Every year on Day 1 for me. Flipping the previous generation phone brings the cost down to about 50-60% of the cost. For something I use multiple times a day, nay, each hour... it is well worth the ~$2/day.

I usually upgrade every 2 years. This is the first time that I have done it two years in a row. Last year I went from the 6s to the 8 plus. I wanted the X last year, but decided to wait and see if they came out with a bigger version this year, which they did obviously. So, I preordered the Xs Max last night. I'll be keeping this one for two years.

Every 2 years. Until this year. My 7 plus is fine and I don’t need to pay $1100 plus for a bigger screen.

Thank you. Guys like you made my iPhone Xs Max pre-order and Sep. 21 deliver an ease and possible.

Every year until this year. Trying to get off the hamster wheel of always paying Apple every month, and it just so happens this lackluster release may make this the year!

I have upgraded every year since the original iPhone in 2007.

However, this year the iPhone Xs is just not compelling enough for me to upgrade since I already have an iPhone X and there is not much difference between the iPhone X and iPhone Xs. Also, I do not want the iPhone Xs Max, nor do I want to "downgrade" to the iPhone XR with its LCD screen. Yes, I know Apple makes the best LCD screens out there, but for me, once you go OLED, you do not go back!

I must say, I truly missed all the pre-order madness this year! Oh well, next year I think we will see a beautiful new iPhone XI with TONS more features than these mediocre Xs/Xs Max changes. As myself and many others have said, this is the worst "S cycle" upgrade ever.

Every year since the 3G, won’t be upgrading this year. Phones this year are lackluster and too expensive to justify upgrading. With the glass back on the max it is going to be heavy especially with a case, it doesn’t have split screen or any different features than my X to take advantage of the bigger screen.

Usually every 2 years & I’ve ended up being an ‘S’ model guy until I got the 7.

I can see myself keeping this until...

- It breaks/I drop it/I lose it
- 5g comes to the iPhone
- The upgrades get so amazing compared to what the 7 has that I cave in
- and the price is around £500-600 (which means I’ll probably end up getting an older model)

I’ve got a feeling that September 2019 will be the time that I press the upgrade button, however...

Given that I like smaller phones (and prices!) I’m starting to think that Apple are not making phones for me anymore.

Time to get that refurb SE and put it in a drawer, I guess!

Every 5 Years. I dont need an upgrade when the old device still works fine.

Upgrading now from a 5S to XS Max.

Really interesting reading your perspective.

Maybe we are heading into a time when those who used to upgrade every year, religiously, will move to a every other year cycle.

For me, I thought the X was interesting but that it was mostly about the new UI paradigm.

However, I was really interested in those year’s S models as it seemed that Apple had put ‘power’ on top of the new UI foundation and is really letting the X sing in its XS form.

Then again, I’ve always been an ‘S’ guy (my 7 is arguably the 6SS!).

Makes you wonder what’s coming next year for the XI:

Haptic side buttons for increased reliability and dust & liquid resistance?

5G (surely this will be a 2020 thing)?

5k display and recording on the Max?

My 7 is my first iPhone, I've held onto it for nearly 2 years now.
Undecided on the XS, only getting if I get a discount.

So 2-3 years I guess, which if I do get an XS I will be keeping for that amount of time.

Whenever my employer lets me. Haven’t owned my phone for about six years. It does mean I’m sometime on subpar hardware though (I struggled with a 16 GB iPhone 4S for a while..).

Generally every 1.5 years. I’ve owned the 3GS, 4S, 5C, 6+, 6S, 8+, going to Max. I plan to hold on to this Max until at least early 2020.

I’ve been on a 3-year upgrade cycle since the 3GS

3GS —> 5 —> 6S —> XS

The 3GS and 5 seemed long in the tooth after three years. After a recent battery replacement my 6S doesn’t feel like an upgraded is as important as it was on prior models I’ve had.

I’m anticipating getting 5 years (and several battery replacements) out of the XS.

I do every year. I am on upgrade program. My sister says I’m stupid for being on the program and upgrading, but to each their own.

Every year... it’s hella fun ordering and the rush of getting the phone once 3:01am hits. I always... ALWAYS get the release day iPhones :).

Well most y’all know that almost didn’t happen last year and I worked my magic and got a release day iPhone X. Lmao
