Extremely popular in Ontario Canada. I believe I only sent out a total of 38 text messages (SMS) in the last month, everything else iMessage or FB Messenger.

With the rather high amount of Android devices in Canada (easily >50%), iMessage will be used way less often than others.

iMessage is not popular at all in my country. In fact, SMS in general is not popular anymore as it has been abused by the carriers to spam their own users. The advent of whatsapp, Line, Telegram, etc, have replaced SMS, thus even iPhone users here would use whatsapp. Add on the fact that Android is the majority.

I wish Apple put a feature to automatically filter spams, just like Google Messages app on Android.

Switzerland here. Unfortunately, lots of people use WhatsApp here. In our family we mostly use iMessage and Threema (Secure Swiss alternative to Signal & Co), having deleted WhatsApp about half a year ago.

In Australia, all my friends/family/co-workers have iPhones and use iMsg.
For my friends/family in the UK, most have iPhones but everybody uses Whatsapp.

What I noticed is that many Australians are still using regular SMS, thus iMessage usage is natural since it's the same app on iPhone. Even Android users there use regular SMS instead of the various instant messaging platforms. It's quite interesting.

Here in Switzerland almost everybody has unlimited texts but people are heavy on WhatsApp. I have stopped to start the discussion about priv and meta data with friends, school teachers and the like. Solution was to simply delete WhatsApp and be done with it.

Even my one Android mate uses SMS. All our mobile plans have unlimited SMS, so that's why.

In most countries there is unlimited SMS but that doesn’t stop messaging apps like WhatsApp still being popular. It’s more down to interface preferences and the fact it’s cheaper to share media via WhatsApp cross platform I think.

It also comes to historical factors and who you’re contacting. Given in oz there are unlimited text plans (and have been for a while) there’s little point in switching to an alternative platform (ie WhatsApp) if all of your contacts are based in the same country. One of the strengths of WhatsApp/Facebook messenger/Signal (and other equivalent services) over a text is that it’s essentially free to send a message to anyone across the globe.

I was trying to explain it’s much the same in the UK in regards to unlimited plans have been common for 10+ years now but WhatsApp has still grown in popularity. The main reason for this is SMS messages don’t include sending pictures and videos to those on Android. It can cost £0.50 a message to send a single picture if I were to send to an Android from iMessage whereas WhatsApp is free. WhatsApp just seems to be the standard here now and is in much of the rest of Europe.

Also to add, WhatsApp and the like allow you to create group chats which are a huge benefit over standard SMS

For me its obviously popular in the United States, and its popular in El Salvador, Second in El Salvador is WhatsApp

Here in the States we use iMessage because it was the default messaging app when we bought our iPhones. And we Americans are too lazy to explore options that may be better.

Actually, iOS devices hold majority of the market share in Canada, according to this website. iOS devices (excluding iPads) hold up to almost 53% of the market share. While this may also account for iPods as well, I’m sure that isn’t too significant.

(Though, I’m not entirely sure about the credibility of said website, but seems credible enough)

I am English, but now live in America. iMessage is the go to here. However, when communicating with friends and family in the UK, it is a mixed bag. It appears that the carrier EE, seems to charge for international iMessage use. So, I was virtually forced to use WhatsApp for some America to UK conversations.

PS: Not happy about it at all...

why have a iPhone and not use iMessage!
I'm from Poland and no one uses iMessage either. Even if they have iPhones they don't use it. I've asked my friends several times to use iMessage, but they're like: "No, I don't like it. lets keep using WhatsApp". I guess it's because iMessage is "foreign" to them, if you know what I mean, right?
Not sure how it happened.

This site says Messenger is the most popular.

How the hell can they charge for iMessage? It relies on cell data or Wi-Fi. That’s so strange.

Netherlands, pretty much nobody uses iMessage here. It's mostly Whatsapp.
Netherlands here also. I use iMessage for direct conversations with friends (who almost all have iPhones and MacBooks) and for groups mostly WhatsApp is used.

iMessage barely makes an impact here in South Africa, us iOS users are a small minority of the overall mobile landscape down here, WhatsApp is by far the most popular:
