Computer this way. My MBP Retina from 2012 runs as smooth as when i bought it and the battery still lasts well over 5 hours

no set rules for me. just whenever.

my first ipad was ipad2, then upgraded to Pro 12.9. wont upgrade now until either the os gets painfully slow or the hardware gets a radical upgrade. and i mean radical.
So in all likelihood, thats me now for a fair few years to come. the current 12.9 is pretty future proof other than hardware gadgets :)
I envy you man. I've always been such a whore for this stuff i always blow my paycheck to get whenever new thing apple comes out with. I think we're finally hitting a point of diminishing returns though with iphones and ipads though. So I'm gonna try to just keep my existing stuff for as long as i can. When i got the 12.9 at launch and then apple updated the 9.7 to have a couple extra features, i didn't give a damn. Even when everybody else was up in arms over it getting their pitchforks ready, i was just like "meh...I've got a great device already that does everything i want it to and i don't even use what i have to its fullest extent. I'm good". Thats the first time I've said that.

I'll probably get the pro 2 just so i can hand my first pro down to my daughter (not gonna buy a new one just to give it to her! Come on now) but after that, I'm gonna try to keep it for as long as there are ios updates

Really not consistent and depends on my usage and what new devices bring

  1. iPad 3 June 2012
  2. iPad Air 2 October 2015 after iOS 9 made mine unusable.
  3. iPad Pro 9.7 March 2016 - had the Pencil
I really like that you stated the reasons next to the upgrades. Wish that would have been stated from the get go for everybody here. Would be interesting to see.

Mine:

Ipad 4 - trying out the iPad experience. Like it, but its so big

IPad Air - finally. It's more compact! I love it

IPad Air 2 - As someone that values his security and was having to input a complicated password multiple times a day to unlock my ipad, Touch ID did it for me

IPad Pro with pencil and keyboard - by now i had been using my iPad Air 2 for more than a year and it had become a full fledged laptop replacement, so i wanted a larger screen to make it usable for EVERYTHING i do. The pencil and keyboard made it so much better. Buying it was a no brainer

IPad Pro 2 - will probably get it even if it's minor spec bumps just so i can pass my existing pro down to my daughter, then...i wanna keep it for as long as possible. I don't foresee myself needing any more than that

You skipped what is arguably the best iPad ever made. I'm sorry but isn't it redundant to buy a new iPad every year. Especially now there as powerful as most laptops it's not like there obsolete in a year.
Considering developers usually cater to the MASS market and don't even try to take advantage of all the power of current hardware, yeah. The life of these things is pretty insane. Are there even a lot of apps that make use of the power of the air 2? Let alone the new pros?

Wouldn't be surprised if it's 3 years down the line before the pro feels like it's power is utilized to its full potential

iPad 4 ( bought on October 2012)> IPad Air 2( bought on May 2015) > IPad Pro 2 12.9 ( Will buy on May 2017)

I normally upgrade every year but I think 2017 will be the year I wait.

Other than some minor spec bumps on the 9.7" model I can't foresee what Apple can bring to the table that'll make me consider the next model(s) announced in March.

I first bought my iPad 3 (64 GB) in April 2012 and only yesterday did I bought the 9.7" iPad Pro (256 GB). Hopefully when the next generation of iPads is released they would include both a USB slot and a SD memory card slot.

Similar to some of the others here, none of the above. Unlike computers, my iPads have always seemed good/fast enough that I don't feel the need to replace them very often. I kept my 32 gig iPad 2 until I had a need for greater data speed, and moved up to LTE on a 32 gig iPad 4. I kept that until about a year ago when I bought the iPad mini 4 because my iPad was constantly full and I had a hard time streaming shows or loading videos. In retrospect, I should have bought a 64 gig iPad 4 instead of the 32. It that were the case, I would still be using it today. I did learn the lesson though, and bought the 128 gig version of the mini 4, so I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. Plus I got one of the new MacBooks last year and it has really replaced most of my iPad usage.

