$500 from MSRP, right? I guess I'm used to taking a bath on always buying the highest capacity available in any given iOS device.
Yep. Alas, the gap ($-wise) between base and top is much wider now which makes the depreciation hit worse (if you paid full MSRP).

Before (WiFi/LTE):
16GB: $499/629
64GB: $699/829

Now (WiFi/LTE):
64GB: $799/949
1TB: $1549/1699

Yeah... good point. It used to be a set price difference for each tier (ie 100 bucks). Pretty much double the premium increase to move from 512 to 1tb. Of course 1tb also comes with 2gb more RAM, right? (for a total of 6gb, which is one reason, it seems, many people go for the 1TB model).

I don't have a burning need. It's more that I want one right now, but I'm guessing whether we'll see a spec bump in October. Most logic would say no, but iPadOS is a new variable that makes me wonder if we'll see more regular hardware updates.

The first iPad was released Spring 2010 so I think Apple will probably hold off on releases for now and just wait for the iPad's 10th anniversary.

Just hard to see how much they can improve it for the next gen...likely why we don’t see it upgraded every 12 months.

I forgot to post this, but I’m a spreadsheet nerd and have a “Wishlist” file where I rate the various upgrade attributes and only when they pass a certain threshold do I upgrade my device. I try to use it to cut back on impulse purchases.

I got the iPad mini 2 and just upgraded this year to mini 5 so about 5 years.

I will upgrade to another mini if it provides a significant upgrade over the mini 5

Well, they do it with the iPhone. And with laptops frequently the primary hardware update we see between redesigns is just a performance increase with newer processors and such.

Not that we have any rumors to suggest we’ll see a bump this fall, to the contrary, they also seem to point to an early 2020 update. Me coming up with reasons why they could update more frequently is mostly wishful thinking on my part

That’s not a bad point. (and now we have this somewhat questionable rumor of a folding display iPad for 2020... 10th anniversary ipad?)

Also, the last couple years have seen various iPad updates early in the year— weather it’s the basic iPad or, this year, the 10.5” Air and the updated Mini.

I do still think that, as they give the iPad line the legs to do more real, serious work via software updates (iPad OS), the more attractive it would be to keep them up to date on A series processor chips and not wait an extra 6 months or skip chip generations. Bit perhaps the iPad hasn’t proven worth that effort yet. Like I said. Wishful thinking on my part :p

I upgrade my tech when I get bored of the things I have, sometimes that is before they release the new version and I then change stuff up. Right now I am using a iPad Pro 11” as my mobile device, before that I had the iPad Pro 10.5” for 4 months and before that I had a Macbook Pro 13” for 7-8 months. So it all depends on how long I think the setup I have is fun to use.

Late 2012: iPad 4, A6X, WiFi, 64 GB
Late 2014: iPad Air 2, A8X, WiFi, 64 GB
Late 2018: iPad Pro 11, A12X, LTE, 256 GB
Probably 2022 the next one
iPad Air 2 was around 550€ at the launch and I sold it for 250€, so only 300€ for 4 years

original, 2, 3, mini 2, air 2, 10.5 pro, currently mini 5. each time i upgrade i would sell my ipad to my younger brother with a family discount and then his ipad would go down to our mom. the only exception was the mini 2, which my partner kept.

the next time i plan on upgrading is probably if a new mini comes out with enough of an upgrade. it's definitely my favorite form factor. it's my main personal computing device.
Don't You find it to small for productivity?

Usually hold onto my iPads for 2.5-ish years. I've only had my iPad Pro 2017 for 1 year and 4 months and even on iOS 13 beta, it is speedy.

The iPad Pro era has been super interesting, because if you're like me and have bought the smaller model every generation, you've gotten a different form factor three years in a row. 9.7" Pro with old iPad Air/2 design, 10.5" iPad Pro with old iPad Air/2 design but slightly tweaked for more screen real estate, and then 11" iPad Pro with first completely new chassis design in about 6 years and an even bigger screen.

I'm a complete sucker for a redesign when it comes to iPads for some reason. My wallet would really love it if September is just a spec bump for the iPad Pro so I could feel content keeping my 2018 model for at least another generation.

I am a sucker so I upgrade every time a new pro comes out..... the 11 was a new design so unless this year is something big I think I might skip it.

I can't see any changes to the Pro 11 this year apart from a spec bump. I'll be keeping this one for another year I suspect although I am longing for an upgrade which brings 6 or 8GB RAM across the board for all iPad Pros so that apps will be designed to make use of it.

I've decided I will upgrade my 11" Pro once either a) there's a new drastic redesign or b) Affinity Designer won't run on it anymore. I don't see either of those things happening for at least another year or two.

I used to do it every other year, but stopped at the iPad Pro 10.5.

Using AT&T Next and paying $45/month broke me of the addiction.

I have one, and only one, regret about moving up from the 10.5" Pro to the 11" Pro: I LOVED LOVED LOVED the Zagg Rugged Messenger case for the 10.5". Best iPad case I've ever had for any iPad bar none. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the third party case options for the 2018 iPad Pros are all worse than they've ever been. Zagg went way down in build quality and design, and I still don't understand why everyone thinks the Logitech options are so great--I find them to be terrible. I know there are more than those two, but the options get worse as you go down the list. I do really like the Smart Keyboard Folio, but I just really wish it had side protection.

iPad Mini (2013-2015)
iPad Air (2015-2016)
iPad Air 2 (2016-

I think I’m averaging 2-3 years.

The Air 2 is still awesome after three years of use! Although I wouldn’t mind an 11” iPad Pro to replace it sometime soon.

My son still loves his Air 2 and uses it for everything.

I only own and upgrade the regular iPads. I find the Pro versions overpriced and not worth the perceived display improvement or benefit. The laminated display is not a big deal to me.

The regular iPad processors are always plenty fast for me and don't become outdated over many releases of IOS. I'm just waiting and hoping for the 7th generation to come out this fall, when the military exchange usually has them on sale at a very good discount.

iPad 1st gen, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, Mini 4, iPad Pro 9.7, iPad Pro 11.

sold them every year like my iPhones to upgrade to the next. After the pro 9.7 I didn’t feel the need to upgrade right away, so I gave the Air 2 to my mother, and gave the child the pro.

You know what’s important to you and what’s not. I respect that.
