I'm about to reset my AE on Win 10 to run off my normal network - at the moment it's set to run on its own new network. When I reconfigure it, I'll have a look at the security settings - it might be possible to use a lower setting, which night answer the problem you've highlighted.

I found my old one in the basement and had to reset it since I changed my router about a year ago. I still have an older Mac Mini PowerPC running Airport Utility 5.6.1 and that version can run the setup for the original AE. I use mine only for AirPlay so I have it set up to join an existing network and there was no problem with that. It does have WPA2 security so no issues there but it is a slower device as it has the b/g spec. It seems to work fine for AirPlay but if you have other needs, you'll have to see such as extending a network etc. It might slow down your network if used that way as I recall.

yea if used in this way you would definitely want to hard wire and have the AE broadcast its own b/g network, not act as a repeater/extender.
