It scratches, protect it best you can. I applied a glass screen protector on my friends X yesterday and I almost screamed at the amount of tiny hair scratches on that screen when light reflected on it. All these so called 'toughest' and gorilla glass terms lol.... Glass is glass

You’re an idiot, touch screen anything is always going to scratch, or it will be so brittle, simply placing the phone in a pocket will cause the screen to shatter. Options are either to protect it for $50, microscratch the **** out of it until the glass turns white and the phone looks like ****, or replace the phone every three to four months.

This is absurd and untrue. Never heard of this ever happening, unless pressure was applied to the iPhone where it caused the display to shatter.

I've had the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 6 and now the iPhone 8. None of them have ever had a single scratch, cut, micro-anything. In the screen that is. My 6 got a little scratchy in the aluminium.

Have had my X since November. Do not baby it. Wipe screen off on shirts all the time. Dropped numerous times onto concrete. No scratches.

Mine was very durable for about a month with normal use with 0 scratches. Then i took it to the beach for about 10 days... I placed it on a duffel bag with towels and other beach stuff (found sand on the screen a few times). Now it has about 5 scratches with a major one about 2 cm long. You cant see them unless under direct bright light and you cant feel them when you run your finger through. I assume its the oleo-phobic coating.

From my experience, its slightly worse than the 6 but better than 4/4S

I don’t know what you do to your phones, but that’s just craziness. I have never used a screen protector and the worst I have after a year of use is a few light micro scratches that can only be seen under certain light. It doesn’t bother me, as I prefer to enjoy my phone. Screen protectors do bother me.

Then your skin is abnormally soft, and you work in an environment free of dust, sand, and dirt. Or you’re in denial that about the current condition of your phone. Because I’ve yet to own a phone that survived ten minutes of being scratch free. And if I put my phone in my pocket without protection, you would swear I took a belt sander to it.

Had my X since November
Stays in my left pants pocket with nothing else
But would hardly consider it babied at all
No case, no screen protector, no scratches whatsoever

Then again, I haven't looked at it with a flashlight and a magnifying glass

Why should that forum member share the same experiences as you? Why would they be in denial? Perhaps they treat their phones differently or don’t have the same experience that you do. I can attest that my iPhone has no scratches whatsoever on the display, does that mean I’m in denial as well? You said if you put your phone in a pocket without protection, it looks like someone took a belt sander to it, Which could seemingly mean that you either have debris in your pocket or you carry your phone in your pocket with other items causing the scratching. Sounds to me like you’re somewhat negligent with your phones based on how you treat them or you’re unaware of environment in your pocket which is causing the scratching.

im thinking of going screen protector less with my iPhone. The screen protectors always look like **** in the x.

Any one know?

The glass isnt as strong as their older phones if you ask me i know my fren scratched one of her phone in like a week with it in pocket and this is an iPhone 8 plus... Put on a screen protector its best to scratch that than the actual screen as the actual screen can run up to 400aud here without applecare+ which is a fk load. A 30-50$ screen protector is your best betPretty sure my crummy old iPhone 5s still has no scratches on the screen after 4 years. And i ran it naked with a back one piece case...

some people like to force it on others... again everyone is different , its not guaranteed the screen will stay ultra pristine after 2 years in a pocket per se. Which i am aware of and i pay about 30-50$ for a nice protector. Vs scratching the screen for no applecare price of 400aud for replafement...

Personally i baby my products alot and do not buy apple care because im always careful with everything. But that is me, others are different. And i cannot control others. Others might work in industrial places and they need more protection than i do etc etc and the other way round for those who work in a lint free environment per se.

Therefor your comment is right, he is wrong for forcing his opinion and expecting others to adhere to it... when we all know everyone is different in how they use and place and handle their phones etc

Perhaps the glass quality has improved, while the quality of the oleophobic coating is worse. Most light surface scratching appears on the fingerprint resistance coating before it gets to the glass.

I agree the oleophobic coating could be part of the problem. Especially given it does take much to scratch the coating and its possible Apple changed something in their process.

LOL, what? I don't use screen protectors or cases, and I use my phone like I stole it every day. It's been dropped on pavement, placed upside down on tables, in jeans pockets with other items, you name it. If you take it outside at high noon on a sunny day, you'll see a few microscratches. In normal use, there are zero identifiable scratches on the screen.

I'd rather use the device as intended instead of wrapping it in garbage. AppleCare is there in case I break it or accumulate a massive scratch. 10 years of owning caseless, protectorless iPhones and it's been fine - I just don't keep my devices longer than one year as it is so easy to upgrade.

Thanks for advice. I kind of baby my phone anyway and since I have apple care if I buy one more screen protector I’ll have spent more than a screen replacement from Apple.

Do glass screen protectors actually stop the actual screen from cracking if it falls? Or that’s false?

Yes in my experience they do prevent the screen from cracking. Assuming you buy one of the tempered glass protectors. Hubby and I both have dropped our phones where the tempered glass protector cracked, and after removing it, the screen was flawless underneath. YMMV

I would never want to find out how scratch proof of any screen when you shell out $$$ for it. Slap on a tempered glass and a case to keep that device in mint condition for resell in the future. ;)

I Really think it depends how cautious and overly protective someone is of their display. Of all my iPhone displays, I never had issues with scratching or damage relatively easily. I think they’re durable enough without a screen protector, but being protectors are optional, they obviously serve their purpose for those who want the ultimate protection against any type of scratches for those are very particular about their iPhone display scratching.

screen is not scratchproof. Avoid a headache and out of pocket. cost and get a good screen protector

I've got mine for almost two months now, and I have a minor scratch on the (metal) edge, some coins / keys on my pocket I guess… The screen is totally fine. Best Phone I've ever :)

I have never had my iPhone scratch in any noticeable way until the X. And then it also cracked. I just had bad luck. So screen protector went on after they fixed my damaged screen.

Problem this round was the screen protector was defective at launch and cracked I had to remove it. So I was screen protector less. Never again.

And just to put it in perspective, you have unlimited screen protector repairs but only 2 actual device repairs.

I've never put a screen protector on an iPhone, and never will. I've had my iPhone X for about half a year now and it looks like the day I bought it. The only thing I put on my iPhone is an Apple leather or silicone case, pretty much to make it easier to hold rather than for protection. I don't think I've ever dropped a phone.

Same here, I like to use it naked but sometimes it's slippery, easier to hold the phone with leather or plastic case.

Never put the phone in my pockets with other hard objects like keys, coins, sun glasses... never had a problem. Specifically to your Q, I don't think they gave the X a new super-incredible 100x more scratch resist than old iphones.
