Apparently, almost every year due to hardware issues. I'd love to get another iPad Pro, because the 2nd gen Pencil is so freaking cool, but will probably get an Air when it goes on sale. Goodness willing the touch irresponsiveness issues will be fixed soon. That's my biggest hurdle right now.

Yeah for sure if there was a specific need that the storage wasn’t meeting, or making it very cumbersome to manage, then I would have upgraded just for storage too. But in my case, there were always manageable workarounds.

I was just surprised about that price because I didn’t remember it ever being that high for the second gen, even at full price with tax and everything (unless you add the pencil and/or smart keyboard). Anyway, it can definitely be worth paying that much if the device fills a big need/want. I happily paid full price for my first gen 12.9. It was my first iPad. I had no interest in iPads before then because they were not good digital sketchbooks—too small and no good stylus. When the 12.9 and Apple Pencil was announced, I almost soiled myself. I didn’t get one at launch though, I think maybe because I couldn’t afford it, can’t remember. I didn’t get one until they upped the storage to 256gb, which was a nice bonus. I was planning to hold onto it until it became unusable or until there was a new must-have feature. But when I saw Apple did away with the big bezels and Touch ID (features I prefer), I decided to get the second gen just for extra longevity. As it wasn’t really a functional upgrade, I was totally fine waiting for a sale.

After my first gen 12.9 I also got an iPad mini for casual consumption. I like owning two iPads as well. Both are uniquely good at their tasks and integral.
$799 base + $300 (upgrade to 512GB) = $1099
$1099 + $130 (upgrade to LTE) = $1229 (before tax)

The 1st gen 256GB LTE was also $1229 MSRP and only discount I saw was $100 off with a 2-year contract (which is available all the time anyway). Wifi models went on sale but not the LTE versions.

Right now, I'm using 450GB out of 512GB on my current 12.9, around 150GB of which is video that I could delete in case I need more space for my comics. Of course, this only works because I have a 256GB 9.7 dedicated to manga and the 512GB 12.9 is solely for American comics. If I combined storage requirements, I'd need the 1TB model but like I mentioned, I like having different sizes for different uses. If the 11" got upgraded to 326 ppi so it's essentially two iPad minis side by side (retain tablet ui in 1/2 split view landscape), I might consider consolidating.

I don’t have a pattern yet. I got my first iPad in mid 2014 (1st gen Air). My second iPad was in early 2018 (Mini 4). I then picked up the latest Mini this year the week it was released. As it turns out, I went from 1 GB of RAM to 2 and then 3, but that wasn’t what my entire decision was based on. Each one had improvements over the previous model. The Air loses software support this year, the Mini 4 will likely lose support next year and the Mini 5 will probably have many years of support, so I could really hold onto it for a while before upgrading again. But if they come out with a Mini Pro, I won’t be able to resist. I’d love a Mini Pro.

I was every new model until the original 12.9” iPad Pro in Nov. 2015. Kept that until two months ago and upgraded to the 11” iPad Pro.

When they were making really high quality devices I was upgrading every year (starting in 2009). Since around 2013-2015 Apple's hardware reliability went down to 20-40%. Every device (a couple of iPhones, iPads Pro) I bought from them since then had hardware problems (from really light to really severe).

So I just stopped upgrading in 2017. Too much money for the device that reliably works 1-1.5 years. And when out of warranty there's a fair chance it stops functioning.

I have owned the following from 2011 until now:
iPad 2
iPad 3 (with retina!)
iPad Air (original model with the thumpy screen)
Went iPad-less for a while and just had a 13" MBP (hated not having an iPad)
iPad mini 3
iPad Pro 9.7"
iPad Pro 10.5"
iPad Pro 11"

I initially had tried using my iPad Air as a laptop but the third party keyboard case options back then were awful, and iOS and third party iPad apps were just not suited for it quite yet either. It was my ideal form factor for hardware though.

So the iPad Pro has been the dream machine for me even without having iPadOS on it yet. I've owned every generation because the form factor changes have been just too much for me to resist. However, I don't plan on another upgrade in the coming refresh (whenever that may be) if there is not a significant design change.

Me:
ipad air 16GB (sold)
ipad mini 2 16GB (now devoted to legacy 32bits apps and games)
ipad air 2 16GB LTE (sold)
ipad pro 2015 128GB
ipad mini 4 64GB
ipad pro 9.7 128 GB LTE
ipad mini 5 64GB LTE

Can we speak of upgrading if you keep the older ones? I only sold the 2 Airs, still have all the others...I like to have the 3 sizes (12.9, mid size, midi).
Will I upgrade my 12.9? not before another 5+ years. I only use it at home and for that it needs nothing more
My mini 5? It will probably last me at least until 2025.
My 9.7 pro? We'll this is the next upgrade, but I'll keep it as long as I can as I love it. It will get IpadOS 14 at the very least, and even if it stops there, it will be good for another 2-3 year.
So I guess no upgrade until 2023, unless I find an 11in pro 256GB LTE for under $500 in the meantime...

I have been using a iPad for nearly 6 months now. My first iPad ever being the 11” iPad Pro 64GB. The power and speed got me hooked with casual video editing, and gaming. I upgraded to the 1TB 11” model about 4 months ago, just to have a little more ram and storage space to have the best experience possible in such a small and thin device.

I do not know how long I will keep it. I may upgrade to the next Pro models. But maybe not. I am not even worried about it really. I am still quite happy with this one.

Had original iPad, upgraded to iPad 3, first gen iPad Pro 12and11 inch, iPad with pencil support, iPad Pro 3.

