What do you guys do for iCloud storage? Started a thread here ( if I’m allowed to link here?)

iCloud Storage Question;
I don’t really bother with iCloud, except to sync a few apps like Notes, Safari tabs, Pages. My backups are done to iTunes (also therefore to Time Machine for versioned backups), and I have a “personal cloud” drive that I’m going to sync my Photos library to, but I haven’t set it up yet. So the free 5 GB is enough for me. But if I had my way (robust local sync options in the OS/Files app), I wouldn’t use even that.

I am kinda in the same boat. I had my 11 month old Gen 2 12.9 replaced about 2 weeks ago that also had touch issues and unresponsive screen. so hopefully between now and when the Gen 5 is released March hopefully. This Gen 2 will be up forsale
Never heard of touch issues on the iPad Pro.

Any link?

I have the disorder where I see a new iPad ... realize it isn't enough justification for me to upgrade... see family without an iPad, offer them my iPad for 50% or less (with tons of accessories), then justify buying a new iPad.

I've gone through so many iPads this way... Apple loves me.
Ha me and iPhone. Mini 2021 lol my 2020 mini will go to my mom.

Plenty having this issue with the Gen 2 myself included

I’ve got the 2018 model, I had the 2017 one... and I was dead set on keeping that one too. I wanted to avoid looking at that new design, because I knew it would tempt me to buying one. I waited only about a month or so and I caved.

The iPads are so well designed, they can last a long time. The screen is awesome on my 2018 model, if the 2021 screen models are substantially better.. then yeah, I’ll upgrade. But I recently purchased a  Pencil and I gotta feeling.. the newer models will have a different  Pencil to go with it.
I really liked the new design of the 2018 iPad Pro, but I ended up having issues with my 2017 12.9” Pro. (touch issues then it just died altogether) Apple wanted to charge me £500 for a fix, I was a little annoyed and so after a polite but strongly worded email was sent to Phil Schiller, I was contacted by Apple executive relations here in the UK, to cut a long story short i was sent a new 2017 iPad Pro. At that point I didn’t see a reason to upgrade to the 2018 version. Fast forward to last year and the update just didn’t seem enough for me. Hopefully this year will be a bigger update with Mini LED and I’ll upgrade.

oh and my 2017 iPad Pro is still working along with the 1st gen Apple Pencil, both of which I’ll probably pass down to either my mum or dad, when I upgrade :)

Good to hear you got a replacement. That’s the good thing about our consumers laws here where there is a reasonable amount of time an electronic product is expected to last. An iPad Pro is expensive and a screen shouldn’t fail after such a short amount of time. I remember getting a TV replaced when a power supply failed after four and a half years.

We have 2 2015 ipp 12.9 that need new batteries (on original batteries). They both get 2-6 hours of daily use. $60 each on ifixit. If one gets broken while fixing we might replace it with a new one. We passed on the air 2 and upgraded to a 2020 ipp 11 that is well loved. That ipp is used in conjunction with a 2015 mbp, which probably needs a new battery but did get a new ssd upgrade a couple weeks ago. My 2017 iphone se got a new $25 battery and is now better than ever. It likely needs a new battery every 1-2 years. The other 2017 se got a new battery but we accidentally broke the home key so hubby, the technology curmudgeon, is now rocking a 2020 SE and he loves it (but won’t admit it).

I’m still on the original 2015 iPad Pro 12.9”.

I keep wanting to upgrade, but to be fair, this thing still does everything I want it to do, combined with the excellent Logitech keyboard that connects to the Apple Side Connector. (Not Bluetooth).

On the new ones, I’d love the USB-C port. I couldn’t care less about Face-ID. I’ve heard the new screen is great and it’s insanely faster, but I’m not sure that’s worth dropping $1200+ on just yet. I’m beyond impressed that I have a 6 year old tablet that still performs this well. When I’m finished with it, I’m sure it will be serviceable for someone else at a later point.

I’m honestly not sure what will trigger my next upgrade.

