All iPads How often do you upgrade your iPad?

I have the 10.5 iPad Pro and would love to upgrade to an 11” with Face ID (12.9 is too big for my purposes) but refuse to do so until it is equipped with mini-LED. iPad Pro should have come with OLED screen long ago considering the technology has been widely available and the exorbitant pricing on these models.

Yep. Having access to desktop Gmail on the iPad is very convenient.

Granted, that's something I usually only do on the M1 Pro. I think it probably uses a lot of RAM since it's glitchy/crash-prone on my 2017 Pro. Used it on the Pro 9.7 once and crashed/reloaded with every single batch operation.

I am more inclined to think it's CPU more than RAM... First gen pro does struggle on desktop gmail (let alone older iPads). 2017 pro is not that bad in my experience but not glitch free. My iPad mini 5 with A12 but only 3GB RAM instead is very smooth, as are my 2018 pros. Basically it's a similar experience to desktop YouTube on Safari ("coincidentally" from Google too...). A12 and above is really where things move from glitchy to smooth on these resource intensive sites (and in the rare instances where there are glitches they last less than a second).

Smoother and faster, yes.

Alas still prone to crashing/forced reload when doing batch operations: e.g. deleting hundreds of marketing emails, batch tagging/labeling and organization, etc.

Email organization and cleanup is the only reason I use the Gmail website. Otherwise, the built-in Mail app works just fine for me for checking/reading email.

true, even if I tend to do organization on Windows or Mac more often... I also use the iPad Safari for setting out of office messages (every day, often several times per day)

My work email is fairly well tamed (since I do that on my work desktop which I'm in front of 8 hours a day).

Unfortunately, can't say the same about my personal email. Before the iPadOS 13 update, I think I probably went years without cleaning up my personal email.

I still don't do frequent cleanup but at least it gets a scrub more often than before now that I don't have to get up and go to a desk or unearth the laptop from its bag when the whim hits me.

I work from home most of the time (even before the pandemics) so every time I go out during work hours I need to set up an out of office alert saying when I am back (including when I teach at University, since that is a different job).
I use tags and filters a lot with my personal e-mails, including sometimes for cleaning it from all the newsletter than come without me asking for them (just because I bought something somewhere...). My personal email has 37 397 unread messages out of 57 024 ?

I moved on from iPad due to the OS becoming stale and no multi-user log on. I am interested in the 11 inch, but it really depends what iPadOS 18 looks like.

Way more often than I need to, although right now I’m enjoying my Air 5, having had base models, airs and both size pros in the past. The only way I’ll likely change this year is if they shift the camera location like they did on the base models.

I’m on the M1 11” as well and if the OLED looks significantly better, I might upgrade during the back to school sale so I can see what iPadOS 18 will bring first. M1 is still going strong and the battery is holding up well enough for now though.

Am going to pre-order the Air 12.9, replacing my 3rd gen IPP w/a diagonally cracked screen. I broke the screen the day after purchase; but continued to use it. I was honest when I called to Apple and for my honesty was quoted a screen repair price of $895? Cdn.

I may or may not get the screen on the IPP if I pass it on to my sister

Still using my mini 6 + Apple Pencil daily and have no intentions of upgrading this year, even if it gets a spec bump. Perfectly content with this model.

Yes, this is the year for me, after I've wrung pretty much all the use possible out of my 9.7 Pro (2016). I continue to use Lightroom and Photoshop with it even though sometimes it now crashes or takes 30-45 seconds to register even something simple like a brush stroke. I'm very patient with the speed of older devices but when it's time, it's time.

Years ago I set out a little informal wishlist for a new Pro: OLED screen and a Face ID array on the landscape side, since that's the orientation I use my iPad in 95% of the time. Release after release they kept not adding these things, so I held off. This year, finally, it looks like we're getting both in one shot. Along the way they added other neat things like the magnetic pencil charging to replace the design crime that is the first-generation plug-in pencil charging. So, it's an exciting time. As long as it launches at a base price of less than $1200, I'll be preordering an 11-inch Pro, pencil, keyboard.. the whole works.

If you are waiting on Apple to add multi-user log on to the iPad… then I suggest stop waiting and look elsewhere (no need for curiosity going forward).

I may be wrong, but it’s in Apple best interest for the household to buy multiple iPads… wouldn’t be beneficial for Apple to allow multi-user log on.

Whenever the one I have either doesn’t do what I need it to do because the iOS version is too old (I don’t update iOS), or the newer one entices me enough.

I upgraded my 9.7-inch iPad Pro to the Air 5 because Apple forcibly updated it into iOS 12 and it doesn’t work as well as I’d like it to, but apart from that, that’s my criteria. I’ve kept (and use) the 9.7-inch iPad Pro because it works decently well, unlike fully updated ones.

A very important point is that I don’t care if my device is old if it works properly. I have the iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12, and it’s flawless, so I don’t mind if it isn’t the latest, as long as it runs the original version of iOS.

I would’ve probably thrown it into a river if it were on iOS 17.

I was going to upgrade my 11” M1 to an OLED 11”, but I’m getting the Vision Pro and think that my primary iPad use case (lightweight media consumption and travel) will likely be completely usurped by the AVP. Can’t really see myself using my iPad enough after that to justify the upgrade cost…

The smart keyboard on my 2nd Gen iPP 12.9 gave up the ghost and the iPP itself has touch screen sensitivity issues off and on so at this point I'm inclined to trade it in for the rumored 12" Air. I'm kinda done chasing iPPs at this point since I have other devices in my inventory that can satisfy my needs for various tasks.

Every 3-4 years depending on model and use case. I upgraded from a 2020 Pro to the M2 last month because I don't want to have to buy a new Magic Keyboard or pay the OLED tax for a while - and performance wise the upgrade was very worth it. That, and I wanted more storage.

The iPad mini is a bit of a stranger case, of course, since Apple goes back and forth on how close to leading-edge it is. If they update it this fall with an A18 and 6GB of RAM (or more) I'll probably go ahead and grab it in early 2025 (though that'd still be 3 years with the Mini 6).

I trade or resell the old models, though, so that does defray the cost of upgrading somewhat.

I plan on upgrading to the new iPad Pro 11 + cellular. I gave serious thought to going to the 12.9/13 but I think I am going to stick with the 11. I've had the 2018 iPad Pro 11 + cellular since it was released, and use it almost daily for personal and work. Main reason I'm upgrading is due to running out of storage and would like to have 5G speeds when on cellular.

Using the Mini 6 since it came out on a daily basis without any issues, so can’t see a reason to upgrade any time soon.
That been said, there are two scenarios i’ll consider upgrading to newer Mini - if i’ll need more storage space down the road and if/when they’ll add more RAM.

Agree--there's way more to consider than just the iPad when upgrading. By the time you get to your next one all the form factors and options have changed and you really have to think about how you're going to use the device and how much you want to spend on extras to make that happen.
