yes; this;
that's the approach I chose; the thing works flawlessly; it's quiet; I had it for less than 400$ two years ago; and I've yet to run into a situation where I max out the CPU. I use mostly ableton live which is not super cpu hungry; and I'm fine with 8GB of RAM for now; 16 possible if needed (I don't use massive sound banks; mostly synths). Still have a motu firewire that I can plug directly into. Only real limitation is the outdated grapics (even for 2d support it falls a bit short; and is limited to 2k)
I've been meaning to upgrade my laptop (2011 15") but with the lockdowns I don't see the point for now; although it has that overheating/throttling problem all these old machines have (and repasting/disassembling is kind of a chore). Had my eyes on a 2015 15" to replace it. I'll probably buy an apple silicon mac in 2030.