Slow is a relative word and depends on what you do with it. After being spoiled by A12X yes, A9X feels a bit sluggish, especially if you use things like youtube (or gmail) on safari (not the apps), or if you do split screen. But if you have never being spoiled by faster devices, it's not bad.
Some people consider fine even something like the Air 2, which is a much slower device, so everything is relative....

Well FB on Safari is so slow that if you click on something you run the risk of having more stuff on the page load (because it takes mord than 10 seconds) and thus the click registers on the wrong item. I ended up using Opera. Does Apple News App take you a whole 60 seconds to load the front page? Because that’s verging on unusable. We had to wipe our machines and use only stock apps. Typing on the screen keyboard can’t even keep up.

I said relative precisely because what mainly runs slow on the A9X or even A10 is websites that have a dedicated app (facebook, youtube, gmail etc.). These websites, once you run them on Safari to avoid ads or for other reasons, will run much worse, unless you have a more powerful device (A10X or better A9 or newer). Many people only run the apps, so will never notice this. And not everyone runs Apple News (not even available in non English speaking countries I think)

There's few things I like more than shiny new gadgets but my 2018 IPP still fits my needs perfectly. I love it.

Every few years

Had a 2017 12.9 iPad Pro until I got the 2021 m1 11”

Had a 9.7 pro until traded it for a mini 5 I got at launch in early 2019. Still rocking it.

I upgrade when my current one is no longer cutting it. I have a 2017 10.5 iPad Pro and resisted upgrading for 4 years as it sufficed. I got my money's worth. The battery doesn't hold a charge of more than 5 hours under heavy use. Still perfectly useable if I reset it and give it to my kids. Must be all the apps/notifications I run. Plus,y keyboard is shot.It is a common problem.

I was looking for an ultra, ultra, ultra portable to replace my 12" Macbook and the 13" Air didnt make sense as I will be getting a 16" M1 Max. And I considered my use case, I use my iPad for 80% of my computing needs. The new 2021 M1 11" Pro w/ Thunderbolt was well worth it. I'd say, I can get things done in a pinch versus lugging another laptop. I use the 12" macbook to write code,SSH into AWS and do some minor DevOps stuff for my personal SaaS I run. I dont do that on my work issued macbook 16 I lug around.

I wont upgrade to an M2 iPad Pro. Next time I upgrade if it has mini-LED, spanning monitor display, or my current one's battery life degrades.

I upgraded to the Mini 6, so the 2.5 year gap brings my average to 4.5 years.

I can't see myself upgrading to the 7, so perhaps it will stay around there. With a usable device already, the bar is higher (form factor change justifying the 5 to 6.) If they were to revert to Gold, Silver, Grey I would also pass. Bound to be a more colourful selection sometime.

Whenever it is worth it. My iPads age very well and are in a very good condition after 5-6 years of a moderate use. Once I upgrade, I usually pass on my retired iPads to the family, so my iPad Air 1 and iPad Air 2 are still used today and enjoyed. ? Currently on iPad Air 4.

I have a 2016 9.7 Ipad Pro- it's the oldest part of my Apple Gear, Iphone 12 Pro, Apple Watch 7, M1 Macbook and I use it a lot. Do you see a performance increase in mundane tasks, like Apple News loading?
Thanks.

It’s tough for me, I really don’t have a time schedule. Usually if there is a feature that catches my eye, I will upgrade to a new iPad Pro. I went from the 10.5 to the 11 second generation as I wanted to full screen and my partner’s iPad Air was soon to not be supported by Apple.

I upgrade as and when I need I have 3 mini’s I got the first one a mini 1
When they first came out
Got the mini 4 some time later and just got the mini 6 in October
The wife and son uses the mini 1 and 4 to play card games
The mini 1 is slow to boot up
The mini 1 is 16gb the mini 4 is 128gb
And the mini 6 is 64gb the mini 1 and 6
Are both cellular I will not replace any until they stop working
Neil

Bought my first iPad in 2017: iPad Pro 10.5, 256GB
Sold it and bought my second one in 2020: iPad Pro 12.9 Cellular, 256GB

Planning to use my current one again at least for 3 years until 2023. Depending on how good the upgrade I can get in 2023 is, I may even use it longer.