I usually keep my iPad 2-3 years unless there’s some new feature I want.

With the crazy prices of the pros, I probably won’t upgrade as often.

My first iPad was the first generation iPad Air (64GB version) which I bought in 2014. I have just replaced it this week with the new iPad Air 2019, along with the Apple Smart Keyboard. So far I love this new device. And the keyboard too, as it makes the iPad much more useful to me. (Typing this on the keyboard right now). Next thing to buy will be the Apple Pencil for photo retouching on the iPad.

If this iPad holds up like my previous one it will probably be another 4 or 5 years before I buy a new one again...

iPad 2
iPad 3
iPad Air
iPad 12.9 gen 1

Will probably upgrade to 12.9 gen 4 if the structure is a little better than the gen 3
With having 4GB ram not in a hurry to upgrade

Curious how often people upgrade or plan to upgrade going forward

I’m one of those people who will upgrade every gen because I love having the latest and greatest cutting edge tech in my hands. I don’t have kids and my gf is a cheapskate so upgrading is never an issue. 2014 is the year I went iOS only so my iPads are always my main machine.

-iPad Air
-iPad Air 2
-iPad Pro 9.7
-iPad Pro 12.9 gen 1
-iPad Pro 10.5
-iPad Pro 12.9 gen 3

I’m with you here. I’m overdue on my upgrade schedule. I currently have the 9.7 IPP with the original pencil and the ASK. All are working well at this time with no touch disease. I would love a new iPad but will hold off until new iPad Pros come through without these major issues.

I’ve owned almost every iPad ever released, a couple of minis, the first two 12.9 pros, and now the 11” pro. There always seems to be some feature I love and can’t pass up, so I upgrade.

However, I have reached a point with my phone (XR) where I think I’ll actually pass on the next upgrade, and my 11” iPad Pro is really a wonderful device, so I am thinking I’ll stick with it a while as well.

What I would like is to add a mini 5 to make my lineup complete. ;-p

That’s great your 9.7 iPP is fine.

All the iPads I’ve bought and returned have had heat issues on the left side which led to touch disease (including this 2018 iPad now).

Thankfully, Apple are finally acknowledging and swapping out iPads that exhibit this heat issue, if you can prove the iPad is getting that hot on the left side.

That makes me hopeful they will correct the heat distribution in the next Pro (a better heat sink etc.) and other iPads. It’s hard to hold off, but I’ll keep doing so. I miss owning a Pro.

Seems to be every 4 years for me, got original in 2010, iPad Air 2 in 2014 then pro in 2018. Tend to hang on to stuff that costs a fair wedge.

I have this theory...remember how there was a bit of news last year about how Apple was going to sort of slow things down a tad and focus on performance and stability for their OS releases last year and hold off on some software features that had originally been planned for 2018? I get the impression that the current gen iPad Pro was intended to run what we’re now seeing as iPad OS. It was a common narrative in reviews that the 2018 iPad Pro had some seriously impressive hardware but that it was very much held back by the software.

You’re probably right that the current iPad Pro will run iPad OS without a hitch for years to come and that a refresh isn’t necessary this year— but I wouldn’t mind if they moved to an annual cycle and did a spec bump every other year ;)
Well they did skip the A11 cpu and went 17 months between iPad pros. We might not see a new iPad Pro until June 2020 with an A14, skipping the 2019 A13 cpu series.

I feel I shouldn’t be here as I think if the thing works keep it.
My introduction to the world of Apple was in 2014 with the iPad Air 16gb LTE.
I loved that machine, perhaps too much because I added more & more stuff and the storage began to run out so in 2018 upgraded to the 6th Gen 128gb LTE. With both of these I used a Belkin Qode Bluetooth keyboard (the same one as the dimensions of the pads is exactly the same).
I don’t plan to upgrade anytime soon, it very much depends on what Apple will introduce to the range and whether I feel that my life would be better with it.

Photo editing has become my favorite thing to do with my iPad Pro. Affinity Photo with the Apple Pencil is an absolute dream to work with.

First question: while I know Apple has skipped an A-series chip in the iPad lineup before, have they ever introduced a *new* A-series in the iPad first? My recollection is that the iPhone always introduces the latest A-series chip. Not that they couldn't change things up, but it seems less likely. Note that the A10x-based iPad was released in June 2017-- just a few months before the A11 was introduced in the iPhone X.

Given this, unless they go a 2 full years between releases, the iPad Pro is likely to end up with the A13x-- only a question of when.

(EDIT: Technically it seems Apple announced the iPad Pro in 2015 *before* the iPhone 6s, in the same September event. And it was available after the iPhone 6s... I guess what I'm thinking is that I don't see the A series cadence moving up for a spring/summer 2020 A14 launch, but who knows.)

I do suspect the iPad is getting some additional focus / effort as a segment of their business that has growth potential, which is the primary reason they might move to a yearly release cadence. Doesn't mean they need to -- the OS update might be enough to carry it into next spring. I'm just wish-casting because I want to see a spec bump this fall when I plan on buying :p

I’ve only bought two: the original in 2010 (32GB) and iPad Air in 2013 (64GB). The iPad is pretty full now and repeatedly tells me so when I’m right in the middle of doing something. I should have got the 128GB. I’d like a new one now but I’m rather penurious these days.

iPad 2 got the A5 roughly half a year before the iPhone 4S and OG iPad got A4 like a quarter prior to the iPhone 4. None of the AnX chips were released before the An chips, though.

iPad 2
iPad 3
iPad Air (original)
iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd gen)

I have to say it was a huge upgrade from the original air to the iPad Pro!!