My history is a bit complicated, there's no real rhyme or reason to it, really.

Our kids were born in 2010 (the year of the iPad ;)) and 2011, for reference.

1. I got an original iPad 1 (16 GB, wifi) on clearance at 50% of the original price when the iPad 2 was released.

It was mainly used by the kids to watch videos (upgraded from a 32 GB iPod touch they were using before (my wife won the iPod touch in a raffle at work)). At the time we did not have a tv, so our toddlers would use the iPod touch and the iPad.

Skipped everything after that up until the iPad Air 1.

2. A few months after the release of the iPad Air 1, my wife needed one for work, so we got an iPad Air 1 128 GB Cellular model, and a keyboard case to go with it.

At that point, we had the original iPad and an iPad Air 1 in use.

3. At some point, an electronics chain here did a promo of 100 euros of the price of a base 16 GB wifi iPad Air, + 100 euros for trade-in of any tablet. So I traded in the original iPad 1 for a 16 GB iPad Air 1, for a total cost of 200 euros or so.

I wanted to get more storage, but since this was a kids iPad, and the 100 euro discount wasn't available on other models, we went with 16 GB and rolled with it. Got a cheap sturdy universal case for it.

4. Then, 6 months or so later, the same chain had a celebration for whatever reason, and they offered double trade-in value for any tablet (with purchase of a tablet more expensive than the trade-in value). By this time the iPad Air 2 was released. I checked the trade-in value and it was 175 euros X 2, which is more than I had originally paid for the 16 GB iPad Air 1, so I traded it in and got a 128 GB iPad Air 2 wifi (which was 50 euros of on top of that).

5. Last year we got a refurbished 128 GB iPad Air 2 Cellular, to replace my wife's iPad Air 1. The kids now use the iPad Air 1 and the wifi iPad Air 2, and my wife and I share the 4G iPad Air 2 and a Surface Pro 4 m3.

The iPad Air 2 is a great tablet, by the way, imho.

6. Future possible purchase: I'd still like to get an iPad Pro 12" (at least 128 GB + 4G), but prices are still too expensive, and waiting for a good refurb deal. We'll see how prices go.But any future iPad purchase will be to a 4GB RAM one, I learned that lesson.

I've had an iPad 2 for a longgg time. Had planned to upgrade when it lost iOS support (which was unforunetly this year despite the large number still in service and the fact that the identical Mini 1 was still being sold only a year prior), However Apple didn't have a compelling iPad for sale so I'm still rocking the two. Will get a new one hopefully in April after the new ones come out, if not I'll wait till 2018 - if not then no new iPad for me.

I upgraded almost annually from the original iPad to the Air 1, then did not upgrade until the 9.7 Pro. The speed and performance jump to the Pro was huge. Now it performs like a desktop. But I also have a 2016 MacBook and my work-issued computer is a Surface Pro 4. So what I grab depends on how I want to work and what I need to do. In any case I believe the 9.7 Pro will keep me happy for at least 3 years. I do upgrade my iPhone every year, and that is unlikely to change.

I voted when it no longer gets the latest OS. In reality though I don't care and don't upgrade until it dies.

Just got a mini 4, 128GB, LTE for Xmas and still use my iPad 4. It's getting a bit slow, but I'll just use it until it dies. My fiancé got my old mini 2 32 GB, LTE. Had the first iPad and sold it less than a year after buying it.

I don't really have a set schedule. All I know is that I haven't used my iPad in over a year. And I have zero urge to use it these days. iPhone and MacBook do just fine for me. The decline of the tablet market in my opinion is a clear reflection of stagnant innovation.

More than I should. I went from an iPad 3 to an Air. Then I went to an Air 2 because I gave my Air to my daughter. Recently I got an open box 9.7 Pro for less than I paid for the Air 2 (with the same 128 Gb storage), so I sold the Air 2. I should stop for awhile...
